Anna-Eva Bergman a Hans Hartung: A nic nás nerozdělí

Seurat

Georges Seurat (1859-1891) was only 31 when he died, but during his short life he created hundreds of drawings, oil sketches, and paintings on canvas that introduced a fresh perspective in European painting. As a student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he carefullly observed the work of Delacroix and became fascinated with the interplay between light and color. In doing so, he developed Divisionism, using small dabs of paint from the point of the brush to create pointilist images that shimmered with luminescence and hinted at movement. In this accessible introduction to Seurat, meet an artist driven by a need to capture nature and the simple pleasures of life through a new language of painting.

Hokusai. Beyond the Great Wave

An important publication on Hokusai's remarkable late work, originally published to accompany the acclaimed retrospective at the British Museum and now available in a compact edition. Hokusai (1760-1849) created sublime works during the last thirty years of his life, right up to his death at the age of almost ninety. This book presents fresh scholarship on the paintings and prints created by the artist during his final three decades, bringing together the finest examples to be found in Japan and around the world. Hokusai's personal beliefs are studied here through major brush paintings, drawings, woodblock prints and illustrated books. This publication gives due attention to the contribution of Hokusai's daughter Eijo (Oi), an accomplished artist in her own right. Hokusai continually explored the mutability and minutiae of natural phenomena in his art. His late subjects and styles were based on a mastery of eclectic Japanese, Chinese and European techniques and an encyclopedic knowledge of nature, myth and history. The collection of Hokusai's works draws on the finest to be found in Japan and around the world, making this a uniquely valuable overview of the artist's late career.

A všude kolem temná krása rozkladu. Jedno jestli z pozůstatků věcí a těl nebo rozvrácených dějin. Tehdy, stejně jako dnes.

Hokusai. Shunga

Beneath the Kimono The master’s complete erotica, gathered in one arresting volume If you think you know Hokusai (1760–1849), think again. Long before The Great Wave, the great master turned his hand (and eye) to something altogether more intimate. From maidservants and wives to courtesans, lovers, and curious onlookers – and, yes, an infamous pair of frisky octopuses – Hokusai’s shunga (literally “spring pictures”) are bold, joyful, and often laugh-out-loud funny. This comprehensive portfolio brings together eight complete books and print sets from 1786–1823, with many of their accompanying narratives penned by the artist himself. Blending the visual with the verbal, the pages brim with exaggerated anatomy, impish voyeurism, tender exchanges, and a surprisingly egalitarian attitude to enjoyment for both sexes. In contrast to the prudery of 18th-century Europe, Edo-period (1603–1868) Japan accepted sexuality as a natural part of life. With shunga officially banned but tolerated in practice, many reputable artists navigated government censorship to embrace the genre with gusto, albeit under pseudonyms. These works were made to entertain, to arouse, and even used for good luck – samurai carried them as talismans when going into battle. Technical innovations in printing during Hokusai’s lifetime allowed for rich colours and exquisitely rendered textiles, but the content remained delightfully human: full of risky rendezvous, stolen moments, and scenes of marital (or extra-marital) bliss. Realized with new photography of these rare works, and complemented by an in-depth introduction and explanatory essays, this retrospective offers gorgeous glimpses into a lesser-known but wildly imaginative thread in Hokusai’s over 70-year career: proof, perhaps, that great masters have their guilty pleasures too.

Edvard Munch: A to Z

Following key terms from A–Z, these books illuminate little-known aspects and shed new light on familiar motifs and themes. This time about the artist Edvard Munch Edvard Munch is one of the most famous painters of the early 20th century and a role model for many artists to this day. His legendary painting Scream even inspired a popular emoji, something that no other artist has ever achieved. Munch had a unique way of placing himself as an individual in the foreground of his art, making his psychological state the subject of his work. In doing so, he created a personal and at the same time universal “diary of the soul” that still captivates us today, as international exhibitions of the Norwegian artist show. In twenty-six short chapters, from A for anxiety to G for ghosts, R for revolvers and Z for zoo, familiar but also surprising aspects of his art and life are presented in a compelling way.

Egon Schiele: Last Years 1914-1918

The body of work by the eccentric artist Egon Schiele (1890-1918), created over a period of just ten years, is known above all through his major paintings and those drawings from between 1910 and around 1913/14 in which he processed his own emotional states and expressed the inner turmoil of an entire generation in his depictions of the human figure. His later works after 1914, which differ markedly from his earlier ones, and are less well known. His lines became more measured, flowing, and organic, and his figures filled out and were more realistic. In retrospect, the personal and historical changes and events from 1914 - the outbreak of war, his marriage to Edith Harms (1893-1918), and the tedium of army life - clearly had a profound effect on his artistic output. Among other things, Edith Schiele's almost unknown diary (1915-1918), in which she recorded her experiences, thoughts, and feelings in these difficult times, is published in full.

Cyklus vychádza z mikroskopických záberov včely podsvietených žltým a oranžovým svetlom, ktoré ma inšpirovali k ďalšej tvorbe- ku kresbám, maľbám a postupnému abstrahovaniu.

Hiroshige. One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, 45th Ed.

City lights and cherry trees The woodblock prints of Tokyo that captured Europe's imagination Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the last great artists in the ukiyo-e tradition. Literally meaning “pictures of the floating world,” ukiyo-e was a particular genre of art that flourished between the 17th and 19th centuries and came to characterize the Western world’s visual idea of Japan. In many ways images of hedonism, ukiyo-e scenes often represented the bright lights and attractions of Edo (modern-day Tokyo): beautiful women, actors and wrestlers, city life, and spectacular landscapes. Though he captured a variety of subjects, Hiroshige was most famous for landscapes, with a final masterpiece series known as “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo” (1856–1858), which depicted various scenes of the city through the seasons, from bustling shopping streets to splendid cherry orchards. This reprint is made from one of the finest complete original sets of woodblock prints belonging to the Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Tokyo. It pairs each of the 120 illustrations with a description, allowing readers to immerse themselves in these beautiful, vibrant vistas that became paradigms of Japonisme and inspired Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Art Nouveau artists alike, from Vincent van Gogh to James McNeill Whistler.

David Hockney. 220 for 2020

A Year in Normandy with David Hockney The course of the seasons in an artist’s book of iPad paintings From a small, picturesque farmhouse in the rich fields and meadows of Normandy, David Hockney followed the changing seasons across 2020 and into the new year. He used his iPad to spontaneously depict impressions of the landscape surrounding him, catching the first spring blossoms, the smell of summer, the saturated colors of autumn, and the stark shapes of dark branches in winter time. The 220 (plus four bonus) iPad paintings in this book are printed with six colors to match the richness of the artist’s vision. A short introduction by Hockney reveals how this planned project became a lifeline during the COVID lockdown, from which he spread his message of hope: “Remember they can’t cancel the spring.”

Art for All - Impressionists

Discover the lives and work of five iconic Impressionist artists This inspiring collection covers the work, the lives, and the enduring impact of five key Impressionists, in one volume that’s a primer and a celebration of probably the most popular artistic genre of all time. Each featured artist broke boundaries in different ways, astounding late 19th-century society with their boldness of vision and technique. Edgar Degas explored movement and the human form with masterly style and innovative compositions, most famously of dancers, racehorses, and busy streetscapes. Claude Monet was a maestro of light and atmosphere, capturing the fleeting moment with his iconic water lilies and series paintings. Pierre-Auguste Renoir celebrated beauty and sensuality, bringing vibrancy to everyday scenes with lush brushwork and a radiant palette. Paul Gauguin sought inspiration in the exotic, using bold colors and symbolism, often to unsettling effect. Finally, Vincent van Gogh’s highly emotive use of color and vigorous brushstrokes conveyed his private turmoil and did much to lay the groundwork for Expressionism. Together, these five creative masters redefined what art dared to achieve, emphasizing personal expression alongside their exploration of light, color, and perspective. Their output marked a pivotal shift to modern artistic freedoms and expectations. This collection looks beyond their most famous works and includes an extensive text on each artist’s oeuvre, alongside a detailed biography and more than 400 high-quality color illustrations.

Spanning four decades of the artist's work, it offers readers a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the personal and creative world of this internationally acclaimed artist. Yoshitomo Nara primarily identifies as a painter while working across a wide range of mediums, such as drawing, collage, sculpture, installation and materials including found objects, cardboard, wood, plaster, textile, ceramic and fibreglass. He is widely known for his bold images of children with large heads and wide eyes that challenge the viewers with their direct gaze and defiant stance. These captivating yet ominous characters are part of a wider visual vocabulary established by Nara to explore and communicate themes of home, isolation, resilience, belonging, regeneration, hope and freedom. Organised thematically, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution and breadth of Nara's artistic expression. It conveys Nara's singular aesthetic drawn from his formative experiences in Japan and his time in Germany, as well as his ongoing environmental and societal concerns, which are deeply rooted in nature and the communities of Japan's northern Tohoku region, where he grew up. This is in parallel with the inspiration he takes from popular music, which he has been listening to since childhood - folk songs by American singer-songwriters featuring antiwar messages, melancholic blues and, later, glam rock, punk and new wave. The Hayward Gallery presentation is an expanded version of the touring exhibition from the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and Museum Frieder Burda, Baden-Baden. It features a group of Nara's most recent paintings, including several new works.

Nicole Wittenberg

The highly anticipated first survey of the work of American painter Nicole Wittenberg Over the past two decades, Nicole Wittenberg has developed an expressive body of work that includes paintings of landscapes, portraits, and erotica. Best known for her vibrant and energetic mark making, Wittenberg creates seemingly spontaneous images from studies and drawings - oftentimes from life - which she synthesizes into much larger paintings on canvas. Weaving together painterly gestures across subject matter - some published here for the first time - this debut monograph features essays by the art historian Suzanne Hudson, the curator Devon Zimmerman, and the contemporary painter David Salle, as well as an extended conversation between the artist and writer Jarrett Earnest. These texts create an insightful portrait of Wittenberg as an artist. Presented in a beautiful cloth case showcasing details of one of her floral compositions, this book explores the full range of Wittenberg's artistic vision and represents the most significant publication of her work to date. The publication of the book coincides with two solo exhibitions of the artist's work, at the Ogunquit Museum of American Art and the Center for Maine Contemporary Art.
