The untold modern history of the Japanese kimono and its dynamic relationship to Western culture
Japan's engagement with Western clothing, culture, and art in the mid-nineteenth century transformed the traditional kimono and began a cross-cultural sartorial dialogue that continues to this day. This publication explores the kimono's fascinating modern history and its notable influence on Western fashion. Initially signaling the wearer's social position, marital status, age, and wealth, older kimono designs gave way to the demands of modernized and
democratized twentieth-century lifestyles as well as the preferences of the emancipated "new woman." Conversely, inspiration from the kimono's silhouette liberated Western designers such as Paul Poiret and Madeline Vionnet from traditional European tailoring. Juxtaposing never-before-published Japanese textiles from the John C. Weber Collection with Western couture, this book places the kimono on the stage of global fashion history.

Výpravná, bohato ilustrovaná publikácia mapuje vyše tri dekády výtvarnej tvorby a života významného slovenského sochára Jána Ťapáka (nar. 1962).
Kniha nie je koncipovaná ako tradičná akademická monografia, ale ako púť časom, počas ktorej sa zlomky poznania skladajú do celkového obrazu životnej tvorby. Ján Ťapák, absolvent katedry sochárstva na Vysokej škole výtvarných umení v Bratislave, vždy radšej modeluje hmotu do priestoru, akoby ju odoberal z kameňa. Vytváranie sochy z ničoho mu je oveľa bližšie. Jeho bronzové kompozície majú energiu umeleckej myšlienky, ale sú aj lyrickým vyznením intímnych príbehov.
Listovanie v publikácii navodzuje atmosféru príjemných stretnutí v ateliéri Jána Ťapáka, počas ktorých vznikali spomienky a úvahy, keď sa autor, kunsthistorik a publicista Ľudovít Petránsky pozeral do minulosti, aby lepšie spoznal sochára a premeny často nepokojného sveta.

This narrative, richly illustrated publication maps the three decades of the art Slovak sculptor Ján Ťapák (born 1962) has created and celebrates his life.
Instead of a traditional academic monograph, this book was conceived to describe a pilgrimage through time and to piece together fragments of knowledge into an overall picture of his life’s work. Ján Ťapák graduated from the Department of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava and in his professional career he has always expressed a preference for shaping sculpture that occupies a physical space as if it were carved from stone. Sculpting something out of thin air resonates more with him. His bronze compositions have both the energy of artistic self-expression and the lyrical tone of intimate stories.
Leafing through the book evokes the enjoyable atmosphere that was generated when author, art historian and publicist Ľudovít Petránsky met at Ján Ťapák’s studio. As they look back at Ťapák’s career and life, there is an opportunity to get better acquainted with him and the transformations he has undergone in an often-troubled world.

Tělo a archiv
V pořadí třetí titul v edici Symptomatologie. Esej Tělo a archiv Allana Sekuly z roku 1986 je jedním z nejvýznamnějších příspěvků kritické teorie fotografie a moderní vizuální kultury. Zaměřuje se primárně na způsoby využití fotografie pro sociální klasifikaci a kontrolu. Ukazuje, jak se již raná fotografie stala prostředkem k diagnostice sociální patologie v důsledku souběhu několika faktorů jako bylo zvýšené využívání fotografie policií, popularita fyziognomie a frenologie či přijetí teorie pozitivismu. Systematické snahy o regulaci nebezpečných tříd vyvrcholily v 19. století širokým používáním fotografie a vývojem dvou různých archivačních systémů pro identifikaci a regulaci zločinců pomocí fotografie: Bertillona, který svůj systém stavěl na individualitě a Galtona, který vycházel z koncepce sociálního typu. Oba přitom budovali své fotografické archivy na základech rozvíjející se sociální statistiky a Queteletovy koncepce „průměrného člověka“. Na základě analýzy vztahů mezi fotografií, statistikou, archivy, administrativou apod. Sekula dokládá provázanost ceremoniální a represivní funkce fotografie.
Stejně jako u ostatních titulů edice je překlad opatřen doslovem, který představí širší kontext autorova díla, souvislost s ostatními tituly a jeho aktuální relevanci.
