Celebrating Japan's unique print culture of monsters and ghouls
During the Pax Tokugawa—Japan's 300-year period of prosperity and peace from 1600 to 1900—epic tales about the wars of the past circulated and were adapted into spine-tingling games. One Hundred Candles, in which a group of friends swap scary stories on the eve of a full moon in the summer, is perhaps the most famous of the genre; legend dictates that the storytelling culminates in the appearance of a spirit. Yokai follows the spirit of this macabre game, sharing 200 works of Japanese mythological imagery from the 18th and 19th centuries. The book's collation of prints, books, clothes, weapons, swords, samurai armor, 77 precious netsuke and a 33-foot scroll coalesce into a portrait of Japan's storied—and sometimes spooky—past.

Předmětem zájmu této knihy jsou vzpomínky a část sbírky autogramů Jana Slánského (1889–1981), správce Muzea Aloise Jiráska v Hronově, osoby v maximální možné míře aktivní ve veřejném životě, disponující v rámci svých možností rozsáhlou sítí společenských kontaktů a nepopíratelným kulturním rozhledem. Tyto vlastnosti byly navíc podmíněny a umocněny členstvím v místní sokolské jednotě a především prostředím Hronova, spojeného neoddělitelně s osobou spisovatele a jedné ze symbolických postav protirakouského odboje, Aloise Jiráska. Slánského sbírka autografů představuje svébytný a výjimečný dokument ilustrující osobní vztah svého tvůrce k českému protirakouskému odboji a vzniku Československa. Jako základní kameny domácí části české cesty vedoucí k 28. říjnu 1918 zřetelně vystupují Manifest spisovatelů z května 1917 a působení skupiny osob označovaných po skončení první světové války jako Maffie. Slánským aktivně přijímaný a čile rozvíjený narativ let 1914–1918 byl zcela v souladu s hlavním meziválečným výkladovým proudem reprezentovaným pracemi Edvarda Beneše, T. G. Kniha Na okrajích umění problematizuje a novým způsobem pojímá všeobecně sdílenou představu, podle níž svět umění tvoří oblast nejen odlišnou, nýbrž protikladnou běžnému, každodennímu světu. Výchozím tématem knihy je popis soudního sporu z let 1927 a 1928 mezi francouzsko-rumunským modernistickým sochařem Constantinem Brâncusim a vládou Spojených států amerických. Celní úřad Spojených států tehdy odmítl přiznat některým Brâncusiho sochám pro jejich neobvyklý zjev status uměleckých děl a odepřel jim tímto bezcelní odbavení. Při této události se zdánlivě oddělené světy umění a běžného života zničehonic prolnuly a vyvolaly tak zajímavé otázky ohledně jejich vztahu. Jakou roli hraje při oceňování uměleckých děl definice umění, kterou více či méně vědomě předpokládáme? Jakou roli při hodnocení uměleckých děl hrají pocity, emoce či nálady? Jsou umělecká díla k něčemu užitečná, a pokud ano, k čemu? Odhaluje, v čem spočívá podstata a kouzlo zvukového umění, a dochází k závěru, že i v současném mediálním světě má rozhlasová hra své nezastupitelné místo.

Rotrekl
Malíř a ilustrátor Teodor Rotrekl (1923-2004) dosud nepatří ke klasikům českého výtvarného umění. Známý je spíše jako ilustrátor vědeckofantastické literatury. Rotrekl byl přitom prvním domácím umělcem, který veřejně vystavil prostorovou asambláž, začal kombinovat malbu s fotografií a experimentoval s technikou pop artové obrazové montáže. Jeho světonázor se vymykal dnešnímu vnímání hodnot českého poválečného umění, spjatého s tvorbou vymezující se vůči komunistickému režimu. Patřil k umělcům, kteří se 50. a 60. letech ztotožňovali s vládnoucími politickými ideály. Po kritice okupace Československa v roce 1968 sice nemohl vystavovat, přesvědčeným komunistou ale zůstal až do smrti. Monografie představuje celek tvorby Teodora Rotrekla, včetně užitého umění. Současně analyzuje prostředí kultury socialistického Československa. Přibližuje dobové funkce populárně naučné ilustrace, ideologický rozměr vědecké fantastiky a rozebírá vztah mezi Rotreklovou tvorbou a globálním pop artem.
Tomáš Pospiszyl se zabývá uměním 20. a 21. století. Zajímá se o vztah západní a východní neoavantgardy, o umění socialistického Československa a o vztah mezi filmovým a výtvarným uměním. V současnosti vede katedru teorie a dějin umění na Akademii výtvarných umění v Praze.
