Jozef Bednárik významným spôsobom zasiahol hneď do viacerých divadelných druhov na amatérskej i profesionálnej scéne – činohry, opery a muzikálu, bábkového divadla, a svoju invenciu a novátorstvo prejavil aj v balete a televíznej dramatickej tvorbe. Bednárik si neustále pripomínal, že do života i do divadla patrí tragédia, komédia, dráma, zvuky, hudba, rytmus, pohyb rôzneho druhu, výtvarnosť – krása i škaredosť, slovo úprimné i falošné, klamlivé, lahodiace i disharmonizujúce. Od toho sa odvíjala Bednárikova režijná práca posvätená citlivou vnímavosťou, talentom, predstavivosťou, jeho optika nazerania na svet.
Objemná monografia je dielom renomovaných teatrológov pod vedením odborného garanta knihy, profesora Vladimíra Štefka, ktorý je zároveň autorom Prológu, Epilógu a dvoch štúdií – o Bednárikovom pôsobení v amatérskom divadle, v Divadle v Zelenči a o činoherných inscenáciách.
V ďalších častiach knihy Ida Hledíková analyzuje Bednárikovo pôsobenie v bábkovom divadle a skúma jedinečné Bednárikovo divadelné zameranie.
Klára Madunická približuje čitateľovi baletné a operné inscenácie, typické prvky Bednárikovej opernej tvorby a rozoberá jednotlivé inscenácie v tematických okruhoch (napr. mefistovské motívy, životopisné inscenácie, filmové inšpirácie a i.).
