Graciela Iturbide's Mexico - Photographs
Iturbide is modern Mexico's subtlest, most profound chronicler
Graciela Iturbide, best known for her iconic photographs of Mexican indigenous women, has engaged with her homeland as a subject for the past 50 years in images of great variety and depth. The intensely personal, lyrical photographs collected and interpreted in this book show that, for Iturbide, photography is a way of life--as well as a way of seeing and understanding Mexico, with all its beauties, rituals, challenges and contradictions.

Claude Monet

2018 marks the centenary of Egon Schiele's death. To coincide with this occasion the publication will present the painting collection of the Belvedere Vienna including highlights such as Eduard Kosmack, House Wall, Death and Girl, The E mbrace and Four Tr ees. The book provides an opportunity to study the artist's work processes in greater detail and to follow the fascinating routes taken by his works before reaching the museum.
In 1918 the OEsterreichische Galerie under Director Franz M. Haberditzl was the first Austrian museum to acquire an oil painting by Schiele during his lifetime. Today the museum owns one of the top collections of paintings from the years 1907 - 1918 by the artist. The publication will examine each work separately and will answer questi ons with regard to their acquisition and subject as well as related works. At the same time, the results of the investigations into painting technique which the works have undergone since 2016 will be presented for the first time. Complementary essays the history of the collection and the changes to the stocks of Schiele's works which are taking place as a result of museum reforms, the exchange of pictures or the restitution of individual works.

Smrtí ke svobodě
Uplynulo sto let od konce 1. světové války a založení Československé republiky, jejíž existence trvala pouhých dvacet let. Název výstavy Postkonceptuální antikoncepce odkazující k radikální kritické tradici DADA, v sobě zrcadlí pro současnost charakteristickou „hru s diskursem“. Výstava si zvolila jako analogon k „hernímu principu současného diskursu“ oblast farmakologie, konkrétně té spjaté s oddálením početí. Pokračování 2018: Antikoncepci v názvu projektu lze ale také vnímat jako ironickou metaforu označující způsob práce, který jde oproti racionálnímu kalkulu spíše cestou intuice a vciťování. Vždyť co je koncepční, to souvisí v první řadě s myšlením, s rozvahou, kalkulem, s nějakým ideovým rozvrhem, jenž sleduje a naplňuje konkrétní cíl. Nick Brandt: This Empty World
This Empty World, Nick Brandt's new monograph, features a series of dramatically staged photographs that bring together and reveal the animals and people of East Africa as the victims of environmental degradation in an emotionally powerful, cinematic way. Moving into colour photography for the first time, the work is both a technical tour-de-force and a massively ambitious project in which several sets are constructed on a scale typically only seen in film production. Each panoramic image is a combination of two moments in time, almost all of them captured weeks apart from the exact same camera position.
Brandt first builds and lights a partial set, then waits for the animals that inhabit the region to enter the frame. Once captured on camera, the full set is built with the camera remaining fixed in place. The sets include bridge and highway construction sites, a petrol station, a bus station and even a dead forest.
Completing the scene with a huge cast drawn from local communities, Brandt then photographs the second sequence. The final large scale prints are a composite of the two intricately plotted elements. Viewed as a whole, the images vividly illustrate a world in which, overwhelmed by runaway human development, there is no longer space for animals to survive, and beg the question: what kind of world will we live in when stripped of its natural wonders.
Photographed on unprotected, inhabited Maasai community land, after the sets were removed and their elements recycled, no evidence of the images now remains in the landscape.
The Birth of Loud
A riveting saga in the history of rock `n' roll: the decades-long rivalry between the two men who innovated the electric guitar's amplified sound-Leo Fender and Les Paul-and their intense competition to convince rock stars like the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton to play the instruments they built. In the years after World War II, music was evolving from big-band jazz into the primordial elements of rock 'n' roll-and these louder styles demanded revolutionary instruments. When Leo Fender's tiny firm marketed the first solid-body electric guitar, the Esquire, musicians immediately saw its appeal.
Not to be out-maneuvered, Gibson, the largest guitar manufacturer, raced to build a competitive product. The company designed an "axe" that would make Fender's Esquire look cheap and convinced Les Paul-whose endorsement Leo Fender had sought-to put his name on it. Thus was born the guitar world's most heated rivalry: Gibson versus Fender, Les versus Leo.
While Fender was a quiet, half-blind, self-taught radio repairman from rural Orange County, Paul was a brilliant but egomaniacal pop star and guitarist who spent years toying with new musical technologies. Their contest turned into an arms race as the most inventive musicians of the 1950s and 1960s-including bluesman Muddy Waters, rocker Buddy Holly, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Eric Clapton-adopted one maker's guitar or another. By the time Jimi Hendrix played "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Woodstock in 1969 on his Fender Stratocaster, it was clear that electric instruments-Fender or Gibson-had launched music into a radical new age, empowering artists with a vibrancy and volume never before attainable.
