Japan on a Glass Plate
Drawing from an extensive private collection assembled over many years, this book presents a unique selection of nineteenth-century photographs of Japan, many of which are published here for the first time.
Between the twilight years of the Tokugawa shogunate (1603–1867) and the end of the Meiji Era (1868–1912) that followed it, photography offered a unique insight into the rapid transformation of Japan from an isolated, feudal society to a modern, industrialised state. In the four decades that followed the opening of the country in 1853, the camera evolved from an imported novelty to a familiar witness of Japanese daily life.
Operating from the Treaty Ports of Yokohama and elsewhere, early practitioners of photography plied an often precarious trade in images of Japan and laid the foundations of what would soon become a highly competitive industry with a global reach. Whether cherished as souvenirs of an exotic land of fond imagination or curated as visual documents of a fast-changing society, these images by foreign and Japanese photographers, often packaged in exquisitely produced albums, enjoyed a wide circulation abroad and played an important role in influencing perceptions of Japan in the West well into the early twentieth century.

Kolektivní monografie autorů z Filozofické fakulty UK pojednává o Wagnerově nechvalně proslulém spisu Židovství v hudbě a obecněji o sociálně-politických aspektech provozování Wagnerových oper. Jednotlivé kapitoly představují různé kontextualizace Wagnerova spisu, skladatelovy osoby i otázky spojené s prováděním a přijímáním jeho oper. Stranou nezůstává zasazení do kontextu dobové filosofie a německé romantiky, souvislost s dalšími Wagnerovými spisy, problematika uvádění Wagnerových oper ve státě Izrael nebo revize obecně přijímaných představ o karikaturách Židů ve vrcholném Wagnerově hudebním díle, v Prstenu Nibelungově. Každá z těchto kapitol se pokouší o problematizaci některého z významných aspektů kauzy „Wagner a Židé“, aniž by usilovala o jednoznačné řešení. Editoři a autoři si kladli za cíl především korekci některých zažitých stereotypů a přesnější vymezení problému.
Arnold Bartůněk
První souhrnná publikace o českém sochaři a restaurátoru Arnoldu Bartůňkovi (1955) představuje jeho formální a umělecký vývoj od 80. let minulého století po současnost, od drobnějších děl komorního charakteru vznikajících v ateliéru až po rozměrnější realizace ve veřejném prostoru. K těm posledním patří například mramorová socha nazvaná Slavěna, vytvořená k poctě stého výročí vzniku Československé republiky, jež byla odhalena v Litomyšli v roce 2018. Přehled jeho celoživotní tvorby doplňují reprodukce figurálních kreseb z posledního desetiletí. Vybrané střídmé texty odrážející autorovy myšlenky a postoje ozřejmují formální a ideová východiska jeho práce.

Sochař se žádným krokem nikdy nezpronevěřil svému hlavnímu záměru: usilovat o dominanci krásy, která je výsledkem souladu ušlechtilého materiálu, inspirujícího motivu, stability sochy a naplnění uměleckých řešení a cílů. Název publikace Sochař a architekt. Korespondence Františka Bílka s Josefem Fantou parafrázuje titul vydaný roku 1948, uveřejňující tehdy korespondenci Bílka s básníkem Juliem Zeyerem. Právě prostřednictvím Zeyera a Zdenky Braunerové se mladý Bílek seznámil též s architektem Josefem Fantou (1856–1954). Povaha jejich epizodického (a příznačně ambivalentního) přátelství a jeho význam pro Bílkovu tvorbu dosud nebyly předmětem badatelského zájmu. Jejich vzájemná korespondence obsahuje množství neznámých informací týkajících se především sochařova raného tvůrčího období a ozřejmuje okolnosti některých jeho důležitých zakázek. Komentovaná edice dopisů obou umělců je uvedena souborem několika vybraných, dosud rovněž nepublikovaných písemností přibližujících Bílkovy nesnadné začátky včetně jeho vlastního popisu pověstné osudové konfrontace s Josefem Václavem Myslbekem v září 1892. S cílem zpřístupnit Bílkovu pozoruhodnou osobnost a jeho dílo i zahraničním badatelům je celá publikace dvojjazyčná; do angličtiny tak byly přeloženy i transkribované dopisy. Edice dosud nepublikované vzájemné korespondence sochaře Františka Bílka (1872?1941) a architekta Josefa Fanty (1856?1954) obsahuje množství neznámých informací o Bílkově raném tvůrčím období a některých jeho důležitých zakázkách. Fanta sice patřil k blízkým přátelům Julia Zeyera, jeho vztah s Bílkem byl nicméně příznačně komplikovaný a kontroverzní. Komentovaná a kontextualizovaná edice dopisů obou umělců je doplněna úvodní studií a několika dalšími – zde nově publikovanými – písemnostmi ozřejmujícími nesnadné Bílkovy počátky včetně osudového střetu s Myslbekem v září 1892.

1974–1981 Vysoká škola uměleckoprůmyslová Praha (Bohuslav Felcman) V letech 1983–1989 byla kostýmní výtvarnicí v Divadle F. X. Šaldy v Liberci. Pak začala podnikat jako oděvní návrhářka pod logem Zdena Šafka (1989–1998). Přišlo několik ocenění i zakázka na slavnostní uniformy pro olympijské hry v Lillehammeru (1994), ale podnik se nepodařilo udržet. Následovalo pětileté období, kdy autorka působila jako odborná asistentka na Katedře designu Technické univerzity v Liberci. Teprve potom šla na volnou nohu a věnovala se plně volné tvorbě. Vedle práce na tapiseriích začala také malovat. Od figurální tvorby postupně přecházela ke krajinám a přírodě. Když získala dům v Kryštofově Údolí, začala pracovat na sérii Nejkrásnější viadukt, která byla poprvé vystavena v místním Muzeu betlémů (2014). Pak přišlo další zjednodušování forem až téměř na plošný obrys. I přesto je zejména z obrazů „lesních interiérů“ cítit, že jsou inspirovány Jizerskými horami. V roce 2017 jí vyšla monografie. Působí ve Vraném nad Vltavou a Kryštofově Údolí.

„… ak milujete maľbu, zaujímate sa o všetky jej formy, o všetky jej školy. Keď som však uvidel niektoré Kandinského obrazy, tie najťažšie, posledné, tie z parížskeho obdobia, bol som úplne fascinovaný a chcel som svoju skúsenosť pochopiť. Bolo vecou náhody, že som sa ponoril do Kandinského spisov, ktorý nielenže absolútne brilantným spôsobom teoretizoval vlastnú maľbu, ale vytvoril aj všeobecnú estetickú teóriu. Vtedy som objavil základy estetiky, ktoré by zodpovedali tézam, ktoré obhajujem vo filozofii. Kandinského demonštrácia bola oslnivá a relatívne prístupná, pretože ťažila z podpory maliarskej tvorby, ktorá bola schopná podoprieť tézy, ktoré zjavne odporovali každému existujúcemu maliarstvu. Západné maliarstvo bolo totiž vo svojom projekte maľbou sveta, pokiaľ si z neho požičiavalo figúry, formy a farby. (…) Nikdy v žiadnej inej oblasti mi nikto nedal kľúč k odpovediam na moje otázky tak ako Kandinský.”
