Druhý svazek Gombrichových studií o renesanční době a umění spojuje antologie Apellův odkaz a Staří mistři v novém nasvícení.
Název prvního souboru, Apellův odkaz (The Heritage of Apelles, 1976), připomíná nejslavnějšího malíře starověkého Řecka, který prý ve svých dílech spojoval dokonalou krásu s nedostižnou dovedností, s níž zachycoval vzezření přírody. Tento dvojí ideál dokonalé krásy a dokonalého napodobení přírody, zděděný z antiky, přetrvával až do dvacátého století a je východiskem poučených a inspirativních studií v tomto souboru, věnovaných otázkám tradice, hodnot a standardů, i konkrétněji pracovním metodám Leonarda da Vinci či malířským technikám zachycování lesku a světla. Druhá část knihy, antologie Staří mistři v novém nasvícení (New Light on Old Masters, 1986), se pak zaměřuje na jednotlivé tvůrce, nově zkoumá dobové texty a dokumenty a objevně interpretuje díla mistrů, jak byli Giotto, Leonardo da Vinci, Raffael, Giulio Romano či Michelangelo. Gombrichovy eseje zůstávají dodnes vzorem kvalitního psaní o historii výtvarného umění. Soubor O renesanci 2 vychází opět v překladu Martina Pokorného.

The Nansen Photographs
In the late 19th century, the Norwegian Artic explorer Fridtjof Nansen undertook a pioneering expedition: he wanted to reach the North Pole with the specially designed ship Fram. The Nansen Photographs recounts this expedition, from the launch in 1890 through to the end of Nansen’s international lecture tour in 1897, using original photographs alongside personal diary entries from Nansen and seven of his crew members. Together, they illustrate in a poignant and sometimes disconcerting way how the expedition members went about their daily lives and conducted their research, the conflicts they faced, and how they ultimately brought their daring undertaking to its successful conclusion.
This book brings new life to previously known facts and introduces the reader to hundreds of previously unknown photographs from the expedition. The large format of the book brings the smaller details in the photographs to the forefront, providing new insight into the work and life on board, the equipment and the clothing.
Opposing diary entries from Nansen and the men about the same situations show that life on board was not always easy and tell a gripping story of survival and the human condition. Nansen’s lack of empathy and practical skills caused frustration among the men, and several of them resorted to fists to sort out their differences, but nonetheless they all pulled through and set a new standard for arctic expeditions to come.
When Nansen leaves the ship for his legendary 18 month journey with Hjalmar Johansen towards the North Pole, we follow both Nansen and Johansen and the crew left on board through their photographs and diaries. Mingei
Nové přepracované vydání. Vlasta Winkelhöferová (1932–2022) byla jednou z nejvýznamnějších českých japanoložek. Kromě překladů se věnovala i dějinám japonské literatury, kultury a folkloru. Podobně jako její další knihy je i kniha Mingei – Lidové umění a řemeslo v Japonsku reakcí na několik dlouhodobých pobytů, které měla příležitost v Japonsku uskutečnit. Poprvé do této země cestovala na sklonku padesátých let, v době, kdy staré zvyky, tradice a řemesla byly ještě živou součástí japonského každodenního života. Na vlastní oči poznala atmosféru prostředí, v němž lidové výrobky vznikaly, viděla lidové řemeslníky při práci v jejich dílnách, hovořila s nimi a jejich výrobky kupovala. Velká část sbírky, kterou takto vytvořila, se později stala součástí asijské sbírky Náprstkova muzea v Praze. Lidové umění Japonska je specifické svým důrazem na funkčnost a obyčejnost. Neoplývá složitými vzory a sytými barvami, jaké jsme zvyklí si v této souvislosti představovat; krása lidového řemesla v Japonsku spočívá v přirozenosti, prostotě a poctivosti. Japonsko bylo po staletí uzavřené cizím vlivům a tato izolace spolu s pozoruhodným estetickým cítěním a existencí celé řady speciálních řemeslných technik přispěla ke zrodu osobité kultury. Kniha seznamuje s výrobky charakteristickými pro jednotlivé kraje souostroví, věnuje se jednotlivým typům uměleckých předmětů z keramiky, textilu, dřeva, bambusu, slámy a rákosu, ručního papíru, výrobkům z laku a lidové architektuře. V neposlední řadě se zabývá i vlivem umění mingei na život v moderním Japonsku.
Bruegel. The Complete Works
The life and times of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1526/30–1569) were marked by stark cultural conflict. He witnessed religious wars, the Duke of Alba’s brutal rule as governor of the Netherlands, and the palpable effects of the Inquisition. To this day, the Flemish artist remains shrouded in mystery. We know neither where nor exactly when he was born. But while early scholarship emphasized the vernacular character of his painting and graphic work, modern research has attached greater importance to its humanistic content.
Starting out as a print designer for publisher Hieronymus Cock, Bruegel produced numerous print series that were distributed throughout Europe. These depicted vices and virtues alongside jolly peasant festivals and sweeping landscape panoramas. He would eventually increasingly turn to painting, working for the cultural elite of Antwerp and Brussels.
This monograph is a testament to Bruegel’s evolution as an artist, one who bravely confronted the issues of his day all the while proposing new inventions and solutions. Rather than idealizing reality, he addressed the horrors of religious warfare and took a critical stand against the institution of the Church. To this end, he developed his own pictorial language of dissidence, lacing innocuous everyday scenes with subliminal statements in order to escape repercussions.
This collection captures all the breadth and splendid detail of Bruegel’s oeuvre like never before, and gathers all 40 paintings, 65 drawings, and 89 engravings in pristine reproductions?each piece a unique witness to both the religious mores and the close-knit folk culture of Bruegel’s time.
