Klasický jazyk architektury
Klasická architektura je vizuální „jazyk“ a stejně jako každý jiný jazyk má svá gramatická pravidla. Všechny stavby vykazují povědomí o těchto pravidlech, i když je variují, porušují nebo popírají. Christopher Wren je popsal jako „latinu“ architektury a tato analogie je téměř přesná. Rozdíl je však v tom, že zatímco učení se latině je pomalé a obtížné, jazyk klasické architektury je relativně jednoduchý. Je to stále do značné míry způsob vyjadřování našeho městského prostředí, neboť klasická architektura byla až do poměrně nedávné doby běžným jazykem západního světa. Každý, koho architektura silně oslovuje, již pravděpodobně sám objevil něco z její gramatiky.
V této knize si autor klade za cíl co nejjednodušeji a nejnázorněji vyložit přesné gramatické fungování tohoto architektonického jazyka.
Nezabývá se ani tak jeho vývojem v Řecku a Římě, jako spíše jeho rozšířením a používáním ve staletích následujících po renesanci. Vysvětluje disciplínu „řádů“ a dramatické odchylky baroka a v poslední kapitole vztah mezi klasickou tradicí a dnešní „moderní“ architekturou.

Michael Sorkin patří mezi nejpřímočařejší a nejbrilantnější autory píšící o architektuře. Ve svém souboru esejů What Goes Up, česky vydaném pod názvem New York, New York, New York, svižně a s humorem, ale přitom s hlubokým vhledem rozebírá procesy, které z jeho milovaného New Yorku udělaly město nablýskaných, ale vyprázdněných mrakodrapů a rostoucí nerovnosti. Rozkrývá zde podoby a praktiky těchto procesů od územního plánování a politických dohod až po jemné detaily architektonického designu a neváhá si přitom brát na paškál nejen developery, politiky a úředníky, ale i slavné starchitekty, jejichž stavby jsou někdy víc značkou než kvalitou. Není však jen kritikem, oceňuje město, které je budované zdola, v lidském měřítku a sestává z udržitelných, spravedlivých a živých sousedství, čímž navazuje na novinářku a aktivistku Jane Jacobs. Třebaže se Sorkinovy eseje zaměřují převážně na New York a byly napsány v letech 2010 až 2017, jsou přenositelné do dalších velkých měst i současnosti. Problémy, které glosuje, jako třeba gentrifikace, krize bydlení, monetizace veřejného prostoru, bezhlavě uplatňované zahušťování, stavění jen pro investice, urbanismus odvislý od automobilismu a mnohé další, jsou totiž dnes aktuálnější než kdy dříve.

Tato kniha je první reprezentativní publikací, která je věnována umělecké tvorbě Vratislava Nechleby (1885–1965), jenž působil jako profesor na pražské Akademii výtvarných umění po čtyři desetiletí. Patřil k nejvyhledávanějším portrétistům své doby v českých zemích, o čemž svědčí jak jedinečná série portrétů prezidentů od T. G. Masaryka až po Antonína Zápotockého, tak i soudobé podnikatelské, intelektuální a kulturní elity. Ačkoli vnímal proměnlivé proudy moderního umění, obracel se spíše k jistotám starých mistrů. Veristický způsob malby a technický perfekcionismus mu přinášely obdiv široké veřejnosti a lukrativní zakázky.
