Surrealists in New York
An absorbing group biography revealing how exiles from war-torn France brought surrealism to America, sparking the movement that became abstract expressionism.
Sensing the emerging disaster that was about to consume Europe, surrealists began to arrive in New York from Paris even before the outbreak of World War II. This engaging group biography tells their story and that of the artistic exchange between the Old World and the New. It takes as its focus the legendary Atelier 17 print studio, relocated from Paris to New York, where avant-garde artists could experiment and where abstract expressionist Jackson Pollock encountered surrealism in action for the very first time.
In 1957, in a catalog essay at a show at the Whitney Museum, New York, the American artist Robert Motherwell made an unexpected claim that abstract expressionism was neither new nor native. It had been born, he declared, of a brief liaison between America and France, an assertion that verged on the controversial. This was at the Whitney, no less, the lion’s den of American art. Motherwell’s remark is the launchpad of this book, which features André Breton, André Masson, Louise Bourgeois, Max Ernst, and other emigrants, including Stanley William Hayter, the founder of Atelier 17. Brett Charles Seiler
Brett Charles Seiler lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa, where he also graduated from the Ruth Prowse School of Art in 2015. Seiler's work has elements of painting, installation, and object art, with a strong emphasis on the use of text and language. Sometimes poetic, nostalgic, or romantic, it is an integral part of his art or stands on its own as a piece as well.
In his paintings, the space is indeterminate, the figures are not located and sketchily fleeting, the writing elements seem spontaneous like statements from street art. The colour scheme moves in a narrow spectrum between black, grey, white and brown tones, often using wood. His themes are sexual interaction, oppression, homosexuality, gender, men.
Originally from Zimbabwe, a state where human rights violations are commonplace, his work also makes a mark in the struggle for equal sexual orientation in education, media, and institutions. "[My work] is a deep longing for understanding. It is from the point of view of something that I've missed, something that I cannot go back to.

Mezičas/ Meantime - Adéla Matasová
Rozsáhlá monografie Mezičas v česko – anglické mutaci představuje laické i odborné veřejností systematicky a zevrubně zpracovaný umělecký odkaz Adély Matasové, jež v roce 2021 získala Cenu Ministerstva kultury za přínos v oblasti výtvarného umění, především za celoživotní uměleckou a pedagogickou činnost.
Publikace je strukturována do několika textových i obrazových částí. Kniha je členěna do čtyř zásadních kapitol, kterým předchází vizuální úvod prezentující dosud nepublikované, ve své době naprosto progresivní a inovátorské dílo. Jedná se o kreslený scénář a dokumentární fotografie k scénickému představení – Pohybová akce k hudbě E. Varése, které se uskutečnilo v divadle v Českých Budějovicích v roce 1974. Na toto překvapivé obrazové antré navazuje rozhovor hlavní editorky Pavlíny Morganové s Adélou Matasovou o žití ve složité době, o mezilidských vztazích, práci a umění. Rozhovor je graficky „podbarven“ dobovými osobními fotografickými záběry. Pak už následují stěžejní kunsthistorické a badatelské texty ve čtyřem oddělených kapitolách, které jsou prokládány reprodukcemi děl Matasové, pohledy do jejích výstav, realizací a projektů.
První kapitola, jejíž autorkou je výše zmiňována editorka a kunsthistorička Pavlína Morganová, nese název „Osobní výzkum světa. Tvorba před rokem 1989.“ P. Morganová zde sleduje tvorbu Matasové od prvotního formování umělkyně na studiích až po další umělecký vývoj v průběhu následujících 70. a 80. let.
Na tuto kapitolu úzce navazuje další textový vstup významné kurátorky a kunsthistoričky Martiny Pachmanové. Její badatelský příspěvek “Překonávat hranice těla a prostoru. Tvorba po roce 1990“ mapuje a analyzuje posun tvorby Matasové od Sametové revoluce až po její nejsoučasnější práce.
Následný text kurátorky GASK, Veroniky Marešové, „Cesta vody. Dešťové stěny a Site – Specific východiska“ cílí na exteriérové projekty, instalace a intervence ve veřejném prostoru či v krajině se zvláštním důrazem na nejaktuálnější instalaci Dešťovou stěnu IV v jezuitských zahradách Galerie Středočeského kraje – GASK v Kutné Hoře.
Poslední kapitola „Metasystémy“ kurátora Michala Kolečka je věnována retrospektivní výstavě se stejnojmenným názvem, jež barvitě a mnohovrstevnatě demonstrovala širokospektrální záběr autorky napříč jejím celoživotním dílem. Výstava Metasystémy (uskutečněná 20.3.-5.6. 2022 v GASK, KH) také aktivizovala myšlenku zrealizovat dosud nezpracovanou a nevydanou monografii Adély Matasové zabývající se hlouběji jejím uměním.
Závěr knihy krom životopisné chronologie a záznamu účasti na samostatných skupinových výstavách, sympoziích či stážích A. Matasové, obsahuje především sumární soupis děl s obrazovým doprovodem, jenž je velmi cenným encyklopedickým materiálem pro další badatelský výzkum na poli výtvarného umění.

Lucia Dovičáková (1981) patrí k neprehliadnuteľným umelkyniam na slovenskej výtvarnej scéne. V centre Dovičákovej záujmu je žena a jej obraz. Výstava Cítim sa ako… predstavuje diela Lucie Dovičákovej zo zbierky Galérie Nedbalka, ktoré odrážajú nosné témy objavujúce v autorkinej tvorbe od jej študentských čias po súčasnosť, rozdelené do tematických okruhov: Rozprávky o kráse, Žena a iné spotrebiče v domácnosti, Zvery v nás, Moja krv a mlieko a Cítim sa ako... Dovičákovej obrazy dokážu preklenúť priepasť medzi teóriou a každodennou realitou, medzi presvedčenými feministami*tkami a tými, ktorí*é pri pohľade na jej diela zažijú aha-moment napr. v podobe smiechu nad situáciou, ktorá je síce zveličením, ale zasahuje podstatu problému s milimetrovou presnosťou. Pražská Pallas a moravská Hellas 1902
V roce 1902 navštívil Prahu a Moravu francouzský sochař Auguste Rodin. Tato cesta, spojená s jeho tehdy největší zahraniční výstavou, byla důležitá nejen pro sochaře samotného, ale zanechala nesmazatelné stopy i v místě návštěvy. Byla zásadní pro tehdejší generaci malířů a zejména sochařů, kterým pomohla ujasnit si cestu k modernímu výtvarnému směřování, a předznamenala také budoucí orientaci naší výtvarné scény na francouzské umění. Z toho, co tehdejší umělecká a společenská elita považovala za důležité této významné návštěvě ukázat, lze navíc usuzovat mnohé o prioritách a charakteru české společnosti na počátku 20. století. Publikace se poprvé systematicky věnuje doprovodnému programu, který byl pro Rodina připraven. Na základě nového studia archivních pramenů (časopisů, korespondence, osobních archivů aj.) se snaží rovněž zmapovat důvody, proč přijel Auguste Rodin na Moravské Slovácko, kde navštívil Výstavu slovenských a moravských výtvarných umělců v Hodoníně a kde u příležitosti jeho návštěvy proběhla téměř „celoslovácká“ slavnost.
