D'Hancarville. The Complete Collection of Antiquities from the Cabinet of Sir William Hamilton
Antiquarian, archaeologist, vulcanologist, and envoy to the British Embassy in Naples, Sir William Hamilton (1731-1803) was a leading European figure of his time. Though the romance between his wife Lady Emma Hamilton and Horatio Nelson tends to eclipse Sir William's own activities, his work as a scientist and a classicist made major contributions to the study of Pompei, Herculaneum, and Mt. Vesuvius.
As an expert in ancient art, Hamilton also built up an invaluable collection of ancient Greek vases, subsequently sold to the British Museum in London in 1772. Before the pieces were shipped off to England, Hamilton commissioned Pierre-Francois Hugues d'Hancarville, an adventurous connoisseur and art dealer, to document the vases in words and images. The resulting catalog, published in four volumes and known as Les Antiquites d'Hancarville, represents a neoclassical masterpiece. Kniha Umění a emancipace je v českém prostředí prvním uceleným pokusem vyrovnat se s odkazem významného polského intelektuála, jehož myšlenky zůstávají podnětné nejen na poli dějin moderního a současného umění. Piotr Piotrowski (1952—2015) se stal celosvětově uznávaným teoretikem díky své koncepci horizontálních – tedy nehierarchicky pojatých – dějin umění, inspirovaných marxistickou a feministickou tradicí. Předkládaný výbor obsahuje texty z let 1998 až 2013; jde jak o samostatně publikované studie, tak o kapitoly z několika Piotrowského knih. Autor v nich tematizuje mocenské, zejména geopolitické vztahy, v nichž umění vzniká a v nichž se píší i jeho dějiny. Odmítá nekritické přejímání západní perspektivy, ať již ve vztahu k bývalému sovětskému bloku, nebo dalším světovým periferiím a marginalizovaným kulturám. V té souvislosti se věnuje také otázkám postkoloniálních studií a zpochybňuje jejich aplikaci na situaci postkomunistických zemí. Dalším tématem knihy je idea kritického muzea, kterou Piotrowski důsledně zastával i ve svém veřejném působení, kde narážela na požadavky konzervativní politiky. The representation of the nude in art remained for many centuries a victory of fiction over fact. Beautiful, handsome, flawless - its great success was to distance the unclothed body from any uncomfortably explicit taint of sexuality, eroticism or imperfection. In this newly updated study, Frances Borzello contrasts the civilized, sanitized, perfected nude of Kenneth Clark's classic, The Nude: A Study in Ideal Form (1956), with today's depictions: raw, uncomfortable, both disturbing and intriguing. Grittier and more subtle, depicting variously gendered bodies, the new nude asks awkward questions and behaves provocatively. It is a very naked nude, created to deal with the issues and contradictions that surround the body in our time.
Borzello explores the role of the nude in twentieth- and twenty-first-century art, looking at the work of a wide range of international artists creating contemporary nudes. Vivian Maier
A full-career retrospective on the work of Vivian Maier, bringing together a selection of key works from throughout her life and career. When Vivian Maier's archive was discovered in Chicago in 2007, the photography community gained an immense and singular talent. Maier lived in relative obscurity until her death in 2009, but is now the subject of films and books, and recognized as one of the great American photographers of the 20th century. Born in New York in 1926, she worked as a nanny in New York and Chicago for much of her adult life. It was during her years as a nanny that she took many of the photographs that have made her posthumously famous. Maier's incredible body of work consists of more than 150,000 photographic images, Super 8 and 16 mm films, various recordings and a multitude of undeveloped films.
Working primarily as a street photographer, Maier's work has been compared with such luminaries as Helen Levitt, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus and Joel Meyerowitz.
