Spaces for Learning

Translating contemporary pedagogical concepts into compelling and very diverse architectural solutions The basic mission of schools is to prepare future generations for life. In addition, they also serve as a means of identification for their community, helping to shape its character and self-image. Increasingly, the institution has evolved from a learning space to a living space for children and adolescents, offering extensive social functions and extracurricular activities. This expansion of tasks had a significant impact on the form and design of school buildings and grounds. With a focus on functionality, sustainability and compelling esthetic concepts, this volume presents a variety of approaches that will shape the school landscape of tomorrow. From elementary schools to high schools, the book offers insights into innovative concepts that are transforming learning and teaching and shows how pedagogy can be implemented in architecture in a contemporary and qualitative way.

Hairspray

Tracy Turnblad, a spunky, full-figured Baltimore teen, wants nothing more than to be a featured dancer on The Corny Collins Show. So when she gets chosen to be on the air, it seems like all her dreams are about to come true. But when she and some of the Black cast of the show try to integrate the segregated dancing, things take on a life of their own. A sweet, hopeful parable about the dangers of conformity and segregation, Hairspray is perhaps the one optimistic entry in John Waters’ shocking and delightfully deranged oeuvre. Both a clear-eyed social critique and a celebration of the dizzying aesthetics of Baltimore in the early 1960s, this is another, softer side to the essential John Waters.

Picturebook Makers: Part 2

Following the success of part one, twelve more world-class picturebook makers share their processes, inspire us with stunning illustrations, and demonstrate the immense creative potential of this unique and dynamic art form. Far from being simple, picturebook creation can be a complex, lengthy and enigmatic process. Part two of the Picturebook Makers series once again gives voice to twelve much-loved contemporary picturebook artists. With great generosity, the international creators share their processes, inspirations, challenges, doubts, insights, and show us that "the unseen evolution of an idea is as interesting as the final result", as observed by Shaun Tan in part one of this series. The intimate talks with the creators allow us to not only discover the myriad of ways in which the initial idea for a picturebook can arise, but also the wildly different creative processes which inform the development of each work. As Meghan Cox Gurdon observes in her review of Picturebook Makers in The Wall Street Journal: “There’s mystery in the process and, with luck, magic in the outcome.” The Picturebook Makers series reveals the picturebook’s immense creative potential, celebrates outstanding international picturebooks and their creators, and constitutes an inspiring collection of picturebook knowledge for anyone interested in this unique and dynamic art form. Featuring Carson Ellis, Axel Scheffler, Anna Höglund, Sydney Smith, Kristin Roskifte, André Letria, Issa Watanabe, Valerio Vidali, Anete Melece, Vincent Pianina, Marika Maijala, and Jimmy Liao.

Amsterdam Onder/Under

The hidden history of Amsterdam, beautifully designed by Irma Boom Beneath Amsterdam lies a hidden world. discarded, forgotten, and concealed. The city archaeologists have already uncovered many of these secrets for everyone to see. after all, the city continues to build upon what our predecessors, the 'Amsterdammers' of old, once left behind. The results of seventy years of archaeological digging and exploration have been carefully conserved and are stored in the archaeological depot. Irma Boom has crafted a surprising collection from thousands of finds, arranging them in her own sequence of form, color, and texture. These are everyday objects that were commonplace to the city dwellers of the past, yet often mysterious or still recognizable to us today. With the collection assembled by Irma Boom, she presents Amsterdam's archaeology in a new, aesthetic light. In doing so, she casts a personal glow on the objects that reflect the city's history, while giving each object space to tell its own unique story.

Sebastiao Salgado. Amazonia. 45th Ed.

Sebastiao Salgado traveled the Brazilian Amazon and photographed the unparalleled beauty of this extraordinary region for six years: the forest, the rivers, the mountains, the people who live there—an irreplaceable treasure of humanity. Salgado described the Brazilian Amazon as "the last frontier, a mysterious universe of its own, where the immense power of nature can be felt as nowhere else on earth. Here is a forest stretching to infinity that contains one-tenth of all living plant and animal species, the world’s largest single natural laboratory.” Salgado visited a dozen indigenous tribes that exist in small communities scattered across the largest tropical rainforest in the world. He documented the daily life of the Yanomami, the Asháninka, the Yawanawá, the Suruwahá, the Zo’é, the Kuikuro, the Waurá, the Kamayurá, the Korubo, the Marubo, the Awá, and the Macuxi—their warm family bonds, their hunting and fishing, the manner in which they prepare and share meals, their marvelous talent for painting their faces and bodies, the significance of their shamans, and their dances and rituals. Sebastiao Salgado has dedicated this book to the indigenous peoples of Brazil’s Amazon region: “My wish, with all my heart, with all my energy, with all the passion I possess, is that in 50 years’ time this book will not resemble a record of a lost world. Amazônia must live on.” INSTITUTO TERRA Founded in 1998 at Aimorés in the state of Minas Gerais, Instituto Terra is the culmination of Lélia Wanick Salgado and Sebastiao Salgado’s lifelong activism and work as cultural documentarians. Through a scientific program of planting and raising saplings, the organization has performed a miraculous reforestation of the once infertile region and furthered the Salgados’ mission of reversing the damage done to our planet.

Šťastnou cestu, kamaráde

Vzpomínkový knižní katalog na ostravsko-valmezského malíře Karla Noska (1991–2020). Nosek se uměl pohybovat na pomezí. Jeho malby někdy více, někdy méně insitní, byly dynamizovány pohybem, rychlostí, nebo expresivní gesticitou, nezřídka do obrazových ploch vmalovával textové poznámky. Rozhodně diváka nenechal klidným a pod rouškou vtipných narativů ukrýval kritické ostny.

Sebastiao Salgado. Genesis. 45th Ed.

A photographic homage to our planet “In GENESIS, my camera allowed nature to speak to me. And it was my privilege to listen.” —Sebastiao Salgado On a very fortuitous day in 1970, 26-year-old Sebastiao Salgado held a camera for the first time. When he looked through the viewfinder, he experienced a revelation: suddenly life made sense. From that day onward—though it took years of hard work before he had the experience to earn his living as a photographer—the camera became his tool for interacting with the world. Salgado, who “always preferred the chiaroscuro palette of black-and-white images,” shot very little color in his early career before giving it up completely. Raised on a farm in Brazil, Salgado possessed a deep love and respect for nature; he was also particularly sensitive to the ways in which human beings are affected by their often devastating socio-economic conditions. Of the myriad works Salgado has produced in his acclaimed career, three long-term projects stand out: Workers (1993), documenting the vanishing way of life of manual laborers across the world; Migrations (2000), a tribute to mass migration driven by hunger, natural disasters, environmental degradation and demographic pressure; and this new opus, GENESIS, the result of an epic eight-year expedition to rediscover the mountains, deserts and oceans, the animals and peoples that have so far escaped the imprint of modern society—the land and life of a still-pristine planet. “Some 46% of the planet is still as it was in the time of genesis,” Salgado reminds us. “We must preserve what exists.” The GENESIS project, along with the Salgados’ Instituto Terra, are dedicated to showing the beauty of our planet, reversing the damage done to it, and preserving it for the future. Over 30 trips—traveled by foot, light aircraft, seagoing vessels, canoes, and even balloons, through extreme heat and cold and in sometimes dangerous conditions—Salgado created a collection of images showing us nature, animals, and indigenous peoples in breathtaking beauty. What does one discover in GENESIS? The animal species and volcanoes of the Galápagos; penguins, sea lions, cormorants, and whales of the Antarctic and South Atlantic; Brazilian alligators and jaguars; African lions, leopards, and elephants; the isolated Zo’é tribe deep in the Amazon jungle; the Stone Age Korowai people of West Papua; nomadic Dinka cattle farmers in Sudan; Nenet nomads and their reindeer herds in the Arctic Circle; Mentawai jungle communities on islands west of Sumatra; the icebergs of the Antarctic; the volcanoes of Central Africa and the Kamchatka Peninsula; Saharan deserts; the Negro and Juruá rivers in the Amazon; the ravines of the Grand Canyon; the glaciers of Alaska... and beyond. Having dedicated so much time, energy, and passion to the making of this work, Salgado calls GENESIS “my love letter to the planet.”

Lynchian

'What is it about David Lynch's cinematic bag of tricks - his shots of shadows and flickering electricity, his sinister soundscapes and his heartfelt scores, his dreamlike irrational stories - that affects us so deeply? How can he present us with trees swaying in the wind, or a character suddenly becoming another person, or more questions than answers, and it stays with us forever? And why is it that, when somebody else uses his tricks, it does not achieve the same results?' The loss of David Lynch in January 2025 produced an extraordinary outpouring of love and grief that revealed how deeply he mattered. But the strength and size of this reaction came as a surprise to many. In life, Lynch was a wilfully obtuse cult filmmaker who had been unable to get a film financed for the last two decades of his life. In death, both the man himself and his work are unquestionably in the pantheon of all-time greats. He leaves behind an adjective, 'Lynchian', a term used to describe work that echoes his. And yet, only Lynch could be truly Lynchian, and those who copy him fail to have an impact. So why does his work affect people so deeply? Why do some find it haunting and unforgettable while others dismiss it as meaningless? Answering that question takes us into the strange realms of psychology, art and theology. We will discover why ambiguity and mystery are so seductive, how Lynch's creative and meditative practices overlapped and why a director whose work contains so much abuse of women has such a female-skewing fanbase. Through a personal, first-person lens, Lynchian unpacks the mystery but refuses to solve the enigma of an artist whose work reshaped cinema from the inside out - where story gives way to dreams, and meaning lies not in answers, but in experience.

Rebel Without a Cause

Nicholas Ray’s 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause is a globally recognised landmark of post-war American cinema. The film follows twenty-four hours in the life of troubled teen Jim Stark (James Dean), the new boy in town, who becomes drawn into a maelstrom of shifting social allegiances, emotional turmoil, and violence. Rebel tackled head-on the thorny political issue of juvenile delinquency from the perspective of the adolescents, contributed to the genesis of the teen movie, and was pivotal in bringing The Method acting style to wider audiences. Dean’s nuanced and dextrous performance as the film’s lead character was paramount in establishing the actor’s iconicity. In his study of the film, Glyn Davis foregrounds the concept of rebellion, exploring in detail what it meant to be a rebel in the 1950s, the role that cinema has played in articulating rebellion and providing a haven for rebels, and why James Dean’s archetypal depiction of a teenage rebel has endured. Combining sharp close analysis with perceptive contextualisation, Davis scrutinises Nicholas Ray’s status as a maverick director, the challenges that The Method presented to calcified standards of performance in Hollywood, and the ways in which Rebel contributed to the shaping of new articulations of masculinity and sexuality. Ray’s film, Davis ultimately argues, has an ambiguous stance on rebellion, depicting both the lure and the terror of rejecting conformity.Davis examines the significant contributions to Rebel Without a Cause made by an array of cast and crew members: from screenwriter Stewart Stern to composer Leonard Rosenman, from production designer Malcolm Bert to costume designer Moss Mabry, from lead actors such as Dean and Mineo to secondary players such as Marietta Canty and Edward Platt. Highlighting the film''s shifting critical reception, he unpacks its legacy and the reasons that it continues to resonate with contemporary audiences.

Pozdně osvícenská dramaturgie Jana Vedrala

Knižní rozhovor s významným českým divadelním a rozhlasovým dramaturgem, dramatikem a pedagogem Janem Vedralem (* 1955) nabízí unikátní možnost sledovat na osudu jednoho tvůrce vývoj české divadelní a rozhlasové tvorby posledního půlstoletí. Jako člověk stojící uvnitř kulturního dění Vedral odkrývá mechanismy normalizační cenzury, postupné tání v letech osmdesátých, následně v rozsáhlé kapitole dosud málo historiograficky zpracované období transformace české kultury v letech devadesátých, včetně osobního zapojení do zásadních kulturně diplomatických snah o stabilizaci české kulturní sféry v podmínkách tržního hospodářství, až po poslední angažmá v novém tisíciletí. Důležitou součástí knihy je pak také Vedralovo angažmá pedagogické, i tuto profesi přitom sledujeme ve vývojových fázích, s ohledem na komplementárnost všech tvůrčích oblastí, v nichž se autor po celý život pohyboval. Rozhovor s profesorem Vedralem vedl a knihu připravil rozhlasový a divadelní historik Tomáš Bojda. Kniha je doplněna rozsáhlým jmenným rejstříkem a vychází k sedmdesátým narozeninám Jana Vedrala. – Vydání knihy ve spolupráci s Univerzitou Palackého v Olomouci podpořilo Ministerstvo kultury ČR.

Hollywood Haunts the World

Robert Guffey''s Hollywood Haunts the World: An Investigation into the Cinema of Occulted Taboos covers 100 years of cinematic history, ranging from Victor Sjostrom''s The Phantom Carriage in 1921 to Guillermo del Toro''s Nightmare Alley in 2021. Over nine chapters, Guffey deconstructs the most powerful taboos of the twentieth century (and the initial decades of the twenty-first century) by analyzing how disturbing and transgressive ideas involving Theosophy, Gnosticism, Freemasonry, Darwinian Evolution, Surrealism, Freudian and Jungian psychology, race relations, paranoia, UFOs, xenophobia, political conspiracies, the JFK assassination, virtual reality, and alternate dimensions have been reflected in popular films in America and worldwide. Films and TV shows that come under scrutiny include Guillermo del Toro''s Nightmare Alley, Larry Wade Carell''s Girl Next, Matt Shakman''s WandaVision, Anthony and Joe Russo''s Avengers: Infinity War, Scott Derrickson''s Dr. Strange, Steven Spielberg''s Ready Player One, Jennifer Kent''s The Babadook, Christopher Nolan''s Inception, Stanley Kubrick''s Eyes Wide Shut, Vince Gilligan''s Breaking Bad, Oliver Stone''s JFK, Mark Frost and David Lynch''s Twin Peaks, John Carpenter''s They Live, Alan Pakula''s The Parallax View, John Frankenheimer''s The Manchurian Candidate, Jack Arnold''s It Came from Outer Space, Edgar G. Ulmer''s The Man from Planet X, Robert Florey''s Murders in the Rue Morgue, Buster Keaton''s Sherlock Jr., Victor Sjostrom''s The Phantom Carriage, and more.

Cinema of Crushing Motherhood

Breaking down recent films about the dark side of motherhood Twenty-first century contemporary films like Emily Atef’s Das Fremde in mir and Savannah Leaf’s Earth Mama portray motherhood as a source of regret, exhaustion, rage, shame, guilt, and disgust. Olivia Landry analyzes this new feminist cinema and the ways it embraces and explores the crushing burden of mothering children. Landry surveys films released in North America, Europe, and Australia over a period beginning in 2007. As she shows, revelation and the expression of negative feelings upend the traditional image of the perfect, self-sacrificial, and happy mother. Landry tracks how radical positions like maternal regret and family abolition have replaced age-old tropes while also going beyond portrayals of maternal ambivalence. Her feminist method casts off psychoanalysis and renounces pathological approaches to motherhood to show how a generation of filmmakers have insisted on the subjective position and experience of the mother rather than that of the child. Bold and groundbreaking, Cinema of Crushing Motherhood looks at taboo-breaking films and illuminates the emotions and affects that make them so powerful.

A History of the World in 50 Pieces

Explore how music has changed our world through 50 pieces across classical, folk and world traditions with BBC presenter Tom Service, in this official Radio 3 compendium. Music transports us and defines us. As a form of expression, it has been passed down through oral tradition, musical notation and recordings in a chain of connection that spans the globe, across the millennia. A History of the World in 50 Pieces follows that chain, collating 50 pieces of classical music that reflect our changing politics, social structures and technological development, and how composers, musicians and listeners have shaped those currents of history. From Bach to Beethoven, Songlines to Saariaho, Hildegard of Bingen to the Happy Birthday song, Tom Service offers a fresh take on pieces that many of us think we know, and many more we might not. With each short, sharp analysis, he expands the typical canon and tests the boundaries of what we understand to be 'classical music' - or even music at all, such as the sounds of the earth's rotation, and the songs of humpback whales. An official BBC Radio 3 publication, A History of the World in 50 Pieces is a book for anyone curious about the power of music and how it shapes us and connects us.

The Hidden Language of Flowers

Thirty botanical species represented in as many works in the Museo del Prado: outstanding paintings and sculptures from the permanent collection. This volume focuses on thirty botanical species represented in as many works in the Museo del Prado: outstanding paintings and sculptures from the permanent collection, such as Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights, Van der Weyden's The Descent from the Cross and Fra Angelico's The Annunciation. Each of the thirty plants is accompanied by a commentary by Eduardo Barba and a botanical illustration by Juan Luis Castillo, as well as a complete detailed reproduction of the work in the Museum. In the words of Eduardo Barba: ‘Many works of art are full of plants. In others, they are a little more hidden. In all cases, botany is an indispensable part of the story that the artist wants to tell: there are flowers that allude to the dynasty of the person portrayed, leaves that sum up a feeling, trees that transmit to the scene qualities that are specific to them. The species chosen could be present in the artist's surroundings, even at the foot of his studio. On other occasions, however, and as a result of expeditions to different parts of the world, exotic plants from distant countries were incorporated, enriching the artistic flora, especially from the 16th century onwards. In any case, the works of art bear witness to the fascinating ability of artists to observe the natural environment, who portrayed plants with delicacy, as if they were just another character.

Dark Dreams

Institutionalised as a child for a gruesome double murder and having undergone experimental psychiatric treatment into adulthood, George Tatum is finally released into society... only to kill again. Of all the slasher films to appear in the 1980s, none were as brutal or would elicit as much controversy as Romano Scavolini''s Nightmare. From round-the-clock screenings in New York City to becoming a popular VHS rental, the film was quickly championed by gorehounds thirsting for onscreen blood while alienating many others. Onscreen carnage was only the beginning. Critics found the film offensive and its moral tone ambiguous. The gruesome special effects were subject to fierce debate. The UK distributor served a prison sentence for releasing the film uncut, provocatively retitled as Nightmares in a Damaged Brain. It became one of the most notorious of the so-called ''video nasties''. Author Nick Cato first experienced Nightmare as part of a double feature in 1983. He is not alone in considering it one of the most intense horror films of all time. He is alone in having spent over forty years amassing material on the film, sitting through countless reviews (mostly negative) and magazine articles, attending dozens of theatrical screenings, and conducting many interviews. This book is the result. Dark Dreams - a fan obsessed. Nightmare - a slasher film that refuses to die.
