Annie Leibovitz - Whoopi Goldberg Collector’s Edition
When Benedikt Taschen asked the most important portrait photographer working today to collect her pictures in a SUMO-sized book, she was intrigued and challenged. The project took several years to develop and proved to be revelatory. Annie Leibovitz drew from over 40 years of work, starting with the viscerally intimate reportage she created for Rolling Stone magazine in the 1970s and extending through the more stylized portraiture of her work for Vanity Fair and Vogue. Celebrated images such as John Lennon and Yoko Ono entwined in a last embrace are printed alongside portraits that have rarely, and sometimes never before, been seen. Annie Leibovitz was able to present some of her famous group portraits in a format that proves that she is the master of the genre. Her pictures are at once intimate and iconic, wide-ranging stylistically and also uniquely hers. Annie Leibovitz is often imitated, particularly by younger photographers, but her work is somehow immediately recognizable.
The bookends of the Leibovitz collection are the black-and-white photograph of Richard Nixon's helicopter lifting off from the White House lawn after he resigned as president in 1974 and the formal color portrait of Queen Elizabeth II taken in a drawing room of Buckingham Palace in 2007. In between are portraits that make up a family album of our time: actors, dancers, comedians, musicians, artists, writers, performance artists, journalists, athletes, businesspeople. Performance and power are recurring themes. A supplementary book contains essays by Annie Leibovitz, Graydon Carter, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Paul Roth and short texts describing the subjects of each of the over 250 photographs.

Japanese Dream
Well-traveled photographer and war correspondent Felice Beato (1832–1909) reached the Japanese port city of Yokohama in July 1863 and spent more than twenty years there. He captured unique portraits of geishas in splendid kimonos, samurai, sumo wrestlers, and scenes of everyday life or classic Japanese landscapes. Beato’s photographs deeply influenced the style of the Yokohama School, not so his fellow Japanese enthusiasts and contemporaries Charles Wirgman, Raimund Freiherr Stillfried von Rathenitz, and Adolfo Farsari. Characteristic of Beato’s photographs—which in the early days were exposed on albumin plates—is their careful composition, occasionally recalling woodcuts by master artists Hiroshige or Hokusai. However, the Anglo-Italian photographer and his fellow artists were pioneers in hand-colored photography: their vivid impressions provide a view of traditional Japanese society of the waning Edo period, and for a long time they shaped the European notion of the exotic, distant Asian country.

Sochy do barokní niky
Soubor sochařských povídek. Malá čítanka současného českého sochařství. Záznam dlouhodobé akce, v jejímž rámci pětatřicet sochařů umístilo do prázdné niky svůj výtvor. Všemi těmito přídomky lze charakterizovat knihu Václava Fialy Sochy do barokní niky. Barokní nika je prostor určený výlučně pro sochu, snad každý z těchto výklenků kdysi svou sochu opravdu nesl. Dnes je situace jiná, na mnoha místech v celé zemi zůstaly niky prázdné. Nejinak je tomu v Klatovech. Zdejší sochař a aktivista Václav Fiala se to rozhodl změnit. K sobě „do gubernie,“ jak s oblibou říká, začal před sedmi lety zvát sochaře – i s jejich sochami. Akce trvala až do loňska. Dvě barokní niky na schodišti někdejší slavné jezuitské koleje svým výtvorem za tu dobu zaplnilo pětatřicet umělců. Byla mezi nimi jména slavná (Kurt Gebauer, Olbram Zoubek…) i lokální. Závěr akce symbolicky patřil nezaměstnanému Martinu Šárovi, který zde udělal svou úplně první sochu a legendě evropského formátu Janu Koblasovi. Ukázalo se, že spojení barokní architektury a moderní sochy dokáže jiskřit. Klíč k vývěru pozvaných autorů nabízí Fiala v opozici vůči citátu šéfa Rudolfina Petra Nedomy: „S výtvarníky si netykám, do hospod s nimi nechodím, ateliéry nenavštěvuji.“ To proto, aby jeho kurátorský výběr nebyl ovlivněn osobními vztahy. Fiala zvolil zcela opačný přístup: „Osobní kontakt považuji za zásadní, osobní vztah za žádoucí a jeden z důvodů, proč toho či onoho umělce do Klatov zvu, je vidina společného posezení v hospodě. A tykám si se všemi.“ V Klatovech tak nebyl (a ani nemohl být) prezentován objektivizující soud nad českým (a bavorským) sochařstvím, ale okouzlená subjektivní sonda do oboru. Že se stane sochařem, se Fiala rozhodl téměř ve svých čtyřiceti letech – a opravdu se jím stal, dnes už renomovaným. Po přečtení jeho Soch do barokní niky lze konstatovat, že se stejně dobře mohl stát i spisovatelem. Pětatřicet příběhů představuje jednotlivé sochaře v příbězích – v příbězích jejich životů a tvorby, přípravy klatovské výstavy i v příbězích jejich přátelství s Fialovou. Každý z autorů je v první části knihy představen jakýmsi encyklopedickým heslem a několika snímky, v esejích v závěru publikace pak autor své přátele modeluje – nikoliv pomocí úderů sochařského kladiva, ale úhozů do klávesnice počítače. Fiala-sochař je robustní a hmotný, pracuje se dřevem, kamenem a železem. Jeho texty o sochách a sochařích pak tuto tíhu ve šťastné rovnováze vyvažují a odlehčují. Kniha tak představuje podobnou jednotu v různosti jako samotná akce sázející na moderní umění zasazené do interiéru barokní stavby. Fiala-publicista klade důraz na detail, ví, že v drobném příběhu se může zrcadlit celek zřetelněji, než v hodnotících soudech. V neposlední řadě jsou pak jeho texty odpíchnuté a vtipné, s přesnou mírou sebeironie. Díky tomu zvládl i úkol nejtěžší: představit sám sebe (neboť také on byl jedním z vystavujících umělců). Barokní niky v klatovské knihovně jsou dnes zase prázdné. „Doufal jsem, že se objeví nějaký pokračovatel, ale neobjevil,“ říká Václav Fiala. Jeho vlastním nákladem vydaná a vlastní rukou graficky upravená kniha tak výklenky zaplňuje „alespoň“ vzpomínkou, chcete-li ideou. Nezůstane přitom jen u ní: ve středověké věži zvané Galerie F vzniká i hmotná připomínka akce. „Bude lidu plebejskému připomínat, jací umělci vážili cestu do Klatov,“ uzavírá Fiala.

Heideggerova chata
Adam Sharr je britský architekt s řadou realizací po celé Evropě, profesor architektury na Newcastle University a autor knih Heidegger for Architects a Heideggerova chata. Těžištěm knihy je chata jako ohnisko Heideggerova života a díla, respektive otázka, zda a nakolik skutečně takovou váhu měla. Chata v Todtnaubergu je na jedné straně „hlavním hrdinou“ knihy, na druhou stranu je referentem, k němuž se vztahují další témata od obecných otázek týkajících se architektury přes rozbory Heideggerova vztahu k bydlení v jeho dvou konkrétních (venkovské a městské) podobách až po vztah této slavné horské komorní stavby k zásadním Heideggerovým textům o „stavění a bydlení“. Heideggerova chata rovněž obsahuje první český překlad slavné básně Paula Celana Todtnauberg ve vynikajícím básnickém převodu Radka Malého. Todtnauberg navštívila v průběhu desetiletí řada prominentních osobností, například Edmund Husserl, Karl Jaspers, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Karl Löwith, Jean Beaufret, Ernst Tugendhat či Herbert Marcuse a celá řada dalších. Nedílnou součástí knihy jsou fotografie od Digne Meller-Marcovicz a dalších autorů. Sharrův text usiluje v podrobných popisech o co největší autenticitu vnímání této kulturně-historicky výjimečné stavby.
