My Morandi
The Italian painter Giorgio Morandi is recounted as a friend and artist in this memoir by Luigi Magnani, an art historian and devoted collector of Morandi's work.
One of the most beloved and critically acclaimed artists of the twentieth century, Giorgio Morandi painted serial and permutational arrangements of everyday objects that elevated the quotidian into the sublime. In 1940, he struck up a decades-long friendship with entrepreneur, musicologist, art historian, and collector Luigi Magnani.
My Morandi is the first full-length English translation of Magnani's memoir reflecting on his bond with the artist and his long-standing academic and personal interest in Morandi's paintings. In My Morandi, Magnani considers the artist's aloofness from artistic trends and his dedication to painting for a small, discerning audience. He locates Morandi within the art-historical canon as well as recounts their artistic and intellectual kinship, which led to a unique, rich collection of Morandi's work at Magnani's villa in Mamiano, now the Magnani Rocca Foundation. Magnani's personal collection of Morandi's work was on view at David Zwirner, New York, in 2025. Originally published in 1982 in Italian, this memoir is accompanied by a new preface by Alice Ensabella and includes an introduction by Stefano Roffi, director of the Magnani Rocca Foundation.
Hilma af Klint
Hilma af Klint painted as though she was channeling the universe. Fascinated from childhood by botany and mathematics, she began her career painting landscapes and portraits, but other preoccupations stirred within her: questions of spirit, unseen energies, patterns too vast for the eye alone.
Her art was inseparable from her spiritual practice. With a circle of female artists called The Five, she held séances, heard voices from "High Masters," and was inspired by the Theosophical Society and Rudolf Steiner’s theories. Working tirelessly to map life’s hidden dimensions, she would paint to the point of physical collapse.
By 1906, her canvases featured radiant geometries of spirals and orbs, impregnated with symbols, letters, and words, anticipating the later embrace of abstraction by Kandinsky, Malevich, Mondrian, and others. Her vast painted cycles?like her works for the Temple and The Ten Largest?often depicted dualities: inside and out, the earthly and the esoteric, man and woman, good and evil.
Living as a vegetarian, questioning the fixity of gender, af Klint was clearly before her time, yet very much of it too, and pretty much uncelebrated in her day. Her prodigious output lay unseen for decades, locked away by her own instruction. Only in the 1980s did the world begin to recognize her as a true pioneer of abstract art.

První monografie Freda Kramera (1913–1994), nejvýznamnějšího českého reklamního fotografa padesátých až osmdesátých let, čerpá z rozsáhlého souboru autorových prací, které po jeho smrti věnovala do sbírek Uměleckoprůmyslového musea v Praze jeho manželka. Kramer vystudoval ve třicátých letech pražskou Státní grafickou školu pod vedením profesora Karla Nováka, u něhož o desetiletí dříve studoval také Josef Sudek. V té době se Kramer věnoval i sociální fotografii. Po druhé světové válce, během níž byl internován v koncentračních táborech, se k fotografii zase vrátil. Vynikal zejména v ateliérové práci, kde spojil výtvarný odkaz avantgardy s poučeným vnímáním tehdejších obchodních strategií. V padesátých letech i později spolupracoval s podniky zahraničního obchodu (Jablonex, Skloexport, Centrotex, Kovo ad.) i s domácím Domem módy. Od roku 1967 do počátku devadesátých let byl externím pedagogem na pražské FAMU, kde vychoval řadu budoucích profesionálů. Těžiště výběru výstavy je v jeho pracích z šedesátých let, kdy jako jeden z mála využíval také barevnou fotografii a spolupracoval s předními grafiky. Do obecného povědomí se nejvíce zapsala jeho tzv. Košířská madona, starší reklamní fotografie, kterou si v osmdesátých letech vybrali jako svoji značku mladí vydavatelé samizdatové kulturní Revolver Revue. Publikace, navazující na stejnojmennou autorovu výstavní premiéru, má ctižádost toto povědomí podstatně rozšířit.

Theodore de Bry
When Flemish engraver and publisher Theodore de Bry issued the first volume of his America series in 1590, the New World was truly novel for most Europeans. Gleaned from the travel accounts of adventurers like Thomas Harriot, Sir Francis Drake, and Sir Walter Raleigh, De Bry's magnificent engravings brought the new continent and its inhabitants to an enraptured audience across the Atlantic.
From "Virginia" (today's North Carolina) and Florida to Central America and down into Patagonia, the first nine volumes of America depict scenery and encounters between Native Americans and Europeans, revealing the latter's perceptions of the former. Portrayals of European discovery and Native American customs were based on the explorers' reports as well as De Bry's own imagination - he himself never traveled to the New World. Although based in Frankfurt, De Bry laid the foundations of the series while in London, collaborating with artists John White and Jacques Le Moyne, whose original watercolors he adapted for the opening two volumes. With his sons, De Bry formed a family enterprise known for exquisite copper engravings and high-quality illustrations unrivaled in their mastery.
The legacy of America is profound, coloring Europe's earliest visions of the Atlantic world. Throughout the following centuries, countless European illustrations would draw inspiration from the spectacular collection. TASCHEN's edition pays homage to De Bry's finesse, reprinting all 218 plates from the first nine volumes alongside their respective frontispieces and continental maps. Volumes I to VI are based on the original hand-colored editions held at the John Hay and John Carter Brown Libraries at Brown University in Providence; volumes VII to IX are from the Staats- und Stadtbibliothek in Augsburg, Germany.
