Stavitelé katedrál 6 - Opus francigenum: katedrály remešské církevní provincie
Remešská církevní provincie zahrnovala rozsáhlé území severovýchodní Francie a současné Belgie. Pod Remeš spadala tato biskupství: Amiens, Arras, Beauvais, Cambrai, Châlons-sur-Marne (dnes Châlons-en-Champagne), Laon, Noyon, Senlis, Soissons, Thérouanne a Tournai. Katedrály těchto diecézí mají značný význam pro osudy rané a vrcholné gotiky. Jejich katedrální huti představovaly jakousi laboratoř nápadů a tvůrčích řešení toho, co bylo v Německu ve 13. století označeno jako opus francigenum, což bychom volně přeložili jako francouzské umění. Speciální pozornost je v knize věnována katedrále v Amiensu, jedné z největších gotických staveb ve Francii, a Matyášovi z Arrasu, prvnímu stavitele katedrály sv. Víta, Václava a Vojtěcha na Pražském hradě.
Texty historika umění Petra Kováče doplňují studie nejvýznamnějších znalců evropského umění 12. a 13. století z České republiky, Francie, Německa a USA. Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945) was born in the Prussian city of Königsberg (now Kaliningrad, Russia). Using a combination of algorithm, chance and deliberation, a core database of 23 type systems and 198 individual fonts is interpolated to generate millions of hybrid forms in which every dot, line, space and letter is designed to correspond and collaborate in close harmony. The showcased examples, selected for their distinctively abstract and striking qualities, are printed in three vibrant neon inks and metallic black.
The result, far more than a mere catalogue of typefaces, demonstrates the power of excavating design problems at their deepest roots, allowing abundant and diverse outcomes to proliferate spontaneously.
Casa Susanna

In the 1950s and '60s, an underground network of transgender women, gender nonconforming people, and men who dressed as women found refuge at a modest house in the Catskills, New York. Known as Casa Susanna, the house provided a safe place to express their true selves and live for a few days as they had always dreamed?dressed as and living as women without fear of being incarcerated or institutionalized for their self-expression.
Casa Susanna opens up that now-lost world. The photographs?mostly discovered by chance in a New York flea market in 2004?chronicle the experiences of these women in states of relaxation, experimentation, connection, and joy. All of this was made possible by Susanna Valenti who?on her own journey toward womanhood?created Casa Susanna, a protected space where others could do the same. Supplementing the images, excerpts from the magazine Transvestia record a different kind of space where those who had been outcast by a rigidly binary society could connect.
The people who came to Casa Susanna found a space where they could explore and celebrate their own and each other’s femininity, as they could not elsewhere. Their creations are also a reminder that there were, and still are, many ways to explore the boundaries of gender.

Matthew Wong - Vincent van Gogh
A beautifully illustrated exploration of the artistic and personal connections between Matthew Wong (1984-2019) and Vincent van Gogh.
Shortly before his early death, the Canadian artist Matthew Wong (1984-2019) emerged as a phenomenon. He started drawing and painting in 2011, at the age of 27, and within the space of just a few years had developed a highly personal style, using intense colours to paint imaginative landscapes.
Wong's expressively lyrical works were inspired by both traditional Chinese painting and Western art. He was especially influenced by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), not only in terms of his painting style and choice of motifs, but also in some aspects of his life. Both artists were self-taught, acquiring their drawing and painting skills without tuition, and both faced mental health issues. Wong saw his own life reflected in that of Van Gogh, and once said: 'I see myself in him. The impossibility of belonging in this world.'
Published to accompany the exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, this book explores the artistic and personal connection between the two artists, bringing around 45 paintings and drawings by Wong into dialogue with a group of Van Gogh masterpieces. Kenny Schachter, who knew Matthew Wong, contributes a personal introduction, which is followed by essays exploring the artists' biographical and artistic kinship.

Drapérii máme spojenou zejména s výtvarným uměním. Nařasená, zvlněná nebo vyskládaná látka na nejrůznějších postavách, stolech nebo jen tak ledabyle pohozená na sofa. Ale pozor, i zmuchlaná peřina na rozestlané posteli nese znamení drapérie. Historii a současnost tohoto kompozičně výtvarného prvku nám v širokém kulturním a civilizačním kontextu představí právě tato kniha.
Seznámíme se se symbolickou rolí drapérie, tedy k čemu všemu sloužila a jakou funkci v historii sehrála. Autor drapérii nechápe jen jako výtvarný prvek, je to také způsob, jímž se tělesnost otevírá našemu vnímání. Proto je také jedna z kapitol věnována erotice v souvislosti s drapérií. Autor ukazuje různé fasety, jimiž se drapérie podrobuje našemu vnímání. Tematizuje například ticho („řečí drapérie je ticho“), tělesnost, pohyb, rytmus, ale také sociální dimenzi drapérie (kapitola Oděv jako sociální kůže). Věnuje se i vztahu zátiší a drapérie („Zátiší je ontologická tišina, z jejíhož ticha se ozývá echo bytí.“).
Kniha čtenáře provede historickými obdobími, tedy antikou, románským stylem, gotikou, renesancí, barokem, rokokem, neoklasicismem, romantismem, symbolismem, modernou a současností. Knihu lze s velkou mírou zjednodušení chápat jako soubor tří vrstev: 1. Nesoustavné dějiny lidské tělesnosti ve výtvarném umění v souvislosti s drapérií. 2. Průvodce po konkrétních dílech, v nichž drapérie hraje důležitou roli. 3. Drapérie jako symbol sepětí přírody a kultury. Nejde však o tři oddělené oddíly či kapitoly, neboť tyto tři roviny se vzájemně prolínají.

Nakladatelství Torst vydává jako svou 700. publikaci fotografickou knihu Bohdana Holomíčka Album 1958–1977, která přináší na 176 stranách 238 snímků z prvního dvacetiletí jeho tvorby. Jedná se o druhou z řady knih s jednotícím názvem Album, která mapuje jeho fotografické dílo. První z nich, Album Václav, vyšla v roce 2016 a zachycuje Václava Havla od roku 1974 až do smrti v kruhu nejbližších přátel, se spisovateli, divadelníky, s manželkou Olgou, ale i s českými a světovými politiky. Fotografie Bohdana Holomíčka jsou již po více než šedesát let intimní kronikou životů mnoha lidí, které potkal. Vyprávějí o tom, že každý člověk je jedinečný a že lidský život má smysl. Jeho snímky přinášejí do života lidí radost, touhu prožívat každý okamžik naplno, vidět krásu a inspiraci ve všední každodennosti. O tom svědčí i jeho strhující osobnost. Teoretička umění Hana Buddeus ho jednou oprávněně nazvala „apoštolem lásky“. Historička fotografie Anna Fárová ho charakterizovala jako „fotografa přátelských setkání, zachycujícího pozitivní situace, okamžiky milosti, záblesky lásky za magického přispění světla“. Historik fotografie Antonín Dufek napsal, že „jeho fotografie jsou často přirovnávány k deníku, ale jak čas běží, stále víc se ukazuje, že je to spíš památník a kronika.
