Is it really art?
Why does it cost so much?
While these questions are perpetually asked about contemporary art, they are not the questions that E. H. Gombrich set out to answer in his seminal book The Story of Art. Contemporary art is very different from what came before. From the 1960s, where Gombrich's account concludes, artists began to abandon traditional forms of art and started to make work that questioned art's very definition. This is where Godfrey picks up the story.
Developments in contemporary art have followed no straightforward line of progress or sequence of movements. Recognizing this, Tony Godfrey creates a narrative from a series of often dramatic creative conflicts and arguments around what art is or should be. Mariánský sloup
Kniha přístupnou a atraktivní formou pojednává o vzniku, stržení i obnově mariánského sloupu na Staroměstském náměstí v Praze.
Sloup byl postaven jako pomník k poctě Bohorodičky na poděkování za obranu Prahy před pleněním švédských vojsk v roce 1648. Místo, kde stál a opět stojí, lze bez obav označit za duchovní střed Prahy i Evropy. Dílo českého raněbarokního sochaře Jana Jiřího Bendla považují mnozí po zásluze za umělecky hodnotnější, než jsou podobné sloupy ve Vídni a v Mnichově.
Autor nezastírá, že sloup je předmětem ostrých historických, politických a konfesních sporů, volá ovšem po vzájemném porozumění a usmíření. Když se sloup v listopadu 1918 stal terčem politováníhodného vandalského činu, nikdo netušil, že se jeho obnovy dočkáme až v létě 2020. Stržení sloupu se ale mezitím stalo mohutným impulsem pro výstavbu řady nových kostelů na různých místech Prahy (viz epilog knihy).
Autor uvádí do pozoruhodných souvislostí stavby, události i osobnosti, spjaté s Mariánským sloupem. Jeho výklad doprovázejí desítky fotografií, ukázky z dobových dokumentů, reprodukce výtvarných děl, ale i modlitby, dopisy, básně a věroučné reflexe.
Ballet
Following his career-spanning monograph The Big Picture, Arthur Elgort pays homage to his first love and eternal muse in this new collection of photographs. Through Elgort’s lens we encounter ballet not onstage but behind the scenes where the hard work is done. On this journey through the hallways and rehearsal spaces of some of the world’s most distinguished ballet schools, including the New York City Ballet and the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, we see previously unpublished images of legends such as Balanchine, Baryshnikov and Lopatkina. The perfection of the prima ballerina disappears in these quiet photographs where the viewer is able to witness the individual dancers’ natural glamor as they work to perfect their craft.

Arthur Elgort, born in 1940 in New York City, has photographed the world’s most beautiful and talented people for over 40 years. He has published seven books to date, including Personal Fashion (1983), The Swan Prince (1987), Models Manual (1993) and Camera Ready (1997). In addition to Ballet, Edition 7L has published Camera Crazy (2004) and The Big Picture (2014).
Jamie Hewlett
From the legendary Tank Girl to live-action animations with Gorillaz, a Chinese contemporary opera to an exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery, artist Jamie Hewlett is one of the most energetic figures of contemporary pop culture.
With influences ranging from hip hop to zombie slasher movies, Hewlett emerged in the mid-1990s as co-creator of the zeitgeist-defining Tank Girl comic. With then-roommate Damon Albarn, he went on to create the groundbreaking cartoon band Gorillaz. The award-winning virtual pop group of animated characters is a truly global phenomenon. Gorillaz have topped charts around the world, toured the globe from San Diego to Syria, and picked up hundreds of millions of streams and record sales along the way.
Since then, Hewlett has continued to collaborate with Albarn on projects including an elaborate staging of the Chinese novel Monkey: Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en, complete with circus acrobats, Shaolin monks, and Chinese singers. In 2006, he was named Designer of the Year by the Design Museum in London, and in 2009, Hewlett and Albarn won a BAFTA for their animated Monkey sequence for the Beijing Olympic Games. In 2015 The Suggestionists, an exhibition of prints at the Saatchi Gallery in London, demonstrated an exciting new direction in Hewlett's practice.
