In December 1948, Henri Cartier-Bresson travelled to China at the request of Life magazine. He stayed for ten months and captured some of the most spectacular moments in China's history: he photographed Beijing in 'the last days of the Kuomintang', and then headed back to Shanghai, where he recorded the new regime's takeover. Jak se dívat na svět, na život, na události, na situace a na lidské konání? Jako na divadlo. A proč ne? Zvolil jsem sice přístup prostřednictvím metafory performance, ale jsem si vědom, že na řadu jevů, příznivci dramatismu nazíraných prizmatem divadla či performance, se dá hledět i jinak. Didaktik může i bez prizmatu divadla sledovat ve třídě jevy, které jsem sledoval já. Volba metodologie ale byla mou záležitostí, Volil jsem to, co je mi blízké. Metafora divadla nabízela dobré otázky k pozorování a diagnostice jednání. Josef Valenta Divadlo se během své předlouhé existence naučilo výše zmíněné vnímat, pečlivě reflektovat, prozkoumávat. Tak nemohla nevzniknout otázka, zda analytické nástroje, jimiž divadlo zkoumá člověka, mohou být použity i mimo divadlo. Tedy ne při práci na tom, co budeme hrát a co tím chceme říci, ale při mimouměleckém zkoumání lidského chování, myšlení a prožívání. Divadlo se svými nástroji reflexe lidí a jejich životů a jednání je úspěšné. Analytická složka divadelní práce je evidentně evoluční výhodou. Kdyby nefungovala dobře, divadlo by nesporně zaniklo nebo by jen živořilo. A dramatikovo dobírání se podstat toho, o čem píše, a divadelnické dobírání se podstat toho, jak drama transformovat do scénické podoby, nese jisté shodné rysy s dobíráním se podstat jak v běžném životě, tak dokonce i ve výzkumu. Divadla jako prostředku poznávání se v polovině 20. století důkladně chopily vědy o člověku a pokusily se z této metafory učinit instrument svého výzkumu. Zejm. díky jménům Burke, Goffman či Turner se tzv. dramaturgická metafora etablovala v metodologii výzkumů sociálních interakcí. Tím ovšem její historie nekončí a téma je živé i dnes.
