Šašin!! Japonská fotografie 19. století
Monografie zpracovává téma rozvoje fotografického řemesla v nově vznikajících studiích a ateliérech od 60. let 19. století až do počátku 1. světové války na pozadí rozsáhlých změn japonské tradiční společnosti. Byli to především zahraniční návštěvníci Japonska, kteří si pořizovali ze svých cest fotografickou dokumentaci v renomovaných fotografických salonech, vlastněných jak zahraničními provozovateli, tak stále častěji i japonskými tvůrci, kde se vyráběla obsáhlá honosná alba s obrazy známých míst a také s ustálenými etnografickými typy zachycenými při charakteristických činnostech. Silnější a známější obchodní firmy však pohlcovaly své konkurenty a často rovněž přebíraly jejich archiv fotografických negativů do svých portfolií, což v současnosti výrazně ztěžuje identifikaci autorů jednotlivých záběrů. Mezi těmito tvůrci objevíme řadu umělecky zdatných fotografických mistrů průkopníků fotografického média v Japonsku, kteří celosvětově proslavili japonskou kolorovanou fotografii, jež ve své době patřila k mistrovským ukázkám japonského smyslu pro koloraci.
Miguel Rio Branco. Maldicidade
In Maldicidade, the city never sleeps. By dawn or dusk, in New York, Havana, Salvador da Bahia, or Tokyo, it is an environment fraught with yearning, aching with solitude, and fretful with fortunes never made. This searing urban portrait from visual artist Miguel Rio Branco draws upon his itinerant early years as the son of diplomats to reveal the common threads of struggle and loneliness in metropolises around the world.The images are impeccably captured, but the pictures are not always pretty. Rio Branco is not interested in documenting historic city landmarks, an impressive skyline, or the aspirational dreams that soar up towards it. Instead, he focuses his camera on the city's refuse and margins-on that which it has thrown away and on those it has cast aside and disappointed. In stark frames or soft impressions, it is street sleepers, beggars, prostitutes, stray dogs, smashed cars, and shattered glass that characterize his urban impressions.
While subtle details reveal the specificity of place, it is the commonality of urban experience at the heart of Rio Branco's project. Light on local context or explanatory narrative, the images are instead meticulously arranged into one redolent sequence of a universal city. Working as if in the cutting studio, Rio Branco excels in the rhythm and succession of pictures, crafting evocative patterns of motif (decrepit buildings, lone figures, smashed-up cars); color (rich reds, dusty pinks, stark whites and blues); and form (an anguished street sleeper beside an ecstatic statue of a saint). Throughout, occasional pictures of women are proffered as sensual, hopeful reprieve, interspersing the grit and the grime in commanding portraits or up-close, supple nudes.
At once incisive in its message and lyrical in its arrangement, Maldicidade focuses attention on the city's ineludible magnetism, as much as on its alienation and inhumanity. Biting, bare-faced, and achingly beautiful, it is a collection in which all city dwellers will find something of themselves, or something they long to escape.
Flee Flow Apartments
This book shows the transformation of an existing apartment with problems into a new, open floor space that satisfies the needs of the owners. The book presents the transformation of this space through full colour and b & w images and drawings of the 'before and after'. A description of the project, beginning with an overview of the existing conditions and a wish list of changes, adds to the understanding of the work involved. Architects/designers, owners, builders (indeed, many members of the team involved in the construction) bring in their own experience to point out the challenges faced during the remodelling, including building code issues, structural upgrading, pipe-work changes, and the inability to fully satisfy the owners' spatial requirements. The text also explains how the improvements have increased the value of the property.

Kniha se zabývá nepřeberným znakovým bohatstvím měst, vytvářejícím stabilní rámec životů jejich obyvtel. „Hluboké město“, které svou sémantickou hloubku často čerpá z imaginárních vztahů k antickému Římu, umožňuje maximum komunikace i sociálních interakcí. Evropská historická města k tomuto typu měst vesměs patří, ale vlivem sílícího turistického průmyslu a developerských projektů se jejich „hloubka“ vytrácí a těmto městům hrozí komunikační a sociální „plochost“. Kromě kapitol věnovaných Římu, Benátkám, Berlínu, Istanbulu, New Yorku, Praze a dalším městům kniha přináší i zhodnocení několika klíčových stavebních typů – nákupních center, stadionů, muzeí, knihoven a kostelů – a to právě z hlediska jejich schopnosti vytvářet, či naopak potlačovat historickou paměť.
