Chopins Piano
In November 1838 Frédéric Chopin, George Sand and her two children sailed to Majorca to escape the Parisian winter. They settled in an abandoned monastery at Valldemossa in the mountains above Palma, where Chopin finished what would eventually be recognised as one of the great and revolutionary works of musical Romanticism - his 24 Preludes. There was scarcely a decent piano on the island (these were still early days in the evolution of the modern instrument), so Chopin worked on a small pianino made by a local craftsman, which remained in their monastic cell for seventy years after he and Sand had left.
This brilliant and unclassifiable book traces the history of Chopin's 24 Preludes through the instruments on which they were played, the pianists who interpreted them and the traditions they came to represent. Yet it begins and ends with the Majorcan pianino, which during the Second World War assumed an astonishing cultural potency as it became, for the Nazis, a symbol of the man and music they were determined to appropriate as their own.
The unexpected hero of the second part of the book is the great keyboard player and musical thinker Wanda Landowska, who rescued the pianino from Valldemossa in 1913, and who would later become one of the most influential musical figures of the twentieth century. Kildea shows how her story - a compelling account based for the first time on her private papers - resonates with Chopin's, while simultaneously distilling part of the cultural and political history of Europe and the United States in the central decades of the century. Rousseau
Henri Rousseau (1844-1910) was a clerk in the Paris customs service who dreamed of becoming a famous artist. At the age 49, he decided to give it a try. At first, Rousseau's bright, bold paintings of jungles and exotic flora and fauna were dismissed as childish and simplistic, but his unique and tenacious style soon won acclaim. After 1886, he exhibited regularly at Paris's prestigious Salon des Independants, and in 1908 he received a legendary banquet of honor, hosted by Picasso.
Although best known for his tropical scenes, Rousseau, in fact, never left France, relying on books and magazines for inspiration, as well as trips to natural history museums and anecdotes from returning military acquaintances. Working in oil on canvas, he tended toward a vibrant palette, vivid rendering, as well as a certain lush, languid sensuality as seen in the nude in the jungle composition The Dream.
Today, "Rousseau's myth" is well established in art history, garnering comparison with such other post-Impressionist masters as Cezanne, Matisse, and Gauguin. Dějiny loutkového divadla v Evropě
Z publikace tohoto francouzského kritika a divadelního historika, která v originále poprvé vyšla už před více než 150 lety (v roce 1852), citují snad všechny starší i současné práce autorů zabývajících se dějinami evropského loutkového divadla. Magninova útlá knížka je dodnes respektovaným pramenem poznání v této oblasti zejména pro svou šíři záběru a shromáždění dosud nepublikovaných literárních pramenů i odkazů na muzejní sbírky. Co však běžného čtenáře na Magninově díle především zaujme, je zřetelné okouzlení loutkami vůbec, včetně estetických i etických požadavků na jejich tvorbu. Nové vydání tohoto překladu přináší původně dvoudílnou publikaci v jednom svazku. První díl obsahuje pohled na loutky ve starověku a středověku, samostatné kapitoly jsou věnovány loutkám v Itálii, Španělsku, Portugalsku a Francii. Polské divadelní studio Reduta (zal. 1919) bylo jedním z reformních divadel, která se kromě inscenačních experimentů zabývala hledáním zcela nových modelů společenského uspořádání. Jan Jiřík analyzuje ve své knize kořeny tohoto jevu, který pojímá v antropologické perspektivě jako vyústění hluboké společenské změny, zastřešené termínem modernismus, a fungování Reduty popisuje jako modernistickou utopii.

Fotografie je bytostně hraničním fenoménem. Osciluje na hranici pomíjivého a trvalého, dynamického a statického, zjevného a skrytého, vědy a magie, informace a věci, pravdy a fikce, umění a průmyslu, profesionálního a amatérského, soukromého a veřejného, dokumentu a monumentu, analogového a digitálního, globálního a lokálního, jednotlivého a obecného, jednotného a množného. Hraniční fenomény jsou obtížně uchopitelné, nelze je totiž jednoznačně a trvale vymezit a identifikovat pomocí metodologických, konceptuálních, estetických či politických kategorií a norem. Hranici nezakoušíme jako okamžité překročení demarkační linie, nýbrž mnohem spíše jako postupné zjištění, že jsme již v jiném, cizím světě. Zkoumání rozhraní je proto vždy povýtce osobním příběhem, analýzou a zhodnocením vlastní zkušenosti takové mezní situace.
V této knize se texty historiků a kritiků umění, filozofů, sociologů a umělců soustředí na rozhraní mezi fotografií a sochou: věnují se jejich historickým i současným vztahům od problematiky fotografické reprodukce sochařských děl po vzájemné prolínání obou druhů v umění a kultuře.
