Obrazy Jaroslav Valečky jsou často inspirovány různými příběhy, které se vztahují ke krajině malířova dětství stráveného v českém pohraničí, zle zasaženého odsunem a sovětskou okupací. Většina obrazů je postavena na konkrétním příběhu, který je výtvarně zpracován. Některé příběhy jsou strašidelné, třeba když jako kluci na místním zcela zdevastovaném německém hřbitově marně hledali zlaté zuby a toužili ukrutně zbohatnout. Jiné jsou poetické, například když se nad Máchovým jezerem nečekaně objevila velmi silná polární záře, která ovšem nebyla přírodním jevem, ale hořícím palivem vypuštěným z vážně poškozené sovětské stíhačky přistávajícím na nedalekém letišti.
The Parthenon Marbles
The Parthenon Marbles (formerly known as the Elgin Marbles), designed and executed by Pheidias to adorn the Parthenon, are perhaps the greatest of all classical sculptures. In 1801, Lord Elgin, then ambassador to the Turkish government, had chunks of the frieze sawn off and shipped to England, where they were subsequently seized by Parliament and sold to the British Museum to help pay off his debts.

The film industry of Hollywood, moreover, rose alongside the oil and aeronautics industries that transformed Southern California. In this book, Brian Jacobson traces the surprising and inextricable connections between extractive industries and cinema, developing new ways to read films in light of the typically unseen material practices out of which they are built. The Cinema of Extractions explores the ties between the worlds of movies and the materials that make movies possible and between the industries that make movies and the industries that use movies to reshape the world. Jacobson retells the history of cinema through the lens of extraction, considering its roots as a material form and its use as a tool for corporate and industrial world making. He brings together the material and industrial history of cinema with close formal analyses of films that depict extractive processes, juxtaposing early films and classics such as The Treasure of the Sierra Madre with industrial films made by companies like Shell Oil. Linking film and media studies with the energy and environmental humanities, this book models innovative historical and materialist approaches to formal film analysis and proposes a new poetics of industrial cinema.
Pet Sematary
Mostscholarship on Mary Lambert's Pet Sematary (1989) overarchingly focuses on the Stephen King novel (1983), and tends strongly towards housing the story within the Gothic literary tradition. The film itself is often absent from considerations of North American horror cinema of the 1980s, and from wider horror scholarship in general. This Devil's Advocate stands as a corrective, and provides a holistic analysis – textual, contextual, and industrial – of the film, in order to properly situate it as an important entry into the history of horror cinema. This book joins a growing body of works – both journalistic and academic – that aim to revisit older films in order to call attention to and/or redress the gendered imbalance in our written horror histories. McMurdo charges Pet Sematary with several contributions to the horror genre: as an important entry within the tradition of “grief horror”; as a horror film that both adheres to and defies the generic conventions of its historical context, one both engaged with and respondent to its time of creation; as a film that changed the fortunes of the cinematic Stephen King “brand” on the cusp of a new decade. Pet Sematary is the highest grossing horror film directed by a woman in cinematic history, and it stands as a story that we keep returning to – as seen by the 1992 sequel, the 2019 remake, and a forthcoming prequel. Pet Sematary’s modern relevance and importance to genre history then, is manifold, and this book argues it is past time for its reconsideration as a classic of horror cinema.
Slavné vily Prahy 6 - Střešovice
Publikace připravená nakladatelstvím FOIBOS BOOKS Slavné vily Prahy 6 – Střešovice představuje další segment moderní vilové zástavby, soustředěný po Osadě Baba, Hanspaulce a Bubenči na jednu významnou část Prahy 6 – Střešovice. Tato bezesporu obdivuhodná enkláva rezidenčního bydlení má zároveň jednu specifickou vlastnost svého vývoje, která je dána nejenom základní úvahou, kdy od samotného začátku byla v plánech města určena pro rezidenční bydlení, ale především vypsanou soutěží na zahradní město, jejíž výsledky byly následně uvedeny v život regulačními plány a skvělou architekturou. To ale nebyla jediná specifická vlastnost tohoto území. Na rozdíl od Hanspaulky, či především Bubenče, vyznačující se převahou okázalých vilových objektů, bylo záměrem vytvořit zde zahradní město, složené z domků, dvojdomků či řadových domů nikoli luxusního, okázalého formátu, ale v principu dvou-, tří- a čtyřpokojových, navíc budované stavebními družstvy, a tudíž dostupné především úřednické vrstvě zaměstnanců státních či veřejných institucí. Právě poměrně přísná pravidla, jež do jisté míry kopírovala takto zakládané útvary v zahraničí podle teorie a praxe Ebenezera Howarda, vtiskla celé čtvrti nezaměnitelný charakter, jejž v jiných, takto koncipovaných čtvrtích nenajdeme. O celé soutěži a výstavbě z toho vzniklých domů se čtenář dočte velmi podrobně v následujících kapitolách. I přes tuto závažnou část stavebního vývoje katastrálního území Střešovic nelze opominout individuální vilovou zástavbu, která, ostatně jako i v jiných čtvrtích Prahy 6, přináší důležité informace nejenom o významných či někdy méně známých až neznámých architektech, ale především zajímavá curricula stavebníků, jež jsou mnohdy vyloženě objevná. Tyto úctyhodné osobnostní profily, v převážné většině prvorepublikové, jsou součástí jednotlivých hesel, věnovaných známým, ale i méně známým stavbám a tvoří stěžejní část knihy. Kniha pochopitelně není soupisem, což ani nemůže být, vzhledem k počtu vil, jež se v daném katastru nacházejí. Jsou však vybrané většinou podle známých jmen architektů a s ohledem na urbanistické, ale také kulturní či politické souvislosti. Sluší se připomenout, že se ve Střešovicích nacházejí ikonické stavby, ke kterým patří dnes již světoznámá architektura Müllerovy vily od Adolfa Loose a Karla Lhoty, stejně jako Traubova vila od neméně slavného architekta Bruno Paula.

From the renowned High Line in New York City to the upcoming V&A East Storehouse in London to some of their earliest projects like the Blur building designed for the 2002 Swiss Expo, DS+R explores alternative strategies in space-making that engage and surprise on a global scale.
Designed by DS+R as a pair of structurally conjoined volumes, this monograph invites readers to bridge different modes of production and reconsider the limits of architecture. The unique binding allows each volume to be read individually or in parallel by unfolding the book at the spine. Special crossover layouts link the two volumes with shared obsessions.
The monograph features layouts by design consultancy 2x4, with photography by Iwan Baan and Matthew Monteith amongst other photographers. História v móde - Dámske odevné trendy v 19. storočí
Predkladaná publikácia vychádza z dlhoročného výskumu odevnej kultúry, ktorý sa realizoval v pamäťových inštitúciách na Slovensku. Téma je reflektovaná vo väzbe na vývoj módy vo svete a na vybrané dobové myšlienkové trendy, ktoré sa odrážali na dámskom odievaní v 19. storočí. Zameraná je najmä na afinitu voči minulosti, ktorá je v odevnej móde tohto storočia výrazná a čitateľná. Kniha je rozdelená na päť kapitol. Prvá sa stručne venuje teoretickým východiskám skúmania a interpretácie módnych odevov. V druhej je charakterizovaný fenomén módnej novinky, ktorý sa v 19. storočí výrazne zdynamizoval a vytvoril módny diktát – módne sa obliekať bolo synonymom civilizovanosti. Na módnych novinkách od konca 18. do začiatku 20. storočia bol čitateľný pozitívny vzťah k minulosti, ktorý priblíži tretia kapitola zameraná na historizmy v odievaní v kontexte estetických a umeleckých trendov. Štvrtá kapitola upozorní na fakt, že o oživenie minulosti sa usilovali aj protagonisti takzvanej reformy odevu a remesla. Kritizovali mainstreamovú dámsku módu, ktorá deformovala ženské telo korzetmi a krinolínami. Na šírení historizmov sa spolupodielali aj koncepty národného odevu. Vzťah k národu a vlasti bol komunikovaný aj prostredníctvom oblečenia, ktoré malo v tomto storočí nielen emocionálnu, ale aj politickú funkciu. Na to poukáže piata kapitola. Text je doplnený početnými obrázkami – reprodukciami dobových portrétov, fotografií, módnych grafík a ilustrácií, ako aj odevov z 19. storočia, používaných a zachovaných na území Slovenska.
České spotřební pohádky
Kniha je průvodcem stoletou historií lidových i umělých pohádek ve službách spotřebního průmyslu.
Vypráví o rytířích, kteří zachránili království zázračným mýdlem, o princeznách, vysvobozených ze zakletí vůní koblih smažených na margarínu, o chudých dívkách, z nichž se staly královny, protože dokázaly připravit tu nejlahodnější žitnou kávu, nebo o udatných bojovnících, ukrytých v každé láhvi Karotely. Obrázkové kartičky, lístečky a drobné sešitky vydávaly soukromé firmy v rakousko-uherské monarchii i státní podniky socialistického Československa. Pestré tiskoviny děti fascinovaly, i když nabízely jen zhuštěné verze klasických vyprávění nebo naivní texty psané na míru konkrétnímu zboží, které přímo ve vyprávění nahrazovalo tradiční kouzelné předměty.
Reklamní a propagační pohádky, ilustrované populárními umělci i neškolenými anonymními kreslíři, patří k výrazným kulturním fenoménům dvacátého století. Ovlivňovaly představivost několika generací, pomáhaly prodávat průmyslové výrobky, ale nesloužily jen obchodníkům. Snažily se také vychovávat: poučovaly děti o hygienických zásadách a racionální výživě, vysvětlovaly jim výhody pojištění, význam spoření i sběru surovin. Z veřejného prostoru zmizely až po pádu komunistické diktatury, kdy je smetl příval elektronických technologií a s nimi spojených nových trendů zábavního a reklamního průmyslu.
Jean-Michel Basquiat: Engadin

Though most often associated with New York, Jean-Michel Basquiat had a strong connection to Switzerland, which began in 1982 with his first exhibition at Galerie Bruno Bischofberger in Zurich. Throughout the 1980s, he returned several times, travelling to St. Moritz and the Engadin region.
This new book examines the artist's relationship with the country and is published on the occasion of the exhibition 'Basquiat Engadin' at Hauser & Wirth St. Moritz. It was in Switzerland that Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and Francesco Clemente began to work on their collaborations, marking a significant turning point in Basquiat's artistic practice.
Featuring an essay by curator Dr. Dieter Buchhart, this publication documents a unique body of work that captures the artist's impressions of the Swiss Alpine landscape and culture through the lens of his iconic visual language.
Behind the Yoi
Myron Cope was the color commentator for Pittsburgh Steelers radio broadcasts from 1970 to 2005, the second-longest-serving team broadcaster in NFL history. At the peak of his popularity, an estimated 50 percent of Steeler fans turned down the volume on their TVs so they could listen to the radio as Cope, in his one-of-a-kind scratchy, raspy voice, barked out phrases like “Yoi” and “Okle-dokle,” often fueled by bursts of excitability and his own beautiful brand of homerism. About his voice, Cope said, “Mine isn’t a broadcaster’s voice; it tends to cut through concrete.” Cope helped forge the unbreakable bond between the city of Pittsburgh and its football team. His evening talk show, one of the first sports talk programs in the nation, dominated its time slot for more than twenty years, and he became the first pro football announcer elected to the National Radio Hall of Fame. Born in Pittsburgh to parents of Lithuanian Jewish ancestry, Cope attended the University of Pittsburgh and became a journalist. Though he forged a successful career writing for magazines like Sports Illustrated, football fans grew to know Cope far more through the airwaves. Co-namer of the Immaculate Reception, he also created the Terrible Towel, the flag of Steelers Nation, when in 1975 he urged fans to bring gold towels to wave at a playoff game against the Baltimore Colts. Behind the scenes the Terrible Towel took on a deeper personal meaning, as Cope eventually assigned all royalties from the towels to the facility where his son, who was born with brain damage and never learned to speak, still resides. Throughout his life Cope, who passed away in 2008, raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for children with disabilities. Using Cope’s own papers, correspondence, and tapes, plus interviews with friends and family, Dan Joseph and Elizabeth Cope, Myron’s daughter, paint the first three-dimensional portrait of the creative, many-faceted man whom Pittsburghers still hold in high esteem and close to their hearts.
Dennis Morris - Life + Music
A career retrospective on one of the all-time great photographers of both music and black culture, Dennis Morris. When we think of the trailblazing photographer Dennis Morris’s work, music is right there. Morris’s adventures in the 1970s reggae and punk scene laid the groundwork for a six-decade career.
It all began with Bob Marley: Morris doorstepped Marley in his early teens while skipping school and went on to capture much of Marley’s tour, which launched his career as a music photographer. He later became the official photographer for the Sex Pistols, and for John Lydon’s next project, Public Image Limited, Morris was art director and designer as well as taking iconic images for the band. He captured the greats of reggae and roots music, from Lee 'Scratch' Perry to Toots and Jimmy Cliff, forming friendships with many of the acts.
Morris's documentary and street photography work, with roots in his experiences as a Black teenager in 1970s Britain, bring us visionary projects that explore race, politics and cultural identity. From the miner's strike to squat protests, from civil rights organizations to pop-up studio portraits, his work was a reckoning with his new home, capturing eccentricity and individual spirits with his camera. Edited by Laurie Hurwitz, this book unfolds in two electrifying parts: the first unravels Morris’s lens on race, culture and identity in 1970s Britain, while the second pulses with encounters with music legends like Patti Smith, Gregory Isaacs, The Stone Roses and Radiohead.
With contributions from agnes B and Sean O’Hagan, the book will delight photography fans and music lovers alike. It includes previously unseen images, and is supported by an internationally touring exhibition, presenting Morris’s influential work in depth for the first time.

British photographer Miles Aldridge has developed an editorial style that is both couture and chromatic but also surreal. He is influenced by the films of Federico Fellini and David Lynch and the photography of Richard Avedon, as well as the album covers and book designs created by his father, Alan Aldridge. As one of Aldridge’s own inspirations, David Lynch, once said of his work: “Miles sees a color-coordinated, graphically pure, hard-edged reality.” This latest issue of Toiletpaper sequences a selection of Aldridge’s glamorous and elaborate mise-en-scene images in a palette of vibrant acidic hues.
Soho on Screen
Despite Soho’s rich cultural history, there remains an absence of work on the depiction of the popular neighbourhood in film. Soho on Screen provides one of the first studies of Soho within post-war British cinema. Drawing upon historical, cultural and urban studies of the area, this book explores twelve films and theatrically released documentaries from a filmography of over one hundred Soho set productions. While predominantly focusing on low-budget, exploitation films which are exemplars of British and international filmmaking, Young also offers new readings of star and director biographies, from Laurence Harvey to Emeric Pressburger, and in so doing enlivens discussion on filmmaking in a time and place of intense social transformation, technological innovation and growing permissiveness.

New TikTok trend: What would you advise your younger self? Jak vypadá dívka? Jak má vypadat žena? A jak se to pozná? Vizuální umělkyně Magdaléna Kašparová pracuje se zápisky ze svého dospívání podobně jako s obrazovými kolážemi. Primárně nejde o psaní, ale o shromáždění stop určité fáze života. Deníkové záznamy, „dopísky“ nebo esemesky vylovené z paměti starého mobilu nás od pubertální zkratkovitosti, naivity či kýčovitosti vedou k prožité bolesti. Hlavním tématem je anorexie. Magdaléna Kašparová (nar. 1993) je multimediální umělkyně, absolventka Akademie výtvarných umění v Praze. Ve své tvorbě se obrací k osobní paměti, s níž pracuje prostřednictvím (kompulzivně shromažďovaných) dobových artefaktů, popkulturních trendů, ale také dobově příznačných komunikačních kanálů (SMS, MMS, facebook, snapchat). Využívá přitom prostředků remediace a mediální archeologie. V autorských videích jako My 00’s Diary (2020) nebo Storytime (2021) přejímá konvence vlogu; projekt Osobní archeologie prezentovala formou site-specific instalace i webové stránky. V připravované knize Hlavně se těším na sny se prostřednictvím textových záznamů a obrazových koláží vrací ke své zkušenosti s poruchou příjmu potravy, kvůli níž byla hospitalizována v nemocnici v Motole.
