Proposing a radical reconceptualization of deconstruction and nothingness The first of two volumes exploring Jacques Derrida's prefiguration of speculative realism, The Nothing and Nothingness examines the transcendental naturalism of Ray Brassier and Iain Hamilton Grant and the speculative materialism of Quentin Meillassoux. Philippe Lynes proposes nothing less than a radical reconceptualization of deconstruction as a call to bear witness to nothingness: let the earth be the earth, let nature be nature, and leave them to their reality, secrecy, and withdrawal without us. Dearth: Deconstruction After Speculative Realism argues that Derrida's seminars on Martin Heidegger and Maurice Blanchot, La Chose (The Thing), anticipated many of the philosophical, literary, and aesthetic questions animating speculative realism today: an anti-anthropocentric critique of Kantian correlationism an overcoming of the apocalyptic nihilism of extinction through a deeper, affirmative habituation to nothingness and poignant reflections on the literary and poetic aspects of living and dying in impossible worlds. His is an anti-correlationist plea that resounds now more urgently than ever.
Language, Madness, and Desire
As a transformative thinker of the twentieth century, whose work spanned all branches of the humanities, Michel Foucault had a complex and profound relationship with literature. And yet this critical aspect of his thought, because it was largely expressed in speeches and interviews, remains virtually unknown to even his most loyal readers. This book brings together previously unpublished transcripts of oral presentations in which Foucault speaks at length about literature and its links to some of his principal themes: madness, language and criticism, and truth and desire. The associations between madness and language — and madness and silence — preoccupy Foucault in two 1963 radio broadcasts, presented here, in which he ranges among literary examples from Cervantes and Shakespeare to Diderot, before taking up questions about Artaud's literary correspondence, 'lettres de cachet', and the materiality of language. In his lectures on the relations among language, the literary work, and literature, he discusses Joyce, Proust, Chateaubriand, Racine, and Corneille, as well as the linguist Roman Jakobson. What we know as literature, Foucault contends, begins with the Marquis de Sade, to whose writing — particularly La Nouvelle Justine and Juliette — he devotes a full two-part lecture series focusing on notions of literary self-consciousness. This volume makes clear the importance of literature to Foucault's thought and it is an indispensable text for anyone interested in his work and intellectual development.
Contemporary Aristotelian Ethics
This volume provides a thorough introduction to three of the twentieth century's most influential proponents of Aristotle's moral philosophy. Arthur Madigan's Contemporary Aristotelian Ethics examines the work of Alasdair MacIntyre, Martha Nussbaum, and Robert Spaemann in the context of twentieth-century Anglo-American moral philosophy. By surveying the ways in which these three philosophers appropriate Aristotle, Madigan illustrates two important points: first, that the most pressing problems in contemporary moral philosophy can be addressed using the Aristotelian tradition and, second, that the Aristotelian tradition does not speak with one voice. The Philosopher’s Ring—Wagner as Thinker and Dramatist

Few figures of the nineteenth century were more influential than Richard Wagner, and few works of art have the scope and historical significance of The Ring of the Nibelung. Speech Begins After Death
In 1968, Michel Foucault agreed to a series of interviews with critic Claude Bonnefoy, which were to be published in book form. Bonnefoy wanted a dialogue with Foucault about his relationship to writing rather than about the content of his books. The project was abandoned, but a transcript of the initial interview survived and is published here. In this brief and lively exchange, Foucault reflects on how he approached the written word throughout his life, from his school days to his discovery of the pleasure of writing. Všechny rysy tohoto fenomenálního pole jsou poté představeny synteticky, díky čemuž vyvstanou některé nové úkoly pro současnou fenomenologickou analýzu, a to včetně problému, který byl prvořadý pro Husserla: problému fenomenologické metaetiky či aplikované fenomenologie. Obětování jakožto dar smrti v sobě propojuje víru, smrt, a náboženskou zkušenost Druhého, ale také odpovědnost, odpuštění, svobodu, péči o duši či tajemství. Derrida se zde opírá především o Kierkegaardovu Bázeň a chvění a Patočkův rozvrh genealogie náboženství a geneze křesťanské subjektivity z Kacířských esejů. Text je však hojně inspirován také Heideggerem, Lévinasem i literárním dílem Melvillovým, Baudelairovým či Kafkovým. Esej je bohatý na jazykové hry, podtrhující paralelní hru aporií a paradoxů, kterých Derrida s oblibou užívá. Toto důmyslné pohrávání si s jazykem odkrývá další a další dimenze smyslu sledovaných pojmů a témat. Specifická textura tak vyzývá k výpravám za rámec řečeného, což je také autorův záměr. The Birth of Tragedy / Unpublished Basel Writings (Winter 1869/70–Fall 1873)
During his early years in Basel, as professor of classical philology, Nietzsche develops an original understanding of ancient Greek poetry, philosophy, and culture, alongside a biting critique of contemporary German society and a call for its reform. These years see him publish his first book, The Birth of Tragedy, where tragic drama is understood as the harmonizing of Apollonian and Dionysian drives. In it, Nietzsche traces the rise of tragedy as an art form, diagnoses its demise at the hands of Socratic rationalism, and champions its revival in Wagnerian music drama, as part of a larger project of German national renewal. The unpublished texts gathered here allow us to see The Birth of Tragedy within the larger context of Nietzsche's concerns at this time and chart the compositional and interpretive development of that first book while revealing some roads not taken. Was Moses Jewish or an Egyptian? The question undermines any simple ascription of identity, highlighting the limits of these categories. Said suggests that such an unresolved, nuanced sense of identity might, if embodied in political reality, form the basis for a new understanding between Jews and Palestinians. In contrast, Israel's relentless march towards an exclusively Jewish state denies any sense of a more complex, inclusive past.

But what does it mean to create a child? Is this decision always justified? Does anyone really have the moral right to create another person? In Begetting, Mara van der Lugt attempts to fill in the moral background of procreation. Drawing on both philosophy and popular culture, van der Lugt does not provide a definitive answer on the morality of having a child; instead, she helps us find the right questions to ask.Most of the time, when we talk about whether to have children, what we are really talking about is whether we want to have children. Van der Lugt shows why this is not enough. To consider having children, she argues, is to interrogate our own responsibility and commitments, morally and philosophically and also personally. What does it mean to bring a new creature into the world, to decide to perform an act of creation? What does it mean to make the decision that life is worth living on behalf of a person who cannot be consulted? These questions are part of a conversation we should have started long ago. Van der Lugt does not ignore the problematic aspects of procreation—ethical, environmental and otherwise. But she also acknowledges the depth and complexity of the intensely human desire to have a child of our own blood and our own making.

Světu dosud neznámý zhořelecký švec Jakub Böhme tehdy ve svých pětadvaceti letech zažil osvícení při pohledu na cínovou nádobu. Spatřil „nejniternější jádro či středisko skryté přírody a mohl se dívat všemu tvorstvu takřka do srdce a do nejniternější přirozenosti“.
„… otevřela se mi brána a já jsem v jediné čtvrthodině spatřil a poznal víc, než kdybych byl strávil mnoho let na vysokých školách. Spatřil a poznal jsem jsoucnost všech jsoucností, počátek a původ tohoto světa a všech stvoření skrze božskou Moudrost. Poznal jsem a spatřil v sobě samém tři světy: svět božský, andělský či rajský, temný, odkud počíná příroda k ohni a tento zevní viditelný svět jakožto výtvor a zrození neboli vyslovenou jsoucnost z obou těch vnitřních duchovních světů.
Spatřil jsem a poznal veškeré jsoucno ve zlu a dobru, kterak jedno pochází z druhého a jak matka je rodičkou, a tu jsem se nejen velice podivil, ale nadto jsem byl naplněn radostí.“
Jacob Böhme (1574–1624) byl filozof, mystik, švec a obchodník ze Zhořelce a jeho přínos pro naši kulturu a filozofii je enormní. Zaujal Jana Amose Komenského a nepřímo ovlivnil například Johanna Wolfganga Goetha a mnoho dalších.
Úvod do platónských studií
Monografie předkládá v českém prostředí dosud chybějící komplexní přehled o platónském bádání od konce 17. století po současné trendy, včetně detailních rozborů rozhodujících textů klíčových autorů, relevantních pro studovanou problematiku. Součástí je i v mezinárodním měřítku výjimečný přehled o domácí, poměrně bohatě zastoupené platónské scéně, která je představena v návaznosti na schématické rozdělení hlavních tendencí v bádání mezinárodním. Autorovým hlediskem při výkladu celého oboru jsou hermeneutická východiska jednotlivých škol a společné momenty v metodologii každého z interpretů.
Kniha má dvě hlavní části: první představuje novodobé bádání cca do roku 2000 a druhá se pak zaměřuje na hermeneutická východiska a hlavní trendy u současných badatelů. Součástí této druhé části je i sám autor, jeho sebereflexe jakožto platónského interpreta i jeho snaha nabídnout čtenáři možné východisko z hlavních obtíží platónského bádání. Proto je značná pozornost věnována analýze velmi rozšířeného platónského perspektivismu. Právě na jeho základě navrhuje Boháček svůj molekulární perspektivismus jako určitý pokus zohlednit přínos moderního bádání a zároveň pokračovat v současné perspektivistické metodologii.
Příspěvky k dějinám marxismu
Kniha editora Petra Kužela přináší první reprezentativní výbor textů filosofa Lubomíra Sochora (1925–1986). Shrnuje texty z různých období jeho tvůrčí činnosti a nabízí průřez takřka všemi tématy, jimiž se tento významný, ale nedoceněný českých myslitel zabýval. Vedle dříve publikovaných studií či esejů jsou do přítomného svazku zařazeny texty, které buď dosud nevyšly tiskem (zpravidla kvůli zásahům tehdejší cenzury), anebo byly publikovány pouze v exilových periodikách či zahraničních odborných publikacích, a jsou tedy obtížně dostupné. Každý z těchto textů dosvědčuje Sochorův otevřený a nedogmatický přístup k marxismu. Jeho analýzy různých, v dějinách marxismu samého často potlačovaných či opomíjených marxistických koncepcí, stejně jako Sochorova pronikavá kritika tzv. „reálného socialismu“ jsou cenným příspěvkem k historii emancipačního myšlení. Dokazují, že zdánlivě zapomenuté či marginalizované myšlenky mohou inspirovat a obohacovat soudobou i budoucí kritickou teorii společnosti.

We need to err on the side of caution, yet it''s often far from clear what ''erring on the side of caution'' should mean in practice. When are we going too far? When are we not doing enoug? he Edge of Sentience presents a comprehensive precautionary framework designed to help us reach ethically sound, evidence-based decisions despite our uncertainty. The book is packed with specific, detailed proposals intended to generate discussion and debate. At no point, however, does it offer any magic tricks to make our uncertainty go away. Otázka smrti je stará jako filosofie sama. Přesto se nás přední myslitelé tradice od Augustina po Derridu snaží přesvědčit o tom, že o smrti přemýšlet nelze. Kniha Navždy zavřít oči problematizuje tento závěr. Ondřej Kvapil formuluje nevyřčené premisy, na kterých teze o nepochopitelnosti smrti stojí, a přitom ukazuje nejen to, že o smrti přemýšlet můžeme, nýbrž také to, že o smrti, kterou nelze zažít, představit si, ani přemoci vůlí, můžeme jen a pouze přemýšlet - anebo jí zemřít. Za své východisko si bere klasický - trochu pozapomenutý a zároveň mrazivě aktuální - výklad nepochopitelnosti a nesmyslnosti smrti od Jeana-Paula Sartra, přičemž polemizuje s jeho tradičním čtením a nabízí čtení nové. Toto čtení vymaňuje Sartra ze schematické komparace s Heideggerem, demonstruje skrytou souvislost jeho úvah o smrti s těmi Husserlovými a především neudržitelnost velmi rozšířené a dlouho zastávané teze o Sartrově epikureismu. Následně autor analyzuje jeden po druhém Sartrovy argumenty pro nepochopitelnost smrti, vyvrací je a předvádí, o čem vlastně přemýšlíme, když přemýšlíme o smrti: totiž o svém životě samém a o jeho konečném čase, o světě, na kterém se tento život odehrává, a o těch, se kterými tento svět po konečný čas života svého i jejich sdílíme, a také nevyhnutelně o podstatě toho všeho - tedy o otázkách filosofických.
