Art in the Making
Today's artists have an unprecedented level of choice with regard to materials and methods available to them, yet the processes involved in making artworks are rarely addressed in books or exhibitions on art. Here, Glenn Adamson and Julia Bryan-Wilson argue that the materials and methods used to make artworks hold the key to artists' motivations, their attitudes to authorship, uniqueness and the value of objects, the economic and social contexts from which they emerge, and their approach to the perceived opposition between materiality and conceptualism in art. The book's introduction sets out a history of trends in artistic production and the possible catalysts for the proliferation of production strategies since the mid-twentieth century, followed by nine chapters that explore different methods and media. Detailed examples are interwoven with the discussion, including visuals that reveal the intricacies of each technique or material and its overall effect when presented as an artwork. David Hanvald (narozen 1980 v Liberci) patří k nejsledovanějším českým umělcům mladší střední generace. Ve svém malířském díle přehodnocuje a zpracovává zejména podněty, myšlenky a tvorbu modernistických autorů 20. století. Vzniká tak osobitá, barevně akcentovaná, syntéza postupů modernistických avantgard s postkonceptuálními malířskými trendy současnosti, která nabourává klasické vnímání malovaného obrazu.
Monografie Davida Hanvalda, mapující jeho práci z posledních let, je důkazem aktuálnosti malířského média a přináší čtenáři potěšení z kreativní umělecké práce.
David Hanvald (born 1980 in Liberec) is one of the most sought-after Czech artists of his generation. In his paintings, he reevaluates and works with the ideas, impulses, and work of 20th-century modern artists. The result is a distinctive and colorful synthesis of modernist avant-garde approaches with contemporary post-conceptual tendencies that breaks down the usual way we perceive the painted image. This monograph of Hanvald’s works from recent years provides evidence that the medium of painting has retained its currency, while also offering readers a sense of delight from creative artistic work.
The Circus
At its heyday, the American circus was the largest show-biz industry the world had ever seen. From the mid-1800s to mid-1900s, traveling circuses performed for audiences of up to 14,000 per show, employed as many as 1,600 men and women, and crisscrossed the country on 20,000 miles of railroad in one season alone. The spectacle of death-defying daredevils, strapping super-heroes and scantily-clad starlets, fearless animal trainers, and startling "freaks" gripped the American imagination, outshining theater, vaudeville, comedy, and minstrel shows. Precizní publikace soustřeďuje ukázky expresivních obrazů Michaela Rittsteina z období let 2001-2016, monumentálních soch Lukáše Rittsteina (2010-2015), především jeho odvážné „autobusové instalace“ Tour v litomyšlských Klášterních zahradách, a kreseb či fotografií Barbory Šlapetové, které vznikly na základě několika návštěv původních obyvatel Papui-Nové Guiney (2006-2015). Toiletpaper is an artists' magazine created and produced by Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari and born out of a shared passion for images. The magazine contains no text. Each picture springs from an idea, often simple, and through a complex orchestration of people it becomes the materialisation of the artists' mental outbursts. Since the first issue, in June 2010, Toiletpaper has created a world that displays ambiguous narratives and a troubling imagination. It combines the vernacular of commercial photography with twisted narrative tableaux and surrealistic imagery. Galéria Nedbalka má vo svojej zbierke zastúpeného Ladislava Guderna kvalitnými dielami, ktoré umožňujú podať ucelený pohľad na jeho tvorbu od začiatku až do konca. Maľby pochádzajú z rokov 1946 – 1997 a vďaka systematickej zberateľskej činnosti Galérie Nedbalka je možné sledovať celý vývoj autorovej tvorby. Výstava a katalóg približujú divákom pohľad na tvorbu tohto vynikajúceho maliara a grafika, rodeného surrealistu, ktorý sa vyznačoval osobitým videním sveta.

Koincidencia
So zásadami surrealistického umenia sa Guderna zoznámil v štyridsiatych rokoch 20. storočia, keď študoval u Jána Mudrocha a dostal sa do úzkeho kontaktu s predstaviteľmi nadrealizmu. Už vtedy objavoval jazyk snov a podnecoval svoju predstavivosť k inému videniu sveta. V tomto tvorivom období však ešte zostával na poli poetického zobrazenia a zásady surrealistickej tvorby naplno rozvinul až v Kanade.
Guderna tieto základné princípy surrealizmu rozvinul do osobitej podoby. Zmyselnosť a erotika sú v jeho dielach prítomné v rôznych podobách, raz len v náznaku, inokedy vo všetkých tvaroch a farbách. Čistá radosť z krásy a ľahkosti veľkých lietajúcich predmetov zdanlivo ignorujúcich fyzické zákonitosti evokuje svet odtrhnutý od pozemských ťažkostí. V Gudernovom svete vládne humor a irónia a často pracuje poetickou dramatizáciou.
Na obraze Koincidencia (1990) vidíme rovnomennú vládkyňu s vymyslenými, malými i veľkými príšerami, prízrakmi a bytosťami. Oficiálne fotografie Slovenského štátu sú pomerne neznámou veličinou v dejinách slovenskej fotografie. Publikácia Bohunky Koklesovej s fotografickými reportážami z archívu Slovenskej tlačovej kancelárie predstavuje výber 450 fotografií. Autorka sa sústredila na sformulovanie vzťahu medzi fotografiou a históriou, definuje pojem oficiálna fotografia, tlač, propaganda, cenzúra, interpretuje jednotlivé fotografické reportáže. Mnohé historické udalosti tak zobrazuje v inom, novom svetle.
Maqámy
Na konci 10. století vznikl zcela nový žánr klasické arabské prózy – maqáma. Vytvořil jej Abú ’l-Fadl Ahmad ibn al-Husajn ibn Jahjá, jemuž se v dějinách arabské literatury dostalo příhodného označení Badí‘ az-Zamán (Div své doby). Zasloužil si ho díky svým vynikajícím schopnostem a nevšednímu talentu, jimiž převyšoval své současníky a vrstevníky. Nesmírnou proslulost přinesl maqámám dokonale zvládnutý vytříbený literární styl a výjimečný jazykový talent al-Hamadháního, který se stal vzorem pro generace autorů rozvíjejících umění tohoto epického žánru. Maqámy vyprávějí o zvyklostech každodenního života obyvatel Abbásovského chalífátu, o šibalských kouscích podvodníků i potulných literátů. Umělecká hodnota al-Hamadháního díla je dodnes předmětem velikého zájmu spisovatelů a literárních kritiků v arabském světě i za jeho hranicemi.

Tři oříšky pro Popelku
Filmovou pohádku Tři oříšky pro Popelku natočil Václav Vorlíček v roce 1973 podle scénáře Františka Pavlíčka. Pro vznik a následné osudy tohoto filmu jsou charakteristické především tři rysy: natáčel se v prvních letech normalizace v koprodukci s východoněmeckým studiem DEFA; už v době uvedení byl pozitivně přijat diváky i filmovou kritikou a úspěšně prodáván do zahraničí; jeho popularita během následujících desetiletí neklesala, film naopak získával v některých zemích kultovní status.
Tyto specifické rysy určují témata, kterým se věnují autoři předkládaných textů: vznik filmového projektu na počátku normalizace; kulturní a politické souvislosti mezinárodní koprodukce; analýza filmového stylu a vyprávění; proměna distribuce filmu v kinech a televizi v Československu a Norsku; postupné vytváření kultovní pozice filmu u norského a německého publika; analýza kritického diskursu v československém normalizačním tisku. Studie skládají dohromady komplexní obraz příčin toho, že se Tři oříšky pro Popelku staly nejoblíbenějším vánočním snímkem hned v několika různých zemích s odlišnými tradicemi a kulturou
Zdenek Rykr a továrna na čokoládu
Zdenek Rykr je dnes řazen k nejoriginálnějším umělcům první poloviny 20. století v Čechách. Velká škála Rykrovy kreativity ukazuje na neuvěřitelnou tvůrčí energii umělce, který neustrnul a vždy hledal nové výzvy. Pokud v současnosti veřejnost ví něco o Zdenku Rykrovi, pak bohužel stále jen nepřímo. Většinou jí nic neříká ani jeho dílo, ani jeho osud, může však znát mouřenína z čokoládové tyčinky Kofila. Mnoho konzumentů této lahodné cukrovinky netuší, že autorem grafického návrhu Kofily, stejně jako provázkového písma Orion nebo orionské hvězdy, je právě Rykr. Jeho vazba k továrně na čokoládu byla v českém prostředí natolik výjimečná, že se stala hlavním motivem této publikace.

Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) was a world-renowned modern artist noted for her sculptures made of wood, steel, stone, and cast rubber.
