The Definitive Jacques Tati

Oscar-winning French director/performer Jacques Tati (1907-1982) was a fiercely innovative and original filmmaker who found inspiration in the observation of life around him. By creating and playing unassuming characters thrown into the bustle of society-the hapless postman Francois and the maladroit Monsieur Hulot-Tati brilliantly exposed the ways in which class distinctions, social mores, architecture, and technology affect the basic ways that humans relate to one another. Unlike Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, to whom he has frequently been compared, Tati took the everyday and recreated it, layered organically with visual and audio gags, for the audience to actively observe. His early work as a mime taught him how to generate laughter without words; in his films he used gestures, facial expressions, costumes, props, sets, sounds, music-everything but dialogue-to do the talking. Tati's films are truly universal and accessible to anyone, anywhere, who can appreciate the comedy of modern life. Tati once said "I want the film to begin when you leave the theater." His greatest achievement was to show us that together, as the whole of humanity, we are characters starring in the greatest spectacle of all: life itself. In 2000, Macha Makeieff and Jerome Deschamps founded Les Films de Mon Oncle with the late Sophie Tatisheff, daughter of Tati, to preserve and promote Tati's archives and legacy. This definitive exploration of Tati's life and work, made possible by the complete and unprecedented access to the archives that they provided TASCHEN, features hundreds of photographs and film stills, the complete screenplays, interviews, original essays, and a vast selection of documents, letters, sketches, and notes spanning five volumes.Designed by M/M (Paris), the set includes: Volume I, 'Tati Films': stills from all six feature films Volume II, 'Tati Writes': the complete screenplays, plus those of the unmade films The Illusionist and Confusion, illustrated by pages from Tati's original drafts Volume III, 'Tati Works': a comprehensive survey of his life and work Volume IV, 'Tati Explores': essays on important themes in his films Volume V, 'Tati Speaks': quotations, interviews, and a previously unpublished memoir by Tati Also available in a Collector's Edition limited to 112 copies

Leave Your Mark

Although handwriting is one of mankind's greatest cultural achievements, written communication today means mostly typing into computers and mobile devices. However, scientists stress that the brain benefits from writing by hand. The author, an acclaimed calligrapher and teacher of penmanship, addresses herself to all those who don't even use pen and paper for their shopping list, but would like to try it (again). Based on scientifically proven methods for cognitive activities, this title discovers and promotes the creative potential of handwriting - and to put it into practice right away on the pages of the book. Well-founded and very colorful, inspiring and yet structured: at the end there is the joy of expressing oneself by means of a personal mark, in a form that is even pleasant to look at. Furthermore, there is also the understanding that handwriting is much more than just the graphic transcription of language, going to the origin of the need for expression.

With well thought-out planning, cleverly organized floor plans and intelligent, compact concepts, a lot of space can be created in a small area. By now, in addition to do-it-yourself protagonists, established architects and hip design studios have taken on the interesting task of developing sophisticated solutions for small homes and tiny houses. Wood Book/Hough, Gold Edition

Culled and assembled by Romeyn Beck Hough between 1888 and 1913 in what still remains a stunning and unparalleled achievement, American Woods-originally published in 14 volumes, with actual specimens mounted on card stock-is a work of breathtaking beauty that has set the standard for the study of trees and wood. The Woodbook reproduces, in painstaking facsimile, all of the specimen pages from the original volumes; for this purpose, TASCHEN obtained an extremely rare original set of volumes in very good condition, with minimal damage to the wood cuts. Arranged in alphabetical order, each tree is broken down into three different cross-section cuts of wood (radial, horizontal, and tangential), demonstrating the particular characteristics of the grain and the wealth of colors and textures to be found among the many different wood types. Also included in this special edition are lithographs by Charles Sprague Sargent of the leaves and nuts of most trees, as well as texts explaining each tree's geographical origins and physical characteristics.

Basquiat by Himself

Jean-Michel Basquiat's self-portraits are regarded as being among the most important of his radical creative works. In addition to some 50 specific portraits of himself, we can also see his series of likenesses of African-American men as concealed reproductions of the artist. Not least because Basquiat, who was affected himself by everyday racism, identified with his heroes, saints and martyrs as he portrayed them. Thus his major topics from identity, discrimination and prejudice to capitalism, the market and oppression are all to be found in these key works.

"História štadióna Spartaka Trnava. Najskôr tam bolo nič. Potom plocha, kde sa začínalo so všetkým možným. Atletikou, pribudla cyklistika, pozemný hokej a hádzaná chlapov. V časti "OVÁL" nesmú chýbať fotky z najhistorickejšieho momentu. Bol to zápas s Ajaxom. Potom "PLECHÁČ", jeho nezanedbateľné miesto v Trnave s jeho radosťami i sklamaniami. No a na koniec, jeho koniec. Búranie a stavba novej - nádhernej "CITY ARENY". Jej otvorenie a nádherné zápasy, ktorých vyvrcholením bol znovu - titul. Plné tribúny, fanúšikovia, ale hlavne "kotelníci a ultrasáci" s ich neopakovateľnými a jedinečnými choreami. Proste. Julia Watson, Lo-TEK, Design by Radical Indigenism

In an era of high-tech and climate extremes, we are drowning in information while starving for wisdom. Enter Lo—TEK, a design movement rebuilding indigenous philosophy and vernacular architecture to generate sustainable, resilient infrastructure. Traveling from Peru to the Philippines, Tanzania to Iran, this book explores millennia-old human ingenuity on how to live in symbiosis with nature. Three hundred years ago, intellectuals of the European Enlightenment constructed a mythology of technology. Influenced by a confluence of humanism, colonialism, and racism, this mythology ignored local wisdom and indigenous innovation, deeming it primitive. Today, we have slowly come to realize that the legacy of this mythology is haunting us. Designers understand the urgency of reducing humanity’s negative environmental impact, yet perpetuate the same mythology of technology that relies on exploiting nature. Responding to climate change by building hard infrastructures and favoring high-tech homogenous design, we are ignoring millennia old knowledge of how to live in symbiosis with nature. Without implementing soft systems that use biodiversity as a building block, designs remains inherently unsustainable. Lo—TEK, derived from Traditional Ecological Knowledge, is a cumulative body of multigenerational knowledge, practices, and beliefs, countering the idea that indigenous innovation is primitive and exists isolated from technology. It is sophisticated and designed to sustainably work with complex ecosystems. With a foreword by renowned anthropologist Wade Davis and four chapters spanning Mountains, Forests, Deserts, and Wetlands, this book explores thousands of years of human wisdom and ingenuity from places like Peru, the Philippines, Tanzania, Kenya, Iran, Iraq, India, and Indonesia. We rediscover an ancient mythology in a contemporary context, radicalizing the spirit of human nature. The editor and author Academic and author Julia Watson is the Principal and Founder of Julia Watson Studio, an experiential, landscape, and urban design studio, as well as a Director and Co-Founder of ‘A Future Studio’, a collective of conscious designers with an ethos towards global ecological change. She teaches Urban Design at Harvard and Columbia University. After graduating from Harvard with the highest award for her work on conservation and spiritual landscapes, she has been published in Nakhara Journal, Water Urbanisms East, World Heritage Sites and Living Culture of Indonesia, and co-authored the Spiritual Guide to Bali’s UNESCO World Heritage with Dr. J. Stephen Lansing. The designers Piera Wolf and Claudine Eriksson are W—E studio, a multidisciplinary creative studio based in Zürich and New York that strives to bridge time and space between these constantly evolving and contrasting cities. Piera and Claudine have individually been recognized by publications and organizations including The New York Times, Dazed Digital, Rolling Stone, Slanted, and many more. Talks, teaching, and workshop engagements include the New York School of Visual Arts, HTW Berlin, Google Creative Lab, and the Zürich University of the Arts.

Peter Lindbergh. Dior

70 years of DIOR history set against the bustle of Times Square: this was Peter Lindbergh’s concept, extraordinary both in scope and dimension, for which the House allowed an unprecedented number of its most iconic garments to travel across the Atlantic. In this two-volume compendium, the legendary photographer’s final book project, discover the shoot in never-before-published images, as well as a tribute to an electrifying partnership between two pillars of fashion. Peter Lindbergh photographed DIOR’s most exceptional muses, Marion Cotillard and Charlize Theron among them, and signed campaigns for Lady Dior and J'Adore with his inimitable style. Throughout his career, the photographer was one of the house’s closest collaborators. This final book was an original cocreation that was close to the artist’s heart—and to ours. Seventy years of DIOR history projected against the effervescence of Times Square, New York: this was the concept behind Lindbergh’s project, extraordinary both in scope and dimension, for which DIOR, in an unusual move, allowed an unprecedented number of priceless garments to be taken from its vaults in Paris and shipped across the Atlantic. The result is electric. Amid the frenzy of Times Square, Alek Wek glows in the immaculate 1947 Bar suit, the storied ensemble that launched the House of DIOR. In snatches of street scenes, models Saskia de Brauw, Karen Elson, and Amber Valletta flit through crowds and scaffolding, are reflected in building façades, and draped in haute couture, from pieces hand-sewn by Christian Dior to more recent designs by Maria Grazia Chiuri. Lindbergh’s trademark monochrome and color photographs masterfully highlight the intricacies, silhouettes, and textures of each garment. Lindbergh himself is present in every aspect of this two-volume publication designed by his long-time collaborator and friend Juan Gatti. Volume one features 165 never-before-published images from the shoot, including an introduction by Martin Harrison. Volume two pays homage to Lindbergh’s profound relationship with the Parisian House by curating more than 100 of his photographs of DIOR creations, from haute couture to ready-to-wear, men’s and women’s, originally published in some of the world’s most prestigious magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. A breathtaking tribute to two pillars of fashion and photography and their timeless collaborations. The photographer Peter Lindbergh (1944–2019) was a master of his craft who has made his mark in the halls of photography history, with such credits as shooting the first American Vogue cover under Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, bringing together for the first time a group of young women who would become the ’90s supermodels, and numerous exhibitions at renowned institutions including Victoria & Albert Museum in London and Centre Pompidou in Paris, as well as in solo exhibitions at Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum for Contemporary Art, Berlin, Bunkamura Museum of Art, Tokyo, and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. The contributing author Martin Harrison is a historian of art and photography and an exhibition curator. He worked with Linda McCartney on Roadworks (1996), Light from Within (2001), and her exhibitions at the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television in Bradford and the International Center of Photography in New York. He has published widely on photography and, most recently, on the paintings of Francis Bacon.

Photo Icons

Photographs have a strange and powerful way of shaping the way we see the world. The most successful images enter our collective consciousness, defining eras, making history, or simply touching something so fundamentally human and universal that they have become resonant icons all over the globe. To explore this unique influence, Photo Icons puts some of the most important photographic landmarks under the microscope. From some of the earliest photography, such as Nicephore Niepce's 1827 eight-hour-exposure rooftop picture and Louis Daguerre's famous 1838 street scene, through to Martin Parr, this is as much a history of the medium as a case-by-case analysis of its social, historical, and artistic impact. We take in experimental Surrealist shots of the 1920s and the gritty photorealism of the 1930s, including Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mother. We witness the power-makers (Che Guevara) and the heartbreakers (Marilyn Monroe) as well as the great gamut of human emotions and experiences to which photography bears such vivid witness: from the euphoric Kiss in Front of City Hall (1950) by Doisneau to the horror of Nick Ut's Napalm Against Civilians showing nine-year-old Phan Thi Kim Phuc running naked toward the camera from South Vietnamese napalm.

Henri Cartier-Bresson - China 1948-1949, 1958

In December 1948, Henri Cartier-Bresson travelled to China at the request of Life magazine. He stayed for ten months and captured some of the most spectacular moments in China's history: he photographed Beijing in 'the last days of the Kuomintang', and then headed back to Shanghai, where he recorded the new regime's takeover. Moreover, in 1958, Henri Cartier-Bresson was one of the first Western photographers to go back to China to explore the changes that had occurred over the preceding decade. The 'picture stories' he sent to Magnum and Life on a regular basis played a key role in Westerners' understanding of Chinese political events. Many of these images are among the most significant photographs in Cartier-Bresson's oeuvre; his empathy with the populace and sense of responsibility as a witness making them an important part of his legacy. Henri Cartier-Bresson in China allows these photographs to be re-examined along with all of the documents that were preserved: the photographer's captions and comments, contact sheets and abundant correspondence, as well as the published versions that appeared in both American and European magazines. A welcome addition to any photography lover's bookshelf, this is an exciting new volume on one of the 20th century's most important photographers.

1950s in Vogue

One of only seven editors-in-chief in American Vogue's history, Jessica Daves has remained one of fashion's most enigmatic figures-until now. Diana Vreeland's direct predecessor in the role, it is Daves who first catapulted the magazine into modernity. A testament to a changing America on every level, Daves's Vogue was the first to embrace a 'high/low' blend of fashion in its pages and also introduced world-renowned artists, literary greats, and cultural icons into every issue, offering the reader a complete vision of how fashion, interiors, art, architecture, entertaining, literature, and culture were all connected and all contributed to refining and defining personal style. Profiling icons of American style from John and Jackie Kennedy to Charles and Ray Eames, Daves's Vogue also featured the couture creations of Dior, Chanel, Givenchy, and Balenciaga. Organized in multifaceted, thematic chapters, 1950s in Vogue features carefully curated photographs, illustrations and page spreads from the Vogue archives (with both iconic and less-familiar images from photographers including William Klein, Irving Penn, Karen Radkai and Erwin Blumenfeld), as well as reproductions of fascinating archival materials and correspondence.

Bill Cunningham - On the Street

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - The first published collection of photographs by the icon of street style, bringing together favorites published in The New York Times alongside never-before-seen work across five decades. "A dazzling kaleidoscope from the gaze of an artist who saw beauty at every turn."--André Leon Talley Bill Cunningham's photography captured the evolution of style, of trends, and of the everyday, both in New York City and in Paris. But his work also shows that street style is not only about fashion; it's about the people and the changing culture. These photographs--many never before seen, others having originally appeared in The New York Times and elsewhere--move from decade to decade, beginning in the 1970s and continuing until Cunningham's death in 2016. Here you'll find Cunningham's distinctive chronicling of the 1980s transit strike, the rise of 1990s casual Fridays, the sadness that fell over the city following 9/11, Inauguration Day 2009, the onset of selfies, and many other significant moments. This enduring portfolio is enriched by essays that provide a revealing portrait of Cunningham and a few of his many fascinations and influences, contributed by Cathy Horyn, Tiina Loite, Vanessa Friedman, Ruth La Ferla, Guy Trebay, Penelope Green, Jacob Bernstein, and a much favored subject, Anna Wintour. More than anything, On the Street is a timeless representation of Cunningham's commitment to capturing the here and now. "An absolute delight."--People
