Publikace dokumentuje tři mezinárodní přehlídky současného umění, které Karel Císař připravil za posledních zhruba deset let. Výstava Vzpomínky na budoucnost (2009) byla věnována aktuálnosti moderního umění v soudobém umění, Obrazy a předobrazy (2013) vztahovaly díla současných západoevropských umělců k ukázkám středoevropského meziválečného výstavnictví, funkcionalistické sklářské tvorby či surrealistické typografie a výstava Síť, gradient, opilecký krok (2017) představila dva americké umělce vycházející z aplikované matematiky a politické ekonomie. Vzhledem k tomu, že tyto výstavy zároveň naznačovaly obecnější tendence vývoje umění ve sledovaném období, publikace by rovněž měla přispět k poznání dějin současného umění a k problematice metodologie jejich zkoumání. Císařovy texty jsou doprovozeny překladovými statěmi předních teoretiků současného umění (Juliane Rebentischové, André Rottmanna, Lars Bang Larsena a Yve-Alain Boise), které vyšly v době konání výstav, námětově se dotýkají prezentovaných prací a vycházejí z různých metodologických přístupů (kritické teorie, post-strukturalismu, psychoanalýzy ad.).
