Henri Cartier-Bresson Interviews and Conversations, 1951-1998
A major new work, Tenancy is comprised of 42 photographs by Robert Adams (born 1937) made in Nehalem Bay State Park, Oregon, between 2013 and 2015, with short texts by the artist. The book's theme of tenancy expresses the idea of "temporary possession of what belongs to another"--specifically, the natural environment. Adams' recent photographs of the landscape reference the current and imminent threats of clearcutting, environmental degradation and natural disasters along the Northwestern coast of the US. The black-and-white photographs include poignant images of massive tree stumps on the beach--a product of the cutting of first and early second growth--as well as shimmering stretches of coastline protected for endangered birds previously thought to have abandoned northern Oregon.
Iggy & the Stooges
In May 1970, The Stooges were in the middle of recording their celebrated album, Fun House at Elektra Records Recording Studio in Los Angeles. That same month, they appeared at the Whisky a Go-Go on Sunset Boulevard for two incredible nights. Ed Caraeff, a new rock photographer who had burst onto the scene three years prior with his now-iconic image of Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar onstage at Monterey, happened to be in that crowd, and took a plethora of wonderful pictures. Only a few stills from that phenomenal gig were ever reproduced. Most famously, one was used on the cover of Fun House. The rest were filed away. Until now. One of the most beautiful books on the history of fashion ever produced is now back in print. Swedish by birth, Parisian by inclination, and American following her 1950 marriage to Irving Penn, Lisa Fonssagrives was, for three decades, the most sought-after model of fashion photography. She posed for Man Ray, Erwin Blumenfeld, Louise Dahl- Wolfe, Norman Parkinson, Richard Avedon, for her first husband Fernand Fonssagrives, her fellow European immigrant Horst P. Horst, and, of course, her second husband Irving Penn. Compiled and arranged by fashion photographer David Seidner in 1997, the book draws upon a collection of photographs which once belonged to Lisa Fonssagrives. It is an opulently produced homage to the first supermodel in the history of fashion and a nostalgic look back on the Golden Age of fashion photography in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.

Renaissance presence Hans Holbein the Younger, portraitist extraordinaire Religion, Renaissance, and Reformation - these three ideologies shaped the world of 16th-century portraitist Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/98-1543), a pivotal figure of the Northern Renaissance, whose skills took him to Switzerland, Belgium, Italy, and England, and garnered patrons and subjects as prestigious as Henry VIII, Thomas More, Anne of Cleves, and Reformation advocate Thomas Cromwell. While he started out with, and maintained, a repertoire of religious works, Holbein is regarded above all as one of the greatest portraitists in Western art history. His probing eye was matched with a draftsman mastery of line and an almost supernatural ability to control details, from the textures of luxurious clothing to the ornament of a room. He combined this meticulous mimesis with an inspired amalgam of regional painterly traits, combining Flemish-style realism, late medieval German composition, and Italian formal grandeur to astonishing effect. During his time in England, Holbein became official court painter to Henry VIII, producing both reformist propaganda and royalist paintings to bolster Henry' status as monarch and as the new Supreme Head of the Church following the English Reformation. His portrait of Henry from 1537 is regarded not only as a portraiture pinnacle but also as an iconic record of this transformative monarch and the Tudor dynasty. Through this turbulent period, Holbein also produced anti-clerical woodcuts, and sketched and painted Lutheran merchants, visiting ambassadors, and Henry's notorious succession of wives. In this Basic Art introduction, we survey some of Holbein's key works from his illustrious and international career. Along the way, we discover a period as ripe with artistic innovation as with courtly drama and radical religious change, and an artist who made as much of a historical mark as the subjects he painted.
