Magyar katolikus templomok
"Időről időre különösen fontos örökségünk számbavétele és jelentőségének fölismerése, nem csupán nemzeti identitásunk szempontjából, hanem mert ezekkel az értékekkel és tapasztalatokkal járulhatunk hozzá az európai közösség gyarapodásához. Nem lehet feladatunk a teljes magyar építészeti örökség áttekintése, de talán a bemutatott példák is érzékeltetik annak gazdagságát és értékeit.
A művészeti stílusok sokáig szorosan összefonódtak a liturgikus szokásokkal és a vallási mozgalmakkal, ezért természetes, hogy a nyugati templomok alaprajzi típusai és liturgikus térrendezése hamar megjelentek hazánkban is.
Szent István II. Törvénykönyve elrendelte, hogy tíz falu közösen építsen egy templomot. Az egyes szerzetesrendek sajátos építészeti megoldásokat hoztak magukkal. A kora középkorban bizánci, itáliai és német hatás érvényesült épületeinken. A 11. század építkezéseit az alaprajzok sokoldalúsága jellemzi.
A kezdeti sokféleség a 11. század végétől kezdve helyet adott egy háromhajós, háromapszisos, bazilikális alaprajzú típusnak, melyet hagyományosan a magyar romanika jellegzetességének tekintenek. Ez a típus jellemezte a legtöbb nemzetiségi monostort és számos egyéb kolostort, káptalantemplomot és székesegyházat is. Királyaink a 11. században vették át a Közép-Európában már korábban elterjedt körtemplom típusát is (pl. Esztergom).
A harmadik típusba tartoznak azok a négykaréjos, centrális alaprajzú templomok, amelyeknek eredete tisztázatlan (pl. jáki Szent Jakab-kápolna). A romanika falusi templomainak elterjedtebb (nem kör alakú) típusát az épületrészek világos, ritmikus elkülönülése jellemzi: az általában egyhajós templomok tornya után következik hosszúkás hajójuk, majd alacsonyabb szentélyük.
A gótika hatása a 13. századtól érvényesül. A szentélyeket ekkor sokszögűvé építik át, és a koldulórendek elterjesztik a csarnoktemplom típusát, ahol a bazilikális típussal ellentétben a főhajó és a mellékhajók egyforma magasságúak.
Hazánkban már igen korán, az 1470-es években elterjedt a reneszánsz építészet, évtizedekkel megelőzve Nyugat-Európát (pl. esztergomi Bakócz-kápolna). Az új stílus hamarosan a királyi központokon kívül is jelentkezik, és lassan átalakul népies magyar művészetté. Ezt a gyors és ragyogó fejlődést töri derékba a török hódítás.
A 17. században új építészeti stílusok is megjelennek. A barokk építészetet hazánkban is elsősorban a jezsuita rend terjeszti. Templomaik hasonló alaprajzi vonásokat mutatnak, mivel a szigorúan hierarchikus rend építészeti terveit a római rendfőnöknek kellett jóváhagynia. Közvetítésükkel terjedt el az egy hajóból nyíló mellékkápolnákkal és egy szentéllyel rendelkező alaprajzi típus.
A Mária Terézia által az 1770-es években újonnan alapított egyházmegyék székesegyházain már gyakrabban érvényesül a klasszicizmus hatása.
A modern kor hajnalán a magyar építészet hirtelen és erőteljes virágzásának lehetünk tanúi: a népművészet által ihletett szecessziós építészeink európai mércével mérve is különleges és kiváló épületeket alkottak (pl. zebegényi templom)." (Részlet az Előszóból)
