Toys
Up until the 20th century, children's play was not a subject that demanded much attention. While objects that entertained children have been present from ancient history, it was only with industrial mass production-and a developing urban middle class-that toys appeared more frequently. As playthings began to display a robust economic performance, an industry rose to provide this new market with the objects of their desire. European manufacturers dominated the toy market, with Germany, in particular, supplying the American market with the bulk of both singular and mass-produced products. World War I ended its dominance, and by the 1920s, bolstered by American ingenuity, an ever-growing consumer culture supported by the media empires of newspapers, radio, and television, American toys became ubiquitous in the consumer market.
Ranging from the simple to the complex, children were inundated with a commodity to be wished for and sold to by the millions. From frilly dolls to science sets, children were marketed to with gusto, first through magazines and comic books and later through television. Toys fell along familiar gender lines all while being developed with the unspoken subtext of stimulating developing minds and being vehicles of problem solving with educational value.
If the first part of the 20th century represented the rise of toys in America, the postwar period signaled a market unleashed by the baby boom. That one event gained traction for the toy industry and propelled it to its current state. Unforeseen was the next chapter in the industry-the advancement of the technical revolution-which would create another dimension of toy products that would captivate both children and adults as one century blended into the next.In the world of toy production, the multimillion dollar industry took the advertising of their product seriously, and toy manufacturers inundated customers with their latest product via trade journals. Circus
In its heyday, the American circus was the largest showbiz industry the world had ever seen. From the mid-1800s to mid-1900s, traveling circuses performed for audiences of up to 14,000 per show, employed as many as 1,600 men and women, and crisscrossed the country on 20,000 miles of railroad in one season alone. Dramatická tvorba ostravského studia Československé televize (19551991)
Kniha se věnuje dramatickým pořadům vzniklým v ostravském studiu Československé televize od jeho založení v roce 1955 až do konce roku 1991, kdy vznikla nástupnická Česká televize. Navazuje tak na předchozí (2012) publikaci stejného autora, která se v obdobném časovém úseku pokoušela komplexně zmapovat dramatické pořady vytvořené brněnským studiem Československé televize: Dramatická tvorba brněnského studia Československé televize (19611991). Cílem monografie je popsat a analyzovat všechnu fikční narativní produkci studia, tedy pořady určené dospělým i dětským divákům a všechny žánry a programové typy (např. psychologická dramata, komedie, kriminální příběhy, adaptace literárních předloh, seriály, animované pořady, přenosy a záznamy divadelních představení, inscenace oper), a vytvořit tak celkový přehled vývoje dramatické tvorby severomoravského regionálního studia ČST. Vedle zkoumání samotných dramatických pořadů čerpá rovněž z archivních dokumentů a osobních rozhovorů se zaměstnanci i spolupracovníky studia a snaží se zachytit způsob a vývoj jejich tvorby v ČST i dobový kulturní a společenský kontext.

First published in 1814 and expanded in 1821 - long before the era of colour photography or print - Syme's edition of Werner's Nomenclature of Colours attempted to establish a universal colour reference system to help identify, classify and represent species from the natural world. Werner's set of 54 colour standards was enhanced by Patrick Syme with the addition of colour swatches and further references from nature, taking the total number of hues classified to 110. The resulting resource proved invaluable not only to artists but also to zoologists, botanists, mineralogists and anatomists.

Balkán alebo metafora
Po úspešnom profile Emira Kusturicu sa autorka Jana Dudková rozhodla potvrdiť svoje odborné zameranie na balkánske kinematografie ďalšou publikáciou, vymedzenou predovšetkým kontextom srbského filmu 90. rokov. V podrobných interpretáciách piatich filmov (Rany, Underground, Pekné dediny pekne horia, Čierna mačka, biely kocúr, Sud prachu) objasňuje podvedomé i vedomé snahy o vymanenie súčasného obrazu Balkánu zo zajatia tradičných stereotypov a predsudkov v jeho reflexii. Kľúčovým pozadím analýz všetkých spomínaných filmov sa v jej texte stala problematizácia pojmu „balkanizmus“, ktorý bol v polovici 90. rokov navrhnutý podľa vzoru „orientalizmu“ literárneho kritika Edwarda Saida. Päť filmov, ktoré si v Srbsku i v zahraničí diváci zvykli vnímať ako „typicky“ balkánske, autorka prezentuje ako potenciálne podvratné a ukazuje tak aj nové možnosti, ako je z Balkánu možné urobiť metaforu ľudského životného údelu, ale najmä ľudského myslenia a vnímania.

Favoured amongst street artists, graphic designers, illustrators and typographers, they have become a common phenomenon throughout cities all over the world. Inexpensive and easy to produce, stickers often aid in effective guerrilla advertising campaigns or individuals making their mark on their urban landscape. Spomenik' the Serbo-Croat/Slovenian word for `monument' - refers to a series of memorials built in Tito's Republic of Yugoslavia from the 1960s-1990s, marking the horror of the occupation and the defeat of Axis forces during World War II. Hundreds were built across the country, from coastal resorts to remote mountains. Through these imaginative forms of concrete and steel, a classless, forward-looking, socialist society, free of ethnic tensions, was envisaged.
Instead of looking to the ideologically aligned Soviet Union for artistic inspiration, Tito turned to the west and works of abstract expressionism and minimalism. As a result, Yugoslavia was able to develop its own distinct identity through these brutal monuments, which were used as political tools to articulate Tito's personal vision of a new tomorrow. Today, following the breakup of the country and the subsequent Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s, some have been destroyed or abandoned. Many have suffered the consequences of ethnic tensions - once viewed as symbols of hope they are now the focus of resentment and anger.
