Svět klavíru není vždy černobílý
Publikace je součástí připravované populárně naučné ediční řady, která se bude věnovat významným osobnostem a interpretům různých žánrů českého klasického hudebního umění.
Posláním knihy je zprostředkovat široké pianistické veřejnosti pohled předních 10 osobností českého klavíru na různé aspekty současné klavírní hry, její interpretace, pedagogické práce, umělecké tvorby, klavírní školy atd.
Kniha je vytvořena na základě rozhovorů a korespondenčních odpovědí interpretů. Text sestává jak z připravené struktury otázek a odpovědí k daným tématům, která budou předkládána jednotlivým interpretům, tak i volných myšlenek, úvah, událostí či problematice, kterou autor považuje za aktuální a jemu blízkou. Text je doplněn barevnými fotografiemi.

Publikace formou fotografické dokumentace a podrobného komentáře zpřístupňuje nejvýznamnější ukázky funkcionalistické typografie ze soukromé sbírky pedagoga UMPRUM Karla Císaře. Autor tím navazuje na podobně koncipované předešlé monografie Zdeňka Primuse či Johna Vloemanse. Oproti nim se však soustřeďuje výhradně na funkcionalistickou typografii přelomu dvacátých a třicátých let 20. století, od slavného Rossmannova sborníku Fronta přes Teigovy architektonické publikace, Sutnarovy výstavní katalogy a Tschinkelovy didaktické příručky, až po méně známé soukromé tisky Antonína Jera. V katalogu pak zohledňuje především jejich – pro funkcionalismus charakteristické – spojení abstraktních forem s fotografiemi nové věcnosti, které měly vést k vytvoření „nového druhu obrazového písma“. Záměrem publikace není pouze prezentovat izolované knižní obálky, ale také srovnat grafické řešení souborů a sledovat užívání prázdného prostoru, redukci geometrických prvků, použití obrazové statistiky a fotomontážních postupů na obálkách. Kniha není určena jen odborníkům z oblasti dějin grafického designu či dějin moderního umění, ale i ostatním zájemcům o tuto problematiku. Grafika Petr Bosák, Robert Jansa.
Člověk člověku: Karel Koch a Dušan Jurkovič
Snahou publikace Člověk člověku je přiblížit čtenáři profesní a přátelské protnutí lékaře Karla Kocha (1890–1981) a architekta Dušana Jurkoviče (1868–1947), které vyústilo ve společnou realizaci Kochova sanatoria s unikátní zahradou v Bratislavě. Název knihy Člověk člověku odkazuje na ústřední motiv Kochova myšlení: nejvyšším posláním člověka je lidskost, která má být naplňována v bezpodmínečně lidském jednání a službě druhému člověku. Úsloví připomínají Goethova slova, na něž se Karel Koch ve svých textech opakovaně odvolává: „Sám považuji za možné, že lidskost konečně zvítězí, jen se obávám, že pak bude svět velikánským lazaretem, v němž bude člověk člověku lidským ošetřovatelem!“ Jinými slovy, než si lidstvo uvědomí smysl této nejvyšší hodnoty, napáchané škody mohou být nedozírné. V tento moment pak bude lidskost jediným lékem. Toho byli Karel Koch i Dušan Jurkovič svědky i aktivními aktéry během obou světových válek i doby poválečné. Toho jsme svědky také v současnosti. Tento projekt vznikl v rámci výzkumného projektu Průmysl a umění: Opomíjené regionální osobnosti podnikatelů coby hybatelů hospodářského pokroku Československa, jejich význam a spolupráce s umělci, architekty a designéry (reg. č. projektu DG20P02OVV011), financovaného z Programu na podporu aplikovaného výzkumu a experimentálního vývoje národní a kulturní identity na léta 2016–2022 (NAKI II) Ministerstva kultury České republiky.

Publikace představuje souhrn, analýzu a syntézu dat získaných výzkumem málo známého nástrojového druhu dané oblasti ČR. Alikvotní flétna je zde představena jako součást světového a karpatského instrumentáře, jsou vysvětleny její akustické a herní vlastnosti, archaické výrobní postupy a její možný dopad na hudební myšlení v daném areálu. Text dále pátrá po alikvotní flétně a odvozených nástrojích jakožto zmizelých artefaktech tradiční hudby na zkoumaném území a dotýká se i procesu obnovy soudobé výroby a hry. Z hlediska použitých metod využívá analýzu písemných, zvukových a obrazových dokladů, komparace, experimentální rekonstrukce, empirické vyhodnocení nástrojů v soukromých i muzejních sbírkách a rozhovory s informátory. Většina z předložených dat je publikována v tomto rozsahu poprvé.

Album 1958–1977
Nakladatelství Torst vydává jako svou 700. publikaci fotografickou knihu Bohdana Holomíčka Album 1958–1977, která přináší na 176 stranách 238 snímků z prvního dvacetiletí jeho tvorby. Jedná se o druhou z řady knih s jednotícím názvem Album, která mapuje jeho fotografické dílo. První z nich, Album Václav, vyšla v roce 2016 a zachycuje Václava Havla od roku 1974 až do smrti v kruhu nejbližších přátel, se spisovateli, divadelníky, s manželkou Olgou, ale i s českými a světovými politiky. Fotografie Bohdana Holomíčka jsou již po více než šedesát let intimní kronikou životů mnoha lidí, které potkal. Vyprávějí o tom, že každý člověk je jedinečný a že lidský život má smysl. Jeho snímky přinášejí do života lidí radost, touhu prožívat každý okamžik naplno, vidět krásu a inspiraci ve všední každodennosti. O tom svědčí i jeho strhující osobnost. Teoretička umění Hana Buddeus ho jednou oprávněně nazvala „apoštolem lásky“. Historička fotografie Anna Fárová ho charakterizovala jako „fotografa přátelských setkání, zachycujícího pozitivní situace, okamžiky milosti, záblesky lásky za magického přispění světla“. Historik fotografie Antonín Dufek napsal, že „jeho fotografie jsou často přirovnávány k deníku, ale jak čas běží, stále víc se ukazuje, že je to spíš památník a kronika. Památník vzniká v komunikaci s ostatními a slouží také jejich paměti. V Holomíčkově případě jde o autobiografii, která se však stává i generační výpovědí; jeho snímky jsou sice subjektivní, mají ale obecnou platnost a reflektují vzpomínky celé společnosti.“

Fotografická kniha Trpaslík sleduje putování postavy Světlonoše, odehrané Petrem Niklem a zachycené fotografem Ondřejem Szollosem mezi lety 2014 - 2015. Je koncipovaná formou prozaické básně, vizuální jazyk se v ní prolíná s textovými úryvky.
Snímky vznikaly za ranního či večerního šera v okolí Prahy, Máslovic, Komáří Vížky a pobřeží Atlantiku u New Yersey.

In the 1950s and '60s, an underground network of transgender women, gender nonconforming people, and men who dressed as women found refuge at a modest house in the Catskills, New York. Known as Casa Susanna, the house provided a safe place to express their true selves and live for a few days as they had always dreamed?dressed as and living as women without fear of being incarcerated or institutionalized for their self-expression.
Casa Susanna opens up that now-lost world. The photographs?mostly discovered by chance in a New York flea market in 2004?chronicle the experiences of these women in states of relaxation, experimentation, connection, and joy. All of this was made possible by Susanna Valenti who?on her own journey toward womanhood?created Casa Susanna, a protected space where others could do the same. Supplementing the images, excerpts from the magazine Transvestia record a different kind of space where those who had been outcast by a rigidly binary society could connect.
The people who came to Casa Susanna found a space where they could explore and celebrate their own and each other’s femininity, as they could not elsewhere. Their creations are also a reminder that there were, and still are, many ways to explore the boundaries of gender.

Ruth Orkin (1921–85) always dreamed of becoming a filmmaker, and although that ambition was thwarted until later in her career, she quickly found other ways of engaging with the world of images. She was given her first camera at the age of ten and by the age of seventeen, she was cycling across America from Los Angeles to New York, documenting her trip in albums of annotated photographs. In the early 1940s she settled in New York, joining the Photo League and making her name with photo stories for major magazines such as Life, Look and This Week.
In images that range from celebrity portraits to bird’s-eye views from her apartment window, from children at play to the experiences of a lone American tourist in Italy, Orkin’s photography always retains a cinematic sense of the passage of time and allows the humanity and charisma of her subjects to shine through.
Yun Hyong-keun / Paris
A contemplative exploration of the work of Yun Hyong-keun, a renowned Korean abstract painter, during a transformative period in the early 1980s
From 1980 to 1982, Yun Hyong-keun resided in Paris, seeking both peace from the violent political turmoil that exploded in South Korea in 1980 and a new, artistic center in which to create work. His brief but illuminating stay in the city became the locus of his freedom of expression.
Yun’s signature abstract compositions engage and transcend Eastern and Western art movements and visual traditions, establishing him as one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century. He is the most prominent figure associated with the Dansaekhwa (monochrome painting) movement, the name given to a group of influential Korean artists from the 1960s and 1970s. Using a restricted palette of ultramarine and umber, Yun created his compositions of monolithic swathes by adding layer upon layer of paint to raw canvas or linen and to hanji (Korean mulberry paper), often applying the next coat before the one below had dried.
Published on the occasion of the artist’s exhibition at David Zwirner, Paris, in 2023, this limited-run cloth-bound catalogue focuses on his paintings and works on hanji made in Paris. In an accompanying text, the art historian Oh Gwangsu considers Yun’s work prior to his move to Paris, particularly the artist’s shift toward his signature works in the 1970s. The writer Mara Hoberman reflects on Yun’s practice and influences upon his arrival in the European capital, including an examination of his more nuanced understanding of the color black, which takes on different meanings in France and Korea.
