A regény művészete
"A regény állandó, hűséges kísérője az embernek a modern idők kezdete óta. A megismerés szenvedélye (amit Husserl az európai szellem leglényegesebb vonásának tekint) ekkor uralkodott el rajta, hogy megvizsgálja az ember konkrét életét, és megóvja a lét feledésé-től, hogy az életvilágra-ra állandó fényt vetítsen. Így értelmezem és egyszersmind osztom is azt a konokságot, amellyel Hermann Broch azt hajtogatta: Feltárni azt, amit csak a regény tárhat fel - ez adja a regény jogosultságát, egyedül ez. Az a regény, mely nem tárja fel a lét valamely addig ismeretlen részecskéjét, erkölcstelen. A regény egyetlen erkölcse a megismerés.
Hadd tegyem hozzá: a regény Európa műve, felfedezései, jóllehet különböző nyelveken történnek, egész Európa osztályrészének tekintendők. A felfedezések egymásra következése (és nem a szövegek összegezése): ez az európai regény története."
