Bauhaus
The aesthetic of our contemporary environment, including everything from housing developments to furniture and websites, is partly the result of a school of art and design founded in Germany in 1919, the Bauhaus. While in operation for only fourteen years before being shut down by the Nazis in 1933, the school left an indelible mark on design as well as the practice of art education throughout the world. Throughout her 20-year career, Neri Oxman has invented not only new ideas for materials, buildings and construction processes, but also new frameworks for interdisciplinary--and interspecies--collaborations. She coined the term "material ecology" to describe her process of producing techniques and objects informed by the structural, systemic and aesthetic wisdom of nature, from the shells of crustaceans to the flow of human breathing. Groundbreaking for its solid technological and scientific basis, its rigorous and daring experimentation, its visionary philosophy and its unquestionable attention to formal elegance, Oxman's work operates at the intersection of biology, engineering, architecture and artistic design, material science and computer science. This book--designed by Irma Boom and published to accompany a midcareer retrospective of Oxman's work--highlights the interdisciplinary nature of the designer's practice. It demonstrates how Oxman's contributions allow us to question and redefine the idea of modernism--a concept in constant evolution--and of organic design. Israeli American architect, designer and inventor Neri Oxman (born 1976) is professor of media arts and sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab. Na první pohled se pojem umění zdá být víceméně jasný. Problém ovšem nastává v okamžiku, kdy ho máme vysvětlit a popsat někomu dalšímu. Mnozí z nás pak nejspíš dospějí k závěru, že umění jako abstraktní entituči lidskou činnost vyčerpávajícím způsobem definovat nelze. Tato „nedokonalost“ lidského poznání znesnadňuje již samotné pátrání po původu, příčinách i samotném jeho smyslu nejen v dávné minulosti. Život na planetě Zemi se po miliardy let vyvíjel pod taktovkou přírodních zákonů. Před dvěma či třemi sty tisíci lety se však přihodilo něco zvláštního, co tato planeta do té doby nezaznamenala. Objevil se člověk Homo sapiens, jehož mysl byla obdařena dosud nepoznanou neurologickou kvalitou, zcela novým typem vědomí, které charakterizuje nebývalá inteligence a také naprosto nový fenomén, totiž lidská kultura a její výsostný produkt umění. Od tohoto okamžiku se život na Zemi začal vyvíjet ve zcela nových souvislostech, kterým nejsme schopni plně porozumět ani dnes. Naprostá většina vypravěčů umění začíná líčit jeho příběh v mladším paleolitu, v temnotě franko-kantabrijských jeskyní, či pod skalními převisy v Austrálii.
