Botticelli Reimagined
Published to accompany the V&A's major spring exhibition, Botticelli Reimagined, 5 March to 3 July 2016 The Florentine painter Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) is one of the greatest artists of all time. Renowned for the iconic Birth of Venus and Primavera, his work has become part of our collective visual memory, influencing product development, fashion design and artists as diverse as Andy Warhol, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Rene Magritte and Jeff Koons. But Botticelli's fame today was by no means a foregone conclusion. Quickly forgotten after his death, he was only rediscovered as an artist in the nineteenth century - and much of what we know of his work has been pieced together from fragmentary evidence; only three of his works are signed or documented. Since then, 'Botticelli' has been interpreted in many different ways, and has led to many questions. How does a painter acquire international fame? What made Botticelli a pop icon? Why are his works considered timeless? What is it that makes him so 'European' that his Venus appears on the 10 cent coin?What we can say - safely - is that Botticelli, more than any other Old Master, inspired and continues to inspire modern and contemporary art.

Renoir
Celebrates one of the giants of French Impressionism with luxurious, large-format images Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) was one of the founders of Impressionism and a friend of Monet, Pissarro and Sisley. He worked side-by-side with Monet on the banks of the Seine, sharing his concern with light and colour, but landscape painting never displaced his enduring love of figure painting. Delighting in the ample curves of the nudes he painted increasingly frequently in his later years, Renoir was also a master at capturing the spirit of Parisian life. His art is filled with optimism - his lifelong philosophy was that he painted because it gave him pleasure, and he shares that pleasure with those who see his work. It is almost always summer in his pictures, and in paintings like Moulin de la Galette, The Dance at Bougival and The Luncheon of the Boating Party he gives us an enduring record of contemporaries relaxing and enjoying their leisure.
Vermeer

The Penguin Book of English Song anthologizes the work of 100 English poets who have inspired a host of different composers (some English, some not) to write vocal music. Kniha ukazuje, co všechno se v souvislosti hlavně s jazzem, ale nakonec hudbou obecně, může honit v hlavě člověku, který s ní žije desítky let, je jejím náruživým posluchačem, propagátorem, hodně toho o ní ví a „něco“ si o ní také myslí. Vladimír Kouřil patří k nejserióznějším hudebním publicistům a kritikům, kteří se jazzem dlouhá léta zabývají. Nejde tedy o „z vody vyvařenou“ dojmologii, nýbrž o soudy stojící na pevných nohou zvládnuté faktografie, mimořádné posluchačské zkušenosti a v neposlední řadě i značných mezioborových znalostí. Nejednou zde zabrousíme do literatury či výtvarného umění.
Titul knihy Africké květiny odkazuje na fakt, že cesta vývoje nejen jazzu, ale celé civilizace vyšla z lůna afrického kontinentu. Přímým podnětem pak byla jedna z nejkrásnějších skladeb Dukea Ellingtona Flaurette Africaine napsaná pod dojmem jeho pracovního pobytu v Paříži.
