A celebration of the rich 20th- and 21st-century tradition of screenprinting as a means of artistic expression, from its commercial origins in 1920s America to the limited-edition screenprints of the post-war period and today, by artists such as Andy Warhol, Bridget Riley and Damien Hirst.
Screenprints: A History, the first title in the V&A's new series on the history and practice of printmaking, is a celebration of the fine-art applications of this versatile medium, from the commercial origins of the screenprinting process in 1920s America, its pivotal role in 1960s Pop and Op Art among artists such as Andy Warhol and Bridget Riley, through to its adoption by Damien Hirst and the YBAs of the 1990s, and its enduring presence in contemporary art. This beautifully designed, strikingly illustrated introduction will appeal to art lovers and practising artists everywhere.
The origins of the screenprinting process are introduced through early artistic precursors, such as the stencil and pochoir printing in the making of Henri Matisse’s Jazz, and other artists’ books. Screenprinting became one of the most important techniques in the rise of artists’ limited-edition fine art prints from the 1960s onwards, seen here in the work of notable figures such as Roy Lichtenstein and Eduardo Paolozzi, and contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst, who have variously engaged with the medium’s commercial origins and, conversely, its capacity for a hand-made aesthetic.
Special focus is given to lesser-known names who pioneered the use of the screenprint in fine art in the UK, the USA and Europe, including Francis Carr and Ben Shahn, while tracing its global spread through Africa, the Caribbean and Australasia. An illustrated, step-by-step guide to the practical process further enriches this multifaceted account. The democratic medium has further lent itself to spontaneous graphic protest, notably in the Atelier Populaire posters made in Paris in 1968, featured here and embodying screenprinting’s unique qualities, rich colours and graphic impact.

Following the acclaimed first volume in Tadao Ando’s monograph series with Phaidon, Tadao Ando: The Colours of Light (1996), this new volume showcases the continual collaboration between Ando and photographer Richard Pare.
Beginning with the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St. Louis, Missouri, and concluding with the Bourse de Commerce project, located in Paris, the book features Pare’s stunning photographs of 28 contemporary projects in locations around the world, including Japan, Germany, Mexico, South Korea, Italy, and the United States. Pare’s images, most of which have never been published, expertly capture Ando’s quietly powerful approach to architectural design.
Created in close collaboration with Ando and his studio, Light and Space opens with a foreword by the architect, an introduction by architect Dominique Perrault, and four original drawings Ando created specifically for this book, printed on thin tissue paper.
The Plates section features spare layouts and immersive gatefolds throughout, with Pare’s images offering unique insights into Ando’s acute attention to light and volume and how they engage with one another. An appendix, printed on textured paper, offers additional information about each project, including technical specifications, a brief descriptive text, as well as detailed sections and plans.
This clothbound, jacketed book closely aligns with the packaging of the first volume, creating an elegant companion set.

Troufalá libozvučnost rekonstruuje různá pojetí vzdálenosti trojzvuků, s nimiž se můžeme setkat v harmonickém myšlení 19. století, ale která se již dnes do dědictví hudební teorie nezařazují. Poznáme-li tato alternativní pojetí, nakolik se promění naše představa o tom, jak posluchači v 19. století chápali harmonické vztahy, jaké strategie tehdy využívali skladatelé a jak se rozhodovali, když se snažili své posluchače přilákat a formovat? Jaký podíl mají tato alternativní pojetí, strategie a rozhodování z nich vyplývající, na vytříbeném charismatu, jež na nás dosud u mnoha kompozic tohoto období tak silně působí? Teoretici 19. století, pro něž byla harmonie hlavním předmětem bádání, tyto otázky částečně zodpověděli. Předkládaná kniha jejich skicu rozvádí v plně propracovanou hypotézu, jež využívá termíny, technické postupy i způsoby zobrazování, které byly v 19. století nedostupné.
Rembrandt. The Complete Paintings
The Dutch Golden Age of painting spawned some of history’s greatest artists and artisans, but few can boast the genius and legacy of Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606–1669). Despite never leaving his native Netherlands, Rembrandt projected his oeuvre past the boundaries of his own experience, producing some of art’s most diverse and impactful works across portraiture, biblical, allegorical, landscape, and genre scenes. In all their forms, Rembrandt’s paintings are built of intricacies?the totality of each subtle facial wrinkle, gaze, or figure amounting to an emotional force that stands unmatched among his contemporaries and artistic progeny alike.
Each work is imbued with feeling. Biblical scenes, like Bathsheba at her Bath, become vehicles for meditations on human longing, probing depths beyond that which is canonized in scripture or depicted in other representations. Perhaps most striking, his series of self-portraits is a triumph of the medium; beginning in his youth and spanning until a year prior to his death, Rembrandt’s self portraiture is an intimate glimpse into his lifelong process of self-reflection.

Výtvarnú dráhu Daniela Szalaia (1964) sleduje galéria od jeho nástupu v 90. rokoch 20. storočia. Jeho diela predstavila na dvoch výstavách. Prvýkrát prezentovala pastely zo série Hebrejskej abecedy (1999) a druhýkrát výber z kresieb a diel „transplant artu“ – prác na röntgenových snímkach (2014). V rámci tejto originálnej autorskej techniky, od roku 2002 vznikajú objekty a inštalácie so silným existenciálnym nábojom – ktoré sú utkané z pásov röntgenových snímkov. Nedávna retrospektíva (2024) načrtla výtvarnú dráhu autora od študentských čias, po jeho aktuálne obdobie – vo svojej žánrovej rozmanitosti. Dostali v nej priestor práce z oblasti textilu, maľby, kresby, objekty a inštalácie z „transplant artu“ – či novšie koláže s ekologickou témou. Katalóg výstavy predstavuje svojrázny profil výtvarníka-pedagóga, ktorý odráža symbiózu jeho profesionálnej a výtvarnej dráhy.

Katalóg Kameň - papier – krajina - Michal Kern v dialógu s Mariou Bartuszovou bol publikovaný k rovnomennej výstave, ktorá sa konala v Galérii umenia Ernesta Zmetáka v Nových Zámkoch v termíne 5. september - 19. október 2024. Katalóg bol následne publikovaný v decembri 2024.
Katalóg z výstavy "Kameň - papier - krajina - Michal Kern v dialógu s Mariou Bartuszovou" prostredníctvom dvoch odborných štúdií (D. Čarná, G. Garlatyová) a bohatého vizuálneho materiálu zahŕňajúceho tvorbu autorov aj samotnú výstavu, mapoval príbuznú poetiku tvorby dvoch ťažiskových osobností domácej výtvarnej scény, ktorých tvorba je dnes uzavretá, avšak otvorená pre ďalší výskum a nové interpretácie. Prepojenie a dialóg oboch autorov, ich myslenia a vizuálneho jazyka, vnímame ako podnetné vzhľadom k schopnosti oboch ísť sústredene "pod povrch" a do hĺbky, pozorovaním sveta primárnych javov, procesov a diania v prírode, ktorým dokázali dať unikátnu vizuálnu podobu.
- Michal Kern cez akcie v prírode, ktoré fotograficky zaznamenával a Maria Bartuszová v podobe organických plastík. Príbeh a tvorba oboch autorov je tiež dobovým ale aj aktuálnym príspevkom k otázkam ekológie a k problémom centra a periférie. Spojenie dvoch príbuzných poetík tvorby na výstave prinieslo do čítania ich, dnes už z veľkej časti spracovanej tvorby, nové uhly pohľadov a bolo prínosom ako pre odbornú, tak aj širokú verejnosť.
Eliška Rožátová - Tvorba z let 1964-2024
Výpravná monografie Elišky Rožátové ukazuje její odvážně experimentující dílo – sklářskou tvorbu charakteristickou expresivním způsobem propojování skla s kovem i dalšími materiály, návrhy a realizace v architektuře (mozaiky a vitráže), instalace v krajině reagující na přírodní procesy, a také její dosud málo známou, avšak výraznou malířskou tvorbu. Tato kniha je prvním komplexním zpracováním jejího vrstevnatého a v mnoha směrech novátorského díla z let 1964–2024.

Georg Baselitz
Known for the audaciously simple but game-changing strategy of painting the motif on its head, Georg Baselitz has been a consistently challenging artist since the start of the 1960s. His work is always highly charged but surprisingly diverse, beginning with the raw, existential male figures famously removed from his first solo exhibition for indecency, and the series of “Heroes” that portrayed disabled and exposed figures in a destroyed landscape. During this development, the picture space became more and more fractured, and by the end of the decade the artist fully turned the world upside down: trees, factories, eagles, or nude self-portraits actually painted on their heads. This soon allowed him to freely paint and to engage with conceptual color schemes or off-beat themes, such as men eating oranges, Soviet propaganda paintings, or more recently so-called remixes in a reengagement with his own earlier work as a dialogue in time. Already a master of drawing, woodcut, and engraving, from 1980 on Baselitz also created rough sculptures hewn from wood with axe and chainsaw, then adding bronze to his materials in the late 2000s.

Jaroslav Ježek (1923 – 2002)
Jaroslav Ježek je nejznámější postavou novodobé historie výroby československého porcelánu. V porcelánovém průmyslu začal pracovat roku 1949 během své studentské praxe, první porcelánkou, v níž působil, byla Thunská továrna v Klášterci nad Ohří. Po spojení všech československých porcelánek v národní podnik Karlovarský porcelán působil Jaroslav Ježek ve Vývojovém závodě Lesov, kde pod jeho vedením připravoval tým skvělých řemeslníků prototypy pro následnou sériovou výrobu. Navržené a vyvzorované soupravy i plastiky reprezentovaly československou porcelánovou výrobu na mezinárodních výstavách a veletrzích nebo byly přihlašovány do soutěží průmyslového designu, kde pravidelně získávaly nejvyšší ocenění. Nejpopulárnějšího uznání se Jaroslavu Ježkovi dostalo na Expo ’58 v Bruselu, kde jeho souprava Elka a plastiky hřebečků patřily do kolekce oceněné Grand Prix a zlatou medailí. Během Ježkova života se měnily nejen výrobní technologie, ale i vztah společnosti k porcelánové soupravě. Z exkluzivního předmětu určeného pro sváteční okamžiky se pomalu stávalo běžné spotřební zboží. Ježek navrhoval soupravy pro běžný stůl, ale měl snahu udržet hodnoty porcelánu pomocí malosériových souborů nebo originálních dekorů. Nakreslil desítky konvic, hrnků, terin, omáčníků, dekorů a figurek, věnoval porcelánu celý život a porcelán mu na oplátku umožnil uplatnit vrozený talent. Prostřednictvím jeho porcelánových tvarů lze prakticky sledovat celý umělecký vývoj československé porcelánové soupravy i plastiky po celé velmi dlouhé období od 50. až do 90. let dvacátého století. Z jeho úspěchů, ale i každodenních snah zachycených v pracovních zápisnících lze získat představu o běžné praxi a životě v československém porcelánovém průmyslu.
