Blending the visual with the verbal, the pages brim with exaggerated anatomy, impish voyeurism, tender exchanges, and a surprisingly egalitarian attitude to enjoyment for both sexes.
In contrast to the prudery of 18th-century Europe, Edo-period (1603–1868) Japan accepted sexuality as a natural part of life. With shunga officially banned but tolerated in practice, many reputable artists navigated government censorship to embrace the genre with gusto, albeit under pseudonyms. These works were made to entertain, to arouse, and even used for good luck – samurai carried them as talismans when going into battle. Technical innovations in printing during Hokusai’s lifetime allowed for rich colours and exquisitely rendered textiles, but the content remained delightfully human: full of risky rendezvous, stolen moments, and scenes of marital (or extra-marital) bliss.
Realized with new photography of these rare works, and complemented by an in-depth introduction and explanatory essays, this retrospective offers gorgeous glimpses into a lesser-known but wildly imaginative thread in Hokusai’s over 70-year career: proof, perhaps, that great masters have their guilty pleasures too.

Ludwig Pollak (1868–1943) pocházel z pražské obchodnické rodiny. Studoval dějiny umění a klasickou archeologii na Německé Karlo-Ferdinandově univerzitě v Praze a později také ve Vídni, kde studia zakončil doktorátem. Roku 1893 získal stipendium na studijní cestu do Itálie (a také do Řecka). Posléze se natrvalo usadil v Římě, kde se živil jako obchodník s uměním. Kniha přináší edici Pollakových dopisů jeho učiteli, pražskému profesoru archeologie Wilhelmu Kleinovi a celoživotnímu příteli, historikovi Josefu Šustovi, se kterým se seznámil v Římě, kde Šusta pobýval díky stipendiu. Pollakovy dopisy, zpřístupněné zde v německém originále i v českém překladu, přinášejí cenné svědectví o zmizelém světě kontaktů mezi českými a německými (popř. českoněmeckými) vědci v období před první světovou válkou a v období meziválečném. Pollak zahynul s celou svojí rodinou v Osvětimi roku 1943.

On a winter’s night in 1949 in New York City, young marketing student and budding photographer Walter Chandoha spotted a stray kitten in the snow, bundled it into his coat, and brought it home. Little did he know he had just met the muse that would determine the course of his life. In 1947, Bill Gaines inherited EC Comics, a new venture founded by his legendary father M. C. Gaines, who was responsible for midwifing the birth of the comic book as we know it during his tenure at All-American Comics, bringing the likes of Wonder Woman and Green Lantern to the world. Over the next eight years, Bill Gaines and a “who’s who” of the era including Al Feldstein, Harvey Kurtzman, and Wally Wood would reinvent the very notion of the comic book with titles like Tales from the Crypt, Crime SuspenStories, Weird Science, and MAD.
EC delighted in publishing gory, morbid horror and crime comics that had snap, ironic endings—but they also pioneered the first true-to-life war comics, the first “real” science-fiction stories, and a series of tales about such then-taboo subjects as racism, bigotry, vigilantism, drug addiction, police corruption, and anti-Semitism. Too good to last, they were eventually caught up by various 1950s guardians of morality, who were convinced that EC’s often over-the-top content was causing juvenile delinquency. A year or so after a full inquiry investigating horror and crime comics, the incredible EC Comics were no more.
