Hilma af Klint: Tree of Knowledge
One of the most inventive artists of the twentieth century, Hilma af Klint was a pioneer of abstraction. Her first forays into her imaginative non-objective painting long preceded the work of Kandinsky and Mondrian and radically mined the fields of science and religion. Deeply interested in spiritualism and philosophy, af Klint developed an iconography that explores esoteric concepts in metaphysics, as demonstrated in Tree of Knowledge. This rarely seen series of watercolors renders orbital, enigmatic forms, visual allegories of unification and separateness, darkness and light, beginning and end, life and death, and spirit and matter.
Published on the occasion of the exhibition Hilma af Klint: Tree of Knowledge at David Zwirner New York in 2021 and David Zwirner London in 2022, this catalogue features a text by the art historian Susan Aberth examining af Klint's spiritual and anthroposophical influences. With a conversation between the curator Helen Molesworth and the US Poet Laureate Joy Harjo discussing connections between Tree of Knowledge and native theories about plant knowledge, the publication broadens the scope of philosophical interpretations of af Klint's timeless work. Also included is a newly commissioned essay by the celebrated af Klint scholar Julia Voss, a contribution by the artist Suzan Frecon, and a text by art historian Max Rosenberg that further develops the conversation around why af Klint's work was not recognized in its time.

Drawing on the avant-garde movements of both Expressionism and Surrealism, the women of Abstract Expressionism redefined artistic practice as an immersive arena for action, process and consciousness. Their paintings were regarded not as images but as events. Although the movement officially began in mid-century USA, it quickly – through myriad means – spread around the world and became a catalyst for redefining ideas around aesthetics, poetry, philosophy and politics.
This new publication, accompanying a major European touring exhibition, will include works by 40 artists from across the globe, from well-known practitioners such as Carmen Herrera, Etel Adnan, Sandra Blow and Helen Frankenthaler, to lesser-known names from countries such as Australia, China, Iceland, Japan, Mexico, Mozambique, Romania and Venezuela: women who took up the ideas and methodologies of the movement but endowed them with specific cultural and subjective dimensions.

Celebrating the dynamic and enduring collaboration between two icons of fashion and photography
In the 1970s, despite not yet knowing each other, Azzedine Alaia and Arthur Elgort were responding to a similar current within the cultural landscape. Alaia realized that fashion had changed; its locus had shifted from the salons to the streets. Elgort, then a young photographer for American Vogue, was in the process of establishing a new vision for photography that also moved outdoors, away from the studio; his “snapshots'' ushered in a more informal photographic style marked by its spontaneity. Both actively contributed to popularizing the mobile, assertive and independent woman within fashion.
This book commemorates the long collaboration between Ala?a and Elgort. Many of the images produced by the duo are considered classics, emblematic of the late 20th century. This volume reproduces approximately 200 of these dynamic, playful photographs, many of which feature Ala?a himself.
Arthur Elgort (born 1940) studied painting at Hunter College but quickly transitioned to photography. In his long career he has worked on many major advertising campaigns, including for Chanel, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent, shot countless fashion spreads and published several books, including Personal Fashion (1983), The Swan Prince (1987), Models Manual (1993), Ballet Camera Crazy (2004), The Big Picture (2014), Jazz (2018) and I Love…. (2019).
Azzedine Alaia (1935–2017) was a Tunisian couturier and shoe designer. He produced his first ready-to-wear collection in 1980. When his clothes were first sold at Bergdorf Goodman in 1982, it was considered so momentous that the New York Times later listed it as among the landmark events that altered the city’s cultural landscape. Among his devotees were Grace Jones (who wore several of his creations in A View to a Kill), Tina Turner, Raquel Welch, Madonna, Janet Jackson and Naomi Campbell.

Předkládá komplexní dějiny architektury 20. století a přináší neidealizovaný pohled na vývoj západní architektury od roku 1918 až do současnosti. Publikace vychází z dizertační práce realizované pod vedením doc. Lady Hubatové-Vackové a obhájené na Katedře teorie a dějin umění UMPRUM v roce 2019. Ústředním tématem projektu je proměna vizuálních motivů a symbolů masových tělovýchovných performancí od šedesátých let 19. století do roku 1989. Struktura textu vychází z předpokladu, že vizuální motivy a symboly migrují a že se jejich význam mění na základě konkrétního společenského a kulturního kontextu. Proměna vizuální reprezentace tělesné kultury je analyzována prostřednictvím konkrétních vizuálních a performativních znaků v reprezentaci Sokola, dělnických tělovýchovných jednot, federace proletářské tělovýchovy a československých celostátních spartakiád. Stavbou prvního Goetheana založil Rudolf Steiner nový stavební sloh, nový, převratný směr architektury. V přednáškách vysvětluje jeho principy, které vycházejí z naléhavých potřeb současné epochy ve vývoji lidstva, a ukazuje též zákonitosti vývoje architektury jako takové. Uplatňování zón setkávání (sdílených prostorů) může být v řadě případů optimální reakcí na požadavky aplikace principů trvale udržitelné mobility a podpory pěší dopravy. Zóna setkávání (sdílený prostor) je urbanisticko-dopravní koncept založený na využívání prostoru ulice či veřejného prostranství všemi módy funkčního využití a dopravy. Jejich zavádění má za cíl především návrat k původnímu vnímání ulice jako prostoru pro veřejný život obyvatel, nikoli jako prvku dopravní infrastruktury. Pomáhá vytvářet podmínky pro vyváženost společenské, ekonomické, pobytové i dopravní funkce uličního prostoru. Úspěšné příklady ze zahraničí dokazují, že realizací zón setkávání dochází ke snížení rychlosti a zklidnění motorové dopravy, zvýšení bezpečnosti všech uživatelů prostoru, zvýšení efektivity využití uličního prostoru, zvýšení úrovně socializace a komunitní aktivity, zvýšení atraktivity ulice jako veřejného prostranství, zlepšení životního prostředí, oživení parteru a k podpoře lokální ekonomiky. Přestože přínosy zón setkávání (sdílených prostorů) jsou v praxi ověřené mnoha úspěšnými zahraničními realizacemi, v českém prostředí dosud neexistují. Umožněním jejich systematické realizace ve vhodných lokalitách může dojít ke zvýšení bezpečnosti provozu, podpoře udržitelné městské mobility a zvýšení kvality života obyvatel měst a obcí. Tato publikace přináší komplexní pohled na problematiku zón setkávání (sdílených prostorů), jejich urbanistický i dopravně-inženýrský kontext. Obsahuje výsledky rozsáhlé rešerše právních norem, technických norem a příkladů dobré praxe ve vybraných evropských zemích, popis situace v Česku i shrnutí zásad navrhování a projektování zón setkávání (sdílených prostorů).
