INSTITUTO TERRA
Founded in 1998 at Aimorés in the state of Minas Gerais, Instituto Terra is the culmination of Lélia Wanick Salgado and Sebastiao Salgado’s lifelong activism and work as cultural documentarians. Through a scientific program of planting and raising saplings, the organization has performed a miraculous reforestation of the once infertile region and furthered the Salgados’ mission of reversing the damage done to our planet.

On a very fortuitous day in 1970, 26-year-old Sebastiao Salgado held a camera for the first time. When he looked through the viewfinder, he experienced a revelation: suddenly life made sense. From that day onward—though it took years of hard work before he had the experience to earn his living as a photographer—the camera became his tool for interacting with the world. Salgado, who “always preferred the chiaroscuro palette of black-and-white images,” shot very little color in his early career before giving it up completely.
Raised on a farm in Brazil, Salgado possessed a deep love and respect for nature; he was also particularly sensitive to the ways in which human beings are affected by their often devastating socio-economic conditions. Of the myriad works Salgado has produced in his acclaimed career, three long-term projects stand out: Workers (1993), documenting the vanishing way of life of manual laborers across the world; Migrations (2000), a tribute to mass migration driven by hunger, natural disasters, environmental degradation and demographic pressure; and this new opus, GENESIS, the result of an epic eight-year expedition to rediscover the mountains, deserts and oceans, the animals and peoples that have so far escaped the imprint of modern society—the land and life of a still-pristine planet. “Some 46% of the planet is still as it was in the time of genesis,” Salgado reminds us. “We must preserve what exists.” The GENESIS project, along with the Salgados’ Instituto Terra, are dedicated to showing the beauty of our planet, reversing the damage done to it, and preserving it for the future.

Lynchian
'What is it about David Lynch's cinematic bag of tricks - his shots of shadows and flickering electricity, his sinister soundscapes and his heartfelt scores, his dreamlike irrational stories - that affects us so deeply? How can he present us with trees swaying in the wind, or a character suddenly becoming another person, or more questions than answers, and it stays with us forever? And why is it that, when somebody else uses his tricks, it does not achieve the same results?'
The loss of David Lynch in January 2025 produced an extraordinary outpouring of love and grief that revealed how deeply he mattered. But the strength and size of this reaction came as a surprise to many. In life, Lynch was a wilfully obtuse cult filmmaker who had been unable to get a film financed for the last two decades of his life. In death, both the man himself and his work are unquestionably in the pantheon of all-time greats.
He leaves behind an adjective, 'Lynchian', a term used to describe work that echoes his. And yet, only Lynch could be truly Lynchian, and those who copy him fail to have an impact. So why does his work affect people so deeply? Why do some find it haunting and unforgettable while others dismiss it as meaningless? Answering that question takes us into the strange realms of psychology, art and theology. Rebel Without a Cause
Nicholas Ray’s 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause is a globally recognised landmark of post-war American cinema. The film follows twenty-four hours in the life of troubled teen Jim Stark (James Dean), the new boy in town, who becomes drawn into a maelstrom of shifting social allegiances, emotional turmoil, and violence. Rebel tackled head-on the thorny political issue of juvenile delinquency from the perspective of the adolescents, contributed to the genesis of the teen movie, and was pivotal in bringing The Method acting style to wider audiences. Dean’s nuanced and dextrous performance as the film’s lead character was paramount in establishing the actor’s iconicity.In his study of the film, Glyn Davis foregrounds the concept of rebellion, exploring in detail what it meant to be a rebel in the 1950s, the role that cinema has played in articulating rebellion and providing a haven for rebels, and why James Dean’s archetypal depiction of a teenage rebel has endured. Combining sharp close analysis with perceptive contextualisation, Davis scrutinises Nicholas Ray’s status as a maverick director, the challenges that The Method presented to calcified standards of performance in Hollywood, and the ways in which Rebel contributed to the shaping of new articulations of masculinity and sexuality. Pozdně osvícenská dramaturgie Jana Vedrala
Knižní rozhovor s významným českým divadelním a rozhlasovým dramaturgem, dramatikem a pedagogem Janem Vedralem (* 1955) nabízí unikátní možnost sledovat na osudu jednoho tvůrce vývoj české divadelní a rozhlasové tvorby posledního půlstoletí.

Jako člověk stojící uvnitř kulturního dění Vedral odkrývá mechanismy normalizační cenzury, postupné tání v letech osmdesátých, následně v rozsáhlé kapitole dosud málo historiograficky zpracované období transformace české kultury v letech devadesátých, včetně osobního zapojení do zásadních kulturně diplomatických snah o stabilizaci české kulturní sféry v podmínkách tržního hospodářství, až po poslední angažmá v novém tisíciletí.
Důležitou součástí knihy je pak také Vedralovo angažmá pedagogické, i tuto profesi přitom sledujeme ve vývojových fázích, s ohledem na komplementárnost všech tvůrčích oblastí, v nichž se autor po celý život pohyboval. Rozhovor s profesorem Vedralem vedl a knihu připravil rozhlasový a divadelní historik Tomáš Bojda.

In the words of Eduardo Barba: ‘Many works of art are full of plants. In others, they are a little more hidden. In all cases, botany is an indispensable part of the story that the artist wants to tell: there are flowers that allude to the dynasty of the person portrayed, leaves that sum up a feeling, trees that transmit to the scene qualities that are specific to them. The species chosen could be present in the artist's surroundings, even at the foot of his studio. On other occasions, however, and as a result of expeditions to different parts of the world, exotic plants from distant countries were incorporated, enriching the artistic flora, especially from the 16th century onwards. Institutionalised as a child for a gruesome double murder and having undergone experimental psychiatric treatment into adulthood, George Tatum is finally released into society... only to kill again. Of all the slasher films to appear in the 1980s, none were as brutal or would elicit as much controversy as Romano Scavolini''s Nightmare.
