In the 1950s and '60s, an underground network of transgender women, gender nonconforming people, and men who dressed as women found refuge at a modest house in the Catskills, New York. Known as Casa Susanna, the house provided a safe place to express their true selves and live for a few days as they had always dreamed?dressed as and living as women without fear of being incarcerated or institutionalized for their self-expression.
Casa Susanna opens up that now-lost world. The photographs?mostly discovered by chance in a New York flea market in 2004?chronicle the experiences of these women in states of relaxation, experimentation, connection, and joy. All of this was made possible by Susanna Valenti who?on her own journey toward womanhood?created Casa Susanna, a protected space where others could do the same. Supplementing the images, excerpts from the magazine Transvestia record a different kind of space where those who had been outcast by a rigidly binary society could connect.
The people who came to Casa Susanna found a space where they could explore and celebrate their own and each other’s femininity, as they could not elsewhere. Their creations are also a reminder that there were, and still are, many ways to explore the boundaries of gender.

Ruth Orkin - Photofile
Ruth Orkin (1921–85) always dreamed of becoming a filmmaker, and although that ambition was thwarted until later in her career, she quickly found other ways of engaging with the world of images. She was given her first camera at the age of ten and by the age of seventeen, she was cycling across America from Los Angeles to New York, documenting her trip in albums of annotated photographs. In the early 1940s she settled in New York, joining the Photo League and making her name with photo stories for major magazines such as Life, Look and This Week.
In images that range from celebrity portraits to bird’s-eye views from her apartment window, from children at play to the experiences of a lone American tourist in Italy, Orkin’s photography always retains a cinematic sense of the passage of time and allows the humanity and charisma of her subjects to shine through.
Yun Hyong-keun / Paris
A contemplative exploration of the work of Yun Hyong-keun, a renowned Korean abstract painter, during a transformative period in the early 1980s
From 1980 to 1982, Yun Hyong-keun resided in Paris, seeking both peace from the violent political turmoil that exploded in South Korea in 1980 and a new, artistic center in which to create work. His brief but illuminating stay in the city became the locus of his freedom of expression.
Yun’s signature abstract compositions engage and transcend Eastern and Western art movements and visual traditions, establishing him as one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century. He is the most prominent figure associated with the Dansaekhwa (monochrome painting) movement, the name given to a group of influential Korean artists from the 1960s and 1970s. Using a restricted palette of ultramarine and umber, Yun created his compositions of monolithic swathes by adding layer upon layer of paint to raw canvas or linen and to hanji (Korean mulberry paper), often applying the next coat before the one below had dried.
Published on the occasion of the artist’s exhibition at David Zwirner, Paris, in 2023, this limited-run cloth-bound catalogue focuses on his paintings and works on hanji made in Paris. In an accompanying text, the art historian Oh Gwangsu considers Yun’s work prior to his move to Paris, particularly the artist’s shift toward his signature works in the 1970s. The writer Mara Hoberman reflects on Yun’s practice and influences upon his arrival in the European capital, including an examination of his more nuanced understanding of the color black, which takes on different meanings in France and Korea.

Luka Brase a jeho parížske denníky - et ses journaux parisiens
Úspešný slovenský výtvarník a svetobežník Luka Brase pred časom absolvoval tvorivé pobyty v známom parížskom Cité International des Arts a po návrate sa stretol s historikom umenia a kurátorom Máriusom Matákom. Obaja si uvedomili, že z množstva pracovného materiálu nie je ideálne pripravovať výstavu, ale aj to, že kým prvotnou úlohou výtvarníka je kresliť a maľovať, tak paralelne je doménou kunsthistorika písať … tak vznikla myšlienka parížskych denníkov, ktoré ako mozaiku zloží svojimi obrazmi Luka Brase, aby „ ich pre neho, cez neho a za neho“ napísal Márius Maták. A VHS-kazetta fekete téglahasábjában van valami titokzatosan diabolikus: mintha egy olyan elátkozott ládika lenne, amiből dzsinneket és démonokat lehet előhívni. Ez a misztikus hatás az egész gyerekkoromat meghatározta. Ezért is volt később, a kétezres években lesújtó azt látni, hogy a nagyobb áruházláncok olyan tempóban próbáltak megszabadulni a készleteiktől, mintha fonnyadt krumpliról lenne szó. A saját szememmel láttam, ahogy a hipermarketben a zöldséges részlegre pakolták a műsoros VHS-eket (emlékszem, ott volt a kupacban például a Dogville is), és kulön mérlegkóddal, kilóra lehetett megvenni a kazettákat, akár a káposztát vagy a tévépaprikát.
Ez a könyv természetesen nem,,csak" a VHS-kazettákról szól, hanem elsősorban azokról a meghatározó filmekről (és filmélményekről), amelyek a kilencvenes évek eklektikus időszakában a generációm ízlését formálták. A huszadik század utolsó évtizedének amerikai filmkultúrája tele volt határfeszegetéssel, újdonsággal és kalandvággyal. Ekkor indultak el olyan, ma is megkerulhetetlen rendezők, mint Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson vagy Christopher Nolan, de Hollywood látképe is sokat változott, többek között olyan filmeknek köszönhetően, mint a Jurassic Park vagy a Titanic, illetve bizonyos műfajok - mint a thriller, a katasztrófafilm vagy a sci-fi - is vérfrissítést kaptak. A VHS gyermekei ebbe az izgalmas, eklektikus filmkultúrába repíti vissza az olvasót.

Na potulkách mladého čarodejníka I,II,III“ je trojčasťový cyklus klavírnych skladieb venovaný mladým “čarodejníkom“ – žiakom ZUŠ, ktorí sa postupne zoznamujú s mágiou zvuku klavíra. Dielo v sebe ukrýva príbeh, počas ktorého čarodejník-klavirista dospieva a učí sa. Skladby od začiatku do konca neustále gradujú technickou aj obsahovou závažnosťou. Preto je aj celkový počet skladieb symbolický – 18, ako vyjadrenie veku dospelosti. Počas svojej púte sa hlavná postava zoznamuje s rôznymi predmetmi a bytosťami, navštevuje nevšedné a magické miesta, podmaňuje si prírodné živly a učí sa rôzne kúzla – ktoré poskytuje notový zápis. Cyklus je naplnený symbolikou, a je tam aj niekoľko skrytých odkazov, ktoré si môžete aj nemusíte všimnúť. Celý príbeh sa príznačne končí súbojom čarodejníckych majstrov. Edvard Munch - Magic of the North
Munch’s pictorial worlds – the initial impetus for modernism
Edvard Munch’s radical modernity in painting was a challenge for his contemporaries. This applied in particular to the art scene in Berlin around 1900 which the Norwegian Symbolist artist influenced profoundly. In return, he received support there and was able to continue to develop his work. The publication is lavishly illustrated and describes knowledgeably the story of Munch and Berlin.
In 1892 the Association of Berlin Artists invited the still-unknown Edvard Munch (1863–1944) to an exhibition. The public was shocked by the colourful, sketch-like pictures. The artist enjoyed the furore and moved to the city on the Spree, where he repeatedly sojourned until 1908. Here he learned the techniques for printed graphics and presented for the first time paintings in several continuous series which would become central to his oeuvre. In Berlin, before long, the concept of the “Magic of the North” (Stefan Zweig) was no longer associated with romantic or naturalistic fjord landscapes, but with Munch’s psychologically concentrated pictorial worlds.
Raumplan a současná architektura / Raumplan and Contemporary Architecture
Kniha se tematicky zaměřuje na tvorbu Adolfa Loose v širších souvislostech, jež vedou až k současnému architektonickému dění. Jednotliví autoři a autorky mezinárodního kolektivu se soustředili jak na jeho ideje a tvorbu, tak na příklady přímých i méně zřejmých návazností na jeho dílo. Hlavním scelujícím prvkem je vazba k prostoru v architektuře, jenž se stal klíčovým bodem architektonického myšlení na konci 19. a na začátku 20. století. Kniha zahrnuje ukázky Loosovy tvorby, dále texty historiků architektury a architektů věnujících se Loosovu dílu dlouhodobě také teoreticky (Hermann Czech, Petr Domanický, Jana Laubová, Christopher Long, Dan Merta, Martina Mertová, Maria Szadkowska, Yoshio Sakurai, Filip Šenk, William Tozer) a praktikujících architektů, kteří s koncepty a idejemi architektonického prostoru pracují a dále je rozvíjejí (Alberto Campo Baeza, Sou Fujimoto, Momoyo Kaijima, Mauricio Pezo and Sofía von Ellrichshausen). Nová publikace, jejíž vznik inicioval spolek Architectura a vydal ji ve spolupráci se společností Akontext a Technickou univerzitou v Liberci, přímo navazuje na online výstavu konanou v omezené podobě v době lockdownu v Galerii Jaroslava Fragnera u příležitosti 150 let od narození Adolfa Loose (10. 12. 1870 v Brně – 23. 8. 1933 Kalksburg u Vídně). Grafiky se opět ujal sochař a grafik Jiří Příhoda.
Ztracený baráky / Lost sites
Monumenty těžkého průmyslu, které v Kladně a jeho okolí zůstaly napospas zubu času, přírodě nebo sběračům kovů. Fotograf Šimon Vejvančický zachytil jejich proměny prostřednictvím unikátních analogových fotografií, u kterých experimentuje s formáty, materiály i fotografickými postupy. Vzniká tak jedinečná umělecká výpověď, která nemůže chybět v knihovnách milovníků fotografie, urbexu nebo českého průmyslového dědictví.

Kniha vyšla k výstave Peter Michal Bohúň (1822 - 1879) - maliar vľúdneho štetca, s podnadpisom Poohliadnutie za dobou, životom a dielom najvýznamnejšieho slovenského výtvarného umelca štúrovskej vlasteneckej generácie, ktorá prebiehala v Liptovskej galérii P. M. Bohúňa od 14.12. 2022 do 26.8.2023. Publikácia je v slovenskom a zároveň v anglickom jazyku.
