V polovině 60. let odchází Living Theatre do Evropy, aby uskutečnil rozchod s americkou kulturou a šířil myšlenku anarchistické revoluce. Během pobytu v Evropě vytvoří soubor několik inscenací, které zobrazí téma revoluce pomocí řady nových scénických postupů. Skutečný příspěvek k anarchistické revoluci pak zinscenuje v létě revolučního roku 1968 na Avignonském festivalu, kde uvede premiéru inscenace Paradise NOW a v programu představí i dva starší projekty Mysteries and Smaller Pieces a Antigone. Kniha představuje urbanistické a architektonické osudy historického centra Prahy v období, kdy se měnilo z malebného historického souměstí v ambiciózní velkoměsto. Téma otevírají první romantické zásahy, které městu daly nábřeží a promenády. V poměrně dramatickém protikladu následuje období radikální asanace, která znamenala demolici celých čtvrtí domů a vyvolala neméně radikální reakci ochránců „staré Prahy“. Samostatnou kapitolu představuje doba pozoruhodných meziválečných proměn města v metropoli nového státu, stejně jako temné protektorátní období megalomanských urbanistických plánů. Finále knihy pak tvoří období let 1958–1970, které přineslo nejen návrat modernismu, ale také zásadní diskuse, jakou roli má vlastně historické centrum v organismu moderního města hrát.

Práce proto sleduje nejen zrod a prosazení nových idejí, ale také čím dál silnější vědomí památkové hodnoty města, které v roce 1971 vyvrcholí jeho prohlášením za Pražskou památkovou rezervaci. Bylo-li to možné, dostávají v textu slovo přímo aktéři jednotlivých diskusí a ideových bojů. Jejich prostřednictvím lze nejlépe pochopit nejen dobové postoje a dilemata, ale také hlubokou vnitřní kontinuitu, která se s odstupem let ukazuje jako mnohem významnější, než by se z klipovitého střídání architektonických stylů i politických režimů mohlo na první pohled zdát.
