Interpretace
Interpretovat umělecká díla znamená hledat a nacházet jejich význam a smysl, odhalovat jejich napojení na naši bezprostřední zkušenost, ale zároveň přispět k jejímu obohacení, zintenzívnění a prohloubení. V tomto smyslu je interpretace tvůrčím, či dokonce riskantním počinem, k němuž neexistuje návod. Podle Zdeňky Kalnické je však možné hovořit o interpretačních strategiích, z nichž každá vychází z poněkud odlišných představ o tom, co je to umělecké dílo a jakou má funkci, každá klade důraz na jisté aspekty a interpretaci zaměřuje k určitému cíli. Ve své knize nabízí autorka interpretace konkrétních výtvarných, literárních a hudebních děl známých umělců a umělkyň, jako William Shakespeare, Božena Němcová, Karel Čapek, Salvador Dalí, Bedřich Smetana, Claude Debussy, ale i těch méně známých, jako Tan Dun, Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington, Roy Nachum. Vychází z přístupu, který je možno charakterizovat jako propojení pragmatické, hermeneuticko-archetypální a feministické interpretační strategie. Zvolená umělecká díla jsou vztažena k určitému teoretickému problému estetiky, např. esteticko-symbolický aspekt živlů, zejména vody; význam hmatu v umění; genderový aspekt umělecké imaginace či funkce archetypů v umění; nejsou však redukována na jeho „příklad“. Naopak: díla se stávají ohnisky soustředěné, teoreticky poučené estetické interpretace autorky, díky níž je možné nahlédnout i na známá díla novou optikou.
Španělský a Německý sál na Pražském hradě v 19. století
Publikace je věnována přestavbě reprezentačních sálů v severním křídle Pražského hradu, k níž došlo v souvislosti s uvažovanou královskou korunovací Františka Josefa I. Fra Angelico and the Rise of the Florentine Renaissance investigates the beginnings of Florentine Renaissance art, with the friar painter Fra Angelico at the centre of the story. Fra Angelico is one of the great masters of Renaissance art and responsible for its early achievements in Florence alongside the painters Masaccio, Masolino, Uccello and Filippo Lippi, the sculptors Ghiberti, Donatello, and Nanni di Banco, and the architect Brunelleschi. Fra Angelico is sometimes seen as separate from his contemporaries, because of his status as a friar.
A reconsideration of the chronology of his key early works demonstrates that not only was he a full participant in the artistic culture of his times, but a key innovator: the Prado's great Annunciation Altarpiece, Fra Angelico's breakthrough work from the mid-1420s, is the first Renaissance-style altarpiece in Florence. The Altarpiece has been the subject of extensive conservation and technological research at the Prado, the results of which are presented for the first time here. This catalogue focuses around that masterpiece, as well as two other recently acquired Fra Angelico paintings: the Alba Madonna and the Funeral of Saint Anthony Abbot.

When Sebastiao Salgado was finally authorized to visit Serra Pelada in September 1986, having been blocked for six years by Brazil's military authorities, he was ill-prepared to take in the extraordinary spectacle that awaited him on this remote hilltop on the edge of the Amazon rainforest. Before him opened a vast hole, some 200 meters wide and deep, teeming with tens of thousands of barely-clothed men. Half of them carried sacks weighing up to 40 kilograms up wooden ladders, the others leaping down muddy slopes back into the cavernous maw. Their bodies and faces were the color of ochre, stained by the iron ore in the earth they had excavated.
After gold was discovered in one of its streams in 1979, Serra Pelada evoked the long-promised El Dorado as the world's largest open-air gold mine, employing some 50,000 diggers in appalling conditions. Today, Brazil's wildest gold rush is merely the stuff of legend, kept alive by a few happy memories, many pained regrets-and Sebastiao Salgado's photographs.
Color dominated the glossy pages of magazines when Salgado shot these images. Black and white was a risky path, but the Serra Pelada portfolio would mark a return to the grace of monochrome photography, following a tradition whose masters, from Edward Weston and Brassai to Robert Capa and Henri Cartier-Bresson, had defined the early and mid-20th century.
