Northern Lights
The Forest in modernist art
The fascination of the North is enduring: vast, impenetrable coniferous forests on the edge of the Arctic polar region, "white" summer nights, the long darkness of snowy winters and the famous Northern Lights exert a magical attraction. The Fondation Beyeler is dedicating an exhibition to this global phenomenon with landscape paintings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries from Scandinavia, Finland and Canada. In addition to works by famous painters such as Edvard Munch, Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Hilma af Klint, it also features paintings by artists who are highly respected in their home countries, but who-unjustly-have been virtually unknown in Central Europe until now. The Nordic pictorial worlds of Harald Sohlberg, Gustaf Fjaestad, Emily Carr, Tom Thomson and Prince Eugen of Sweden are finally being presented to a wide audience. Other artists represented in the exhibition and catalogue are Ivan Shishkin, Anna Boberg, Helmi Biese, Fanny Churberg, Lawren S. Harris and J. E. H. MacDonald.

Perhaps more than any other text, A Little History of Photography by the German-Jewish thinker Walter Benjamin has shaped the way in which we understand early photography and the photographic act. Výbor analýz, glos a polemik Bohumila Nekolného k tématu provozování a podpory kultury a umění v Česku navazuje na publikaci Divadlo a společnost kolem roku 1989. Zatímco první díl sledoval přelomové období konce osmdesátých a začátku devadesátých let, ve druhém svazku autor shromáždil své úvahy a články z let 1998–2020. A nevyhýbá se značně kritickým glosám k našemu politickému životu ani jeho reflexi. Mnoho problémů popsaných v prvním díle bohužel přetrvává: nedostatečný zájem a podpora živého umění ze strany politické reprezentace, nedokončená transformace divadelní sítě, chybějící legislativa či neutěšená situace kulturních periodik. Jiří Netík (1953) je jeden z nejvýznamnějších současných českých řezbářů a sochařů. Jeho díla jsou vystavována a obdivována nejen v České republice, ale i v zahraničí. Je držitelem mnoha ocenění za výtvarné umění a design, o jeho práci bylo natočeno několik filmů. Jako jedné z mála uměleckých osobností mu byla udělena audience u papeže. Betlém Jiřího Netíka byl vystaven v katedrále Notre-Dame v Paříži.

Vícejazyčná publikace se soustředí na problematiku avantgardní typografie.
