A Feljegyzések az odúból című kisregényt általában az életmű fordulópontjaként tartják számon: miután Dosztojevszkij visszatért a fegyencéletből és a száműzetésből, e művében jelentkezett először radikálisan új eszmeiséggel és művészi eljárással. Szembefordult a korabeli "haladó", racionalizmusra és haszonelvűségre építő elképzelésekkel, elbeszélői módszerében pedig ekkor mutatkozott meg először kiforrottan az ún. polifonikus eljárás.
Az Egy nevetséges ember álma című elbeszélés a Dosztojevszkij-életmű kései időszakához tartozik. Alcíme: Fantasztikus elbeszélés, a mű tartalmának utópisztikus jellegére utal.
