Kolem roku 1900 se na umělecké scéně v Čechách prosazuje moderna. Proces české národní emancipace vrcholí a sebevědomé české umění se více otevírá západnímu světu. Oproti tomu němečtí umělci v Čechách, náležící dosud k širokému německému kulturnímu okruhu, si svou osobitou identitu teprve začínají uvědomovat. Soupeří tak s českými kolegy, kdo se jako první zařadí do mezinárodního rozvoje moderny, ale zároveň je pro jejich tvorbu důležitá vlastní svébytnost a přináležitost ke kulturní tradici české země. Jak se tyto na první pohled neslučitelné intence projevily v tehdejší architektonické produkci? Dnes máme tendenci nazírat architekturu českých Němců ve srovnání s českou tvorbou jako méně moderní. Není ale tento pohled zkreslen naší snahou sledovat v českém umění v první řadě projevy modernosti, kdežto v umění českých Němců si všímáme především dokladů nacionalismu a tradicionalismu? Úkolem této knihy není posoudit, nakolik byla tvorba českoněmeckých architektů kolem roku 1900 moderní. Cílem je spíše představit ji jako integrální součást soudobého evropského diskurzu. Chceme ukázat, že za jejím tradicionalismem nemusely stát nacionální intence, ale snaha o návrat k předindustriální jednoduchosti, prostotě a přirozenosti. Moderní architektura přelomu 19. a 20. století měla dvojí tvář: obracela se ke kořenům a přirozené domácí tradici, stejně jako sledovala potřeby nové doby. Jednotlivé kapitoly se věnují nejprve obecnějším otázkám vztahu moderního a tradičního v architektonickém diskurzu kolem roku 1900 a dále probírají problematickou situaci německého umění v Čechách. Následně se kniha zaměřuje na vedoucí osobnosti pražské i regionální českoněmecké architektury, na jejichž tvorbě ukazuje různé způsoby vztahování se k modernímu a lokálnímu. The Modern and the Local The Architecture of Bohemian Germans 1891–1918 Around 1900, modernism was gaining ground on the art scene in Bohemia. The process of Czech national emancipation was reaching its peak and self-confident Czech art was opening up more to the Western world. In contrast, German artists in Bohemia, still belonging to the broad German cultural circle, were only beginning to realise their distinctive identity. They are thus competing with their Czech colleagues to be the first to join the international development of modernism, but at the same time their own uniqueness and belonging to the cultural tradition of the Czech country is important for their work. How did these seemingly incompatible intentions manifest themselves in the architectural production of the time? Today, we tend to view the architecture of the Czech Germans as less modern compared to the Czech production. But isn't this view distorted by our tendency to look primarily for manifestations of modernity in Czech art, whereas in the art of the Czech Germans we notice primarily evidence of nationalism and traditionalism? It is not the task of this book to assess to what extent the work of Czech-German architects around 1900 was modern. Rather, the aim is to present it as an integral part of contemporary European discourse. We want to show that its traditionalism was not necessarily driven by nationalistic intentions, but by a desire to return to pre-industrial simplicity, simplicity and naturalness. Emil Filla, čínské umění a totalitní přízraky/Emil Filla, Chinese Art and Totalitarian Phantoms Kniha se věnuje poválečné tvorbě českého malíře, sochaře a teoretika Emila Filly (1882–1953) a jeho vztahu k čínskému umění a komunistické ideologii. Popisuje Fillovu jedinečnou sbírku čínského umění a přibližuje její vznik. Přináší také zamyšlení nad Fillovým chápáním dálněvýchodní malby, které se odrazilo v jeho textech o čínské krajinomalbě i jeho pozdních obrazech. Právě jim je věnována zvýšená pozornost, a to zejména z hlediska postoje, který k nim zaujímali představitelé komunistického režimu, jejichž často vulgarizující názory hluboce a neblaze zasahovaly do umělcova života i díla. Filla čelil různým formám perzekucí, přesto se mu podařilo zůstat až do konce života ve funkci profesora Vysoké školy uměleckoprůmyslové v Praze. Kniha vychází při příležitosti otevření nové expozice v Pamětní síni Emila Filly na zámku Peruc, který umělci poskytl letní útočiště a sehrál v jeho pozdních aktivitách podstatnou roli.

Santiago Calatrava is a world-renowned architect, structural engineer, sculptor, and artist. From the Athens 2004 Olympic Sports Complex to the World Trade Center Transportation Hub in Manhattan, he exhibits a remarkable twin prowess for aesthetics and engineering, a simultaneous sensitivity to both the appearance and the anatomy of a structure. His influences are wide-ranging: Auguste Rodin’s approach to sculpture and architecture, principles of classicism and Greek Cycladic art, NASA space design, and a deep admiration for nature, which he regards as both mother and teacher. Thus, Calatrava’s creations are at once aerodynamic and organic in their associations, with natural forms and human movement informing many of his projects. He takes a particular interest in the meeting point of equilibrium and dynamism. Frank Frazetta finally gets the beautiful book he deserves Frank Frazetta has reigned as the undisputed king of fantasy art for 50 years, his fame only growing in the years since his death. With his paintings now breaking auction records (Egyptian Queen sold for $ 5.4 million in 2019) he’s long overdue for this ultimate monograph. Born to a Sicilian immigrant family in Brooklyn, 1928, Frazetta was a minor league athlete, petty criminal and serial seducer with movie star looks and phenomenal talent. He claimed to only make art when there was nothing better to do – he preferred playing baseball - yet began his professional career in comics at age 16. Strip work led him to the infamous EC Comics, then to oils for Tarzan and Conan pulp covers. Both characters were interpreted by many before him, but as he explained in the 1970s, “I’m very physical minded. In Brooklyn, I knew Conan, I knew guys just like him,” and he used this first-hand knowledge of muscle and macho to redefine fantasy heroes as more massive, more menacing, more testosterone-fueled than anything seen before. As counterbalance he created a new breed of women, nude as censorship allowed, with pixie faces and multiparous bodies: thick thighed, heavy buttocked, breasts cantilevered out to there, yet still, with their soft bellies and hints of cellulite, believably real. Add in the action, the creatures, the twilit worlds of haunting shadow and Frazetta’s art is addictive as potato chips.

Napriek tomu jeho postava, opradená tajuplnými historkami a často protirečivými súdmi, zostáva stále záhadná. Jeho život je úzko spätý so zvláštnymi hlavami, známymi ako „charakterové hlavy“. Práci na týchto hlavách, ktoré si nikto neobjednal, venoval v posledných rokoch života väčšinu svojho času.
