The first substantial book on the French Neo-Romantics, a cosmopolitan group working in 1920s Paris who turned against modernist abstraction in favour of a new form of figurative painting. In 1926, the Galerie Druet in Paris made waves presenting a group of young painters who had spurned modernist abstraction and returned to a form of figurative painting. For most of them this was the first time they had exhibited, but their impact was considerable. Art critic Waldemar George baptized them the 'Neo-Romantics' or the 'Neo-Humanists'. They were influenced by Picasso, in particular his Blue and Rose periods, but went beyond him to forge new ways of painting. These were artists who liked to play with forgotten references and obsolete visual devices such as trompe l'oeil. They produced work for secondary art forms including the theatre, set design and ballet. In some ways they were the first post-modernists in the history of art, yet until now there has only ever been one book about them, After Picasso, published ten years after their exhibition. Only more recently has their influence on contemporary artists and thinkers including Max Jacob, George Hugnet and Gertrude Stein been recognized. Though friends, these painters never formed a formal group or movement. The Second World War sent them on different paths, with the Berman brothers and Tchelitchev moving to the United States. Before their departure, however, their activities attracted the attention and admiration of a cosmopolitan group of characters, including Gertrude Stein, Alfred Barr, Lincoln Kirstein, George Balanchine and many others including leading fashion figures of the day, Christian Dior and Elsa Schiaparelli.

Beatrix Farrand, the only female founder of the American Society of Landscape Architects, is one of the most important landscape architects of the early twentieth century. Today the scope of her work and her influence on the profession are widely acknowledged, and her gardens are being studied, restored, and opened to the public. A long-awaited updated edition of the 2009 definitive monograph, Beatrix Farrand- Garden Artist, Landscape Architect chronicles the life and work of one of the most important figures in American landscape architecture. Born into a prominent New York family (she was Edith Wharton's niece), Farrand designed lavish gardens for the leaders of society, including the Harknesses, the Rockefellers, and the Blisses. Ultimately, her portfolio extended to college and university campuses, including Princeton, Yale, and the University of Chicago, and public gardens, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and the Rose Garden at the New York Botanical Garden among them. Her best-known design is the landscape at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C., originally a private residence with extensive grounds and now a research center for Harvard University surrounded by a naturalistic park restored and maintained by the National Park Service. Deeply influenced by the English garden designer Gertrude Jekyll, Farrand was known for broad expanses of lawn with deep swaths of borders planted in a subtle palette of foliage and flowers. In her public work, she adapted this design strategy to create paths and plantings that define the character of the space and the hecirculation through it. Heavily illustrated with archival images and photographs of her gardens at their peak-many taken especially for this book, Beatrix Farrand- Garden Artist, Landscape Architect also displays beautiful watercolor wash renderings of her designs, now preserved at College of Environmental Design of the University of California at Berkeley. Klasická kytara prošla v posledních desetiletích dynamickým vývojem, který ovlivnil také techniky interpretace. Josef Mazan, hráč na klasickou kytaru a skladatel, v publikaci analyzuje 19 kytarových skladeb českých soudobých skladatelů a odhaluje nové interpretační prostředky. Zborník je zostavený z príspevkov, ktoré odzneli na vedeckom kolokviu konanom pri príležitosti ukončenia rozsiahleho pamiatkového výskumu Kostola sv. Mikuláša v roku 2019. Architektonicko-historický, reštaurátorský a archeologický výskum sa zameral najmä na identifikáciu najstarších vývojových fáz kostola, listinne doloženého v roku 1262 a v staršej literatúre datovaného do roku 1221. V prvej etape výskumu bola v presbytériu objavená jedinečná celoplošná fresková výzdoba, dnes už zreštaurovaná. Objavené boli tiež zamurované románske okná nad emporou a vo východnej stene bočnej lode, čo potvrdilo predpoklad, že celé trojlodie bolo vystavané v románskom období. Archeológovia zasa datujú najstaršie nivelety interiérových podláh a prvý horizont pochovávania na cintoríne do obdobia 10. - 11. storočia. Prekvapujúce nové poznatky vypovedajúce o dôležitosti regionálneho centra a naznačujúce dávnu tradíciu sakrálneho miesta budú zaiste vážnym podnetom pre ďalšie odborné diskusie a interpretácie. Výskum z iniciatívy vlastníka Rímskokatolíckej cirkvi, Farnosť Bratislava - Podunajské Biskupice podporilo Ministerstvo kultúry Slovenskej republiky a Fakulta architektúry a dizajnu STU v Bratislave.

It was in 1978, during my first summer of making portraits while using an 8x10 inch large format camera, that I found myself drawn to photographing redheads. I have often been asked; 'why redheads,' and I've often felt it was because in summer redheads seem to bloom in the sun more gloriously than the rest of us. But it also might have been my living far out on the tip of Cape Cod, surrounded by all the blue light of sea and sky, which made me pay more attention to the flamboyant qualities of redheads. Their hair and the exotic markings of their skin in sunlight became even rosier and more astonishing in that blue atmosphere. Redheads, like film itself, are transformed by sunlight. It seems natural to me now that I would have paid attention to this new phenomenon as it appeared within the larger subject of the Cape itself. After making more than 50 portraits that first month, in which at least 30 were of redheads, I understood that this was an impulse to be taken seriously. I ran an ad in the local paper, the Provincetown Advocate: "REMARKABLE PEOPLE! If you are a redhead or know someone who is, I'd like to make your portrait, call...." They began coming to my deck, bringing with them their courage and their shyness, their curiosity and their dreams, and they shared their stories of what it was like to be a redhead. They spoke of the painful remembrances of childhood, the violations of privacy and name calling-"Hey, red," "freckle face," "carrot head." They also shared with me their sense of personal victory at having overcome this early, unwanted celebrity, and how like giants or dwarfs or athletes they had finally grown into their specialness and by surviving had been ennobled by it. You could say that they had been baptized by their own fire, and that their shared experience had formed a "blood knot" among them. I had begun making portraits with the intention of photographing ordinary people. But redheads are both ordinary and special. Their slender slice of the genetic pie accounts for only 2 or 3 percent of the world's population. As different as redheads are in terms of nationality and religion, they often give the appearance of a strong familial connection.
