Publikace je první knihou, která souhrnně přibližuje budování celostátní sítě kulturních domů, jež byla systematicky zřizována v období socialismu na území bývalého Československa. Tyto stavby se jako místa veřejného života poválečné společnosti těšily velkorysé státní podpoře, a to nejen po stránce ekonomické, ale i politické či legislativní. Náš zájem se nesoustředí pouze na jejich specifickou typologii, ale nahlížíme také jejich osvětový a emancipační potenciál i roli politického nástroje organizace a kontroly volného času. Publikace se rovněž zaměřuje na hledání kořenů a programových předchůdců kulturních zařízení vznikajících od 19. století i v meziválečné době (spolkové a národní domy nebo domy pracujících), s přesahem do období po roce 1989, kdy se budovy a jejich provozovatelé museli a někdy stále musí vyrovnávat s aktualizačními nároky. Kniha pokrývá český i slovenský kontext výstavby kulturních domů, díky čemuž se daří nejen pokrýt celé území bývalého Československa, ale také zachytit rozdílné historické zkušenosti. Texty do knihy napsali Jiří Andrs, Jan Galeta, Hubert Guzik, Katarína Haberlandová, Michaela Janečková, Laura Krišteková, Josef Ledvina, Irena Lehkoživová, Henrieta Moravčíková, Peter Szalay, Karel Šima, Jitka Šosová, Lukáš Veverka, Jan Zikmund, předmluvu přední britský historik kultury a umění David Crowley. Kniha je kombinací odborné knihy a obrazové publikace se snímky fotografů Oskara Helcela a Martina Netočného, kteří již od dob svých studií na pražské FAMU objížděli a fotili kulturní domy v České (a následně i Slovenské) republice. Během let shromáždili tisíce snímků více než padesátky objektů z celého území bývalého Československa. Série fotografií člení texty do čtyř částí, z nichž první se zaměřuje na historické předobrazy kulturních domů v českých zemích i na Slovensku od 19. století, druhý pak na praktické aspekty jejich výstavby v době státního socialismu. Třetí sleduje dějiny a proměny kulturních domů v českých zemích od druhé světové války do devadesátých let 20. století. Čtvrtý oddíl se soustředí na totéž na slovenském území a dále obsahuje dvě případové studie, jednu ze Slovenska a druhou z České republiky. Jakub Stejskal pracuje jako vedoucí výzkumného týmu na semináři dějin umění Masarykovy univerzity. Před tím působil na univerzitách v Basileji a Berlíně. V roce 2014 získal doktorát z estetiky na Univerzitě Karlově. Je autorem řady studií a jedné knihy na pomezí filozofické estetiky, dějin umění, archeologie a antropologie. Metakunsthistorie je jeho první knihou v českém jazyce. “Culture,” “style,” “form,” “image,” “medium,” “context” or “material” are terms we standardly use when discussing past and contemporary art works. This book is intended for those interested in the ideational grounding of these terms and the role they have been playing in both academic and non-academic reflections on art and art history. Jakub Stejskal works as head of a research team of the Department of Art History at Masaryk University. He previously worked at universities in Basil and Berlin. In 2014, he received a doctorate from aesthetics at Charles University. He is the author of a number of studies and one book which addresses the philosophy of aesthetics, art history, archeology and anthropology. Metakunsthistorie is his first book published in Czech.

Ondak spent his childhood and adolescence in Czechoslovakia, then relatively isolated by its autocratic regime, and learned to understand society as an attempt to order existence through divisions and classifications of inclusion and exclusion. The artist addresses the failure of this structure in his work, while deploying the potential of other orders, other patterns of behavior and, ultimately, alternative social and political possibilities. His work often gives the impression that reality has been slightly readjusted, which in part is a tactical response to the propagandistic alterations of image and word that were the norm during the artist’s formative years.
