Impossibility of Nothingness
In an extraordinary late flowering, these new poems — written in his nineties — are still characteristically and unmistakeably the crafted work of Ian McDonald, and they are also remarkably other.McDonald’s hallmark qualities are all still here: a capacity for genuine compassion; an exploration of the complex nature of love; a profound engagement with the natural world; and character vignettes, powerfully drawn, empathetic but never sentimental, that are an essential archive of a disappearing Guyana. These late poems bring new angles on McDonald’s perennial themes. There is the exploration of memory and intimations of mortality, a focus on grandchildren, the garden and the sheer wonder of being alive at the poet’s great age. But in addition, there is something new-minted and unrestrained about the language of these later poems that is remarkable. These poems are, if anything, even more surprising, moving and inspirational than those pieces beloved by generations of Caribbean readers. There is a kind of carefree truthfulness about the poems in The Impossibility of Nothingness. Richly imagistic, the poems feel elemental, written without the constraint of wanting approval or applause but because they demanded to be written. As he says in the final line of the short title poem – which is an assertion of the possibility of momentary joy in even the bleakest of situations – “I record this just in case it’s true”.

The Green Parcel
The rural terrain of John Challis’s second collection provides a new lens for exploring history, class and work, our relationship to the natural world, and cycles of growth and decay. Much of his debut collection The Resurrectionists concerned working lives in the city: his father a London cabbie, his grandfather a market porter. Here his focus shifts to a crumbling stately home in Northumberland brought to life through the voices of the grounds as well as those who inhabit it and maintain it. London is at a distance. We find ourselves beyond, in backyards, on motorways, in fields, searching for the green patch in Kent, where an East End family picked hops in the summer. Despatches from the early years of fatherhood reflect on ageing, loss and patience. Poems set in the American west consider the idea of freedom. And on the eve of his execution, thief and folk hero Jack Sheppard flees into the forest of his mind. Confronting the tension between wanting to belong and the desire to escape, these poems acknowledge and reckon with the people and places that haunt us.
The Tumbling Paddy
Frank Ormsby’s eighth collection of poems is, on the whole, a playful book which constantly surprises us with serious themes. History is the word and history the image, whether as in a dream about Auschwitz or a portrait of the History Club on its annual outing. Then spirit of place is richly imagined, whether in the form of ‘Juggy’, the ‘simpleton’ sleepwalking through the estate, or the humanised tumbling paddy, both clumsy celebrant and instrument of refinement among the furrows. Elsewhere in the collection, Frank Ormsby demonstrates his skill with the resonant short poem. These pieces, mostly in haiku form, constitute a running tribute to the Japanese and Chinese poets he claims as his ‘oriental fathers’. Frank Ormsby is by turn movingly elegiac and wryly determined to allow death its dominion in the face of mortality and his experience of Parkinson’s disease. Frank Ormsby's retrospective, Goat's Milk: New & Selected Poems, was published by Bloodaxe in 2015, and followed by his later collections The Darkness of Snow (2017), The Rain Barrel (2019), and now, The Tumbling Paddy (2026).
Double Takes
Twinning is well embedded in Lawrence Sail’s family: himself the son of a twin, he also has a twin sister and – youngest of his four children – twin daughters. His book's title Double Takes reflects the poems’ central concern with many aspects of duality – whether manifested in the context of human relations, translations, ‘the moment saved from time’ or the touchstone of mortality. In some instances, juxtapositions and counterpoints bring affinities to light; in others, distance and difference. A number of the poems address the political and the public: the plight of refugees, a photo of Putin beside Gorbachev’s coffin, Brecht’s take on the ways of the world. Others confront the hard consequences of illness. Most of all, these are poems that pay proper attention to their subjects, and which amount to an appreciation of beauty and balance, however precarious, as in ‘Moving Out’, where it is only being ‘on the brink of removal’ that makes it possible to ‘engage with the ins and outs’, and to benefit from ‘the startle of those double takes / which reinterpret truth’. Lawrence Sail's retrospective, Waking Dreams: New & Selected Poems, a Poetry Book Society Special Commendation, was published by Bloodaxe in 2010, and followed by his later collections The Quick (2015), Guises (2020), and now, Double Takes (2026).

Po devítileté odmlce od vydání sbírky Volné verše, nominované na cenu Magnesia Litera, přichází Ondřej Hanus s novou, kompozičně sevřenou knihou, která jako by se zároveň vracela ke kořenům jeho poetiky. Podobně jako sbírka Výjevy, za kterou autor obdržel Cenu Jiřího Ortena, je Účaří symetricky rozděleno do dvou zrcadlově komponovaných částí a sleduje pohyb od výchozího bodu k lyrické pointě, od vzdoru k tichému smíření, od úzkosti k útěšnosti. Tematizuje přitom jak mezní zkušenosti těla a paměti, tak samotnou možnost poezie, jazyka a rytmu jako prostorů uchování i překročení. V koncentrovaném, obrazově naléhavém jazyce se zde setkává existenciální reflexe s potřebou a hledáním řádu – a právě z tohoto pnutí se rodí Hanusova dosud nejtišší a zároveň vnitřně nejvyhrocenější sbírka.
Autorem obálky a ilustrací je malíř a básník Matěj Lipavský. Souběžně se sbírkou vychází také stejnojmenné hudební album, na němž vybrané básně zhudebnil Jan Hoskovec alias Razumikhin (razumikhin.bandcamp.com).

A zase zkusíš ráno vstát
Bilanční kniha básní a písňových textů Jana Velíška (* 1951) obsahuje výběr 75 autorských textů, zpravidla zhudebněných českými písničkáři a kapelami. Autor v knize bilancuje svoji dosavadní plodnou textařskou dráhu při příležitosti svého významného životního jubilea. Kniha též obsahuje zajímavá věnování významných českých hudebníků, např. Raven

She begins Making the Wedding Dress with a quote from a handbook on sewing and asks what can be fixed, what does it mean to make a daughter’s wedding dress. The collection fans out to explore bullying, money, trade, rats and sinkholes. A third section questions how humans relate to other species, speculates on a worm's opinion of people, the communal life of starlings. The book ends on ideas of exits and entrances, home, absences within a family and the fragility of care. Making the Wedding Dress makes many unexpected connections, moving from sauna to plum tree, to a luxury yacht cruising off Brighton beach. It asks what crows think of humans, it urges its readers to question what is normal. Jackie Wills’ six previous collections have taken on big issues but her poems are always grounded. Her poems have been described as warm and witty, satirical, feminist and unputdownable. She starts with the mundane, then exaggerates – a list of the many words used to describe a woman, a sequence of short, impressionist poems on the surreality of menopause. Liz Lochhead described her 1995 debut, Powder Tower (Arc 1995), as “full of fabulous and exact fictions about ordinary family life”. Writer Robert Macfarlane described her second book Party (Leviathan 2000) as “a very fine collection indeed”.

Čo zostane, keď človek odloží všetky predstavy o sebe, opustí vonkajšie istoty a obráti sa do vlastného vnútra?
Odpoveď na túto otázku hľadala Lál Déd, jedna z najvýznamnejších mystičiek stredovekého Kašmíru. Jej krátke verše, nazývané vákhy, sa po stáročia šírili ústnym podaním a dodnes patria k pokladom indickej duchovnej literatúry.

Daleko od lidí je daleko od sebe. Jen s nimi jsme ve světě. Vše, co se stalo, a všechny, které jsme potkali, máme ve svém těle zapsané. Slovy, která jsou někdy až moc hluboko. Slovy, která na noc nejdou svléct. Proto když jsi ty tím, kdo je píše, přitlač. Vejdi do psaní celým tělem. Psaní je aktem odporu, ale taky péče, existence, kolektivního soužití. Piš. Tělo musí promluvit. Truchli, tanči, vzpomínej. Vracej se pohybem vpřed. Vypij soudek do dna, jinak se vypaří. Jako i my se nakonec vypaříme.

Trappist monk Paul Quenon spends his days in prayer, contemplation, and the monastery kitchen. These poems reflect those places and those moments. James Joyce's towering genius as a novelist has often overshadowed his achievements as a poet, yet his verse occupies a pivotal position in his career.
