Clothes define people. A person's attire, whether it's a sari, kimono, or business suit, is an essential code to his or her culture, class, personality, even their faith. Founded in 1978, the Kyoto Costume Institute recognizes the importance of understanding clothes from sociological, historical, and artistic perspectives. Évekig voltunk úton, bekopogtunk házakhoz, bejártuk a skanzeneket, bekéredzkedtünk udvarokba, megpihentünk csűrökben, önfeledten doboltuk a ritmust a táncházakban és szégyenlősen táncra perdültünk magunk is, ha éppen nem figyelt senki ránk egy-egy esti mulatságon. Nemcsak a tárgyi emlékek hihetetlenül gazdag világával ismerkedtünk: néztük az arcokat, a mozdulatokat, lejegyeztük a jellemző ételek receptjeit. Közben egyre telhetetlenebbek lettünk. Hiába hordtuk haza a képeket szőttesekről, faragásokról, kerámiákról, ahogy haladtunk előre az időben újra meg újra azt gondoltuk: nincs elég megörökített csipke, mézeskalács vagy kályhacsempe a birtokunkban. Így aztán mindegyik utolsó út után következett még egy utolsó utáni utolsó, mert népművészetünk felmérhetetlenül gazdag. Befejezni lehetetlen volt a gyűjtőmunkát, csak abbahagyni lehetett.
