Kengo Kuma: Complete Works 1988-Today
After Tadao Ando, Toyo Ito, and Fumihiko Maki, Kengo Kuma has breathed renewed vigor and lightness into Japanese architecture. Departing from the modernist skyscraper of the 20th century, Kuma traveled through his native Japan to develop a truly sustainable approach, translating local craftsmanship and resources into site-specific, timely buildings. Informed by tradition, and with both feet firmly planted in the present, this "materialist" heralds a new tactile architecture marked by its engaging surfaces, innovative structures, and fluid forms, reconnecting people with the physicality of a house. Kuma's objective, above all else, is "just to respect the culture and environment of the place where I am working."
To this end, Kuma shaped the China Academy of Art's Folk Art Museum partially from discarded roof tiles; created a Chapel out of birch and moss in Nagano; and worked with local craftsmen to sculpt the V&A Dundee into a twisted, layered reflection of the Scottish coastal cliffs. With an extraordinary sensitivity for space, light, and texture, Kuma reveals unexpected qualities in materials, finding the weightlessness of stone in Chokkura Plaza and the softness of aluminum in the thatched roof of the Yangcheng Lake Tourist Transportation Center.
More recently, the architect brought his philosophy to the Japan National Stadium built for the Olympic Games, originally planned for 2020. Kuma has said the stadium could be "the catalyst that will transform Tokyo back from a concrete city. I want it to set an example that will help alter the direction of Japanese architectural design."
In this XXL-sized monograph with some 500 illustrations spanning photographs, sketches, and plans, Kuma guides us through his entire career to date, detailing milestone projects as well as ongoing works.

The Picasso Connection
Without a doubt, Picasso is one of the most important and versatile artistic personalities of the twentieth century. Building for Hope
Marwa al Sabouni was a little-known architect, living in battle-ravaged Homs, unable to practice her profession as the buildings and the lives around her and across Syria were reduced to rubble. Rather than flee her country, like so many of her compatriots, she remained, committed to the belief that the multilayered and multifaceted society she grew up in was worth rebuilding. She turned her fierce intelligence to chronicling how her city and country were undone through decades of architectural mismanagement and mistakes.
The result was The Battle for Home. Published in 2016, the book and her story attracted the attention of international news media and received critical acclaim around the world. She became a TED fellow; some suggested she be nominated for architecture's highest honour, the Pritzker Prize.

Sto let jednoho stromu
V listopadu 1951 bylo v Národní galerii založeno oddělení orientálního umění, jehož přednostou se krátce nato stal indolog Lubor Hájek. V průběhu následujících desetiletí se v jeho sbírkách podařilo shromáždit přes deset tisíc předmětů asijského umění a představit je na desítkách krátkodobých výstav.
S nebývalým zaujetím připravená publikace Sto let jednoho stromu je věnována Luboru Hájkovi k nedožitým stým narozeninám. Podrobně popisuje okolnosti vzniku sbírek asijského umění před druhou světovou válkou a přibližuje okamžiky založení orientálního oddělení Národní galerie počátkem padesátých let. Ukazuje, z jakých zdrojů sbírky orientálního oddělení čerpaly, a představuje osobnosti, které se na jeho zrodu podílely. Vypráví pohnutý příběh dvou dlouhodobých expozic čínského umění v zámku Troja a v Benešově nad Ploučnicí a téměř detektivním způsobem pomocí dobových dokumentů mapuje okolnosti požáru benešovského zámku v roce 1969, který část asijských sbírek zničil. Závěrečné pasáže knihy představují erudovaného odborníka Lubora Hájka jakožto milovníka a znalce asijského umění, jemuž sbírky někdejšího orientálního oddělení do značné míry vděčí za svou podobu a obsah. Publikace tak přináší detailní vhled do procesů fungování i kontextu institucionálního sběratelství asijského umění v Československu v meziválečném a poválečném období.

„Milý Tomáši, píšeš mi melancholicky, že Tvoje knížka o kýči není „politically correct“, že postmodernismus již dávno smazal rozdíl mezi kýčem a uměním, že kýč se stal tak všudypřítomný, že odhalovat ho vypadá jako projev elitismu. Ano, je tomu přesně tak. Mluvit o kýči se stalo neslušné ve chvíli, kdy svět se stal kýčem. Všimni si, že Kafka píše o byrokracii v době, kdy byrokracie je ještě téměř nevinná. Ve chvíli, kdy pohltila zcela naše životy, stala se samozřejmá, a proto neviditelná. Jaromír John napsal román Výbušný zlotvor, kde vypráví o hrůze automobilu; ale v té době jich bylo v Praze velice málo. Chci tím říci toto: fenomén je rozpoznatelný v celé své hrůze jen v době, kdy ještě není rozšířen. Až se rozšíří, stane s čímsi „přirozeným“ (co známe od zrození, s čím počítáme, čemu se nedivíme). Jsme dnes obklopeni kýčem jako nikdy předtím: všude, v televizi, v novinách, v soukromém životě, v politice. I válka je už prezentována (jen se podívej, jak se píše o Sarajevu!) jako kýč. A právě proto, i když Tvá knížka nebude pochopena, je jí zapotřebí víc než kdy jindy. Tvůj Milan"

Theodor Pištěk. Senzační realismus. Sensational Realism
Publikace Senzační realismus dokumentuje ojedinělou Pištěkovu výstavní prezentaci v Alšově jihočeské galerii v Hluboké nad Vltavou, která byla zaměřena výhradně na malířovu hyperrealistickou fázi, s lehkými náznaky přesahu k jeho evropským či americkým druhům. Malíř byl na tomto výstavním projektu představen v pokud možno komplexním přehledu jeho nejznámějších a ikonických děl, které vznikaly zejména od první poloviny 70. let 20. století do první poloviny následné dekády; malíř se však ke svému svébytnému realismu průběžně vracel až do doby nedávné. V kontextu tvorby Theodora Pištěka (nar. 25. října 1932 v Praze) je tak navýsost napínavé srovnání jeho přístupu s americkým hyperrealistou Richardem Estesem, a také s tendencí evropského malířství, které z realismu vycházelo (Jacques Monory, Gerhard Richter, Gérard Gasiorowski) či na něj bezprostředně navázalo (Gottfried Heinvein).
The catalogue Sensational Realism illustrates a unique exhibition of Pištěk’s artwork in the South Bohemian Gallery in Hluboká nad Vltavou, which focused specifically on his hyper-realistic era with a hint of his European and American comrades’ paintings. The painter was introduced in a complex overview by his pivotal and iconic works from the beginning of the 1970s till the first half of the next decade, nevertheless, he was returning to his distinctive realism until recently. In the context of Theodor Pištěk’s (born 25th October 1932 in Prague) work it’s utterly thrilling on the one hand to compare his approach to American hyperrealist Richard Estes, and on the other, to the tendencies of European painting, which are based on realism (Jacques Monory, Gerhard Richter or Gérard Gasiorowski) or they immediately follow up on realism (Gottfried Helnwein).

Tichý, Zrzavý, Lhoták, Born a František Dvořák
Soubor dokumentů o nejzásadnějších tématech a přátelských vztazích historika umění profesora Františka Dvořáka (1920-2015) k legendárním osobnostem Františka Tichého, Jana Zrzavého, Kamila Lhotáka, Adolfa Borna a k fotografovi Václavu Chocholovi, jehož snímky tvoří vizuální páteř svazku.
Vedle textů o díle jmenovaných umělců přináší kniha také příspěvky autorových přátel a kolegů (Jiří T. Kotalík, Rostislav Švácha, Blanka Stehlíková, Petr Ladman, Václav Prošek, Petr Volf, Tomáš Mazal a Jiří Slíva) a v závěru soupisy novoročenek, exlibris a příležitostných tisků, které pro Františka Dvořáka od 50. let do roku 2015 vytvořilo několik desítek výtvarníků. Na obálce je reprodukován portrétní obraz Aleše Lamra z roku 1980.

Stopy k bilanční výstavě Michala Škody (*1962) – umělce solitéra, kreslíře, sochaře, autora místně specifických instalací a kurátora s mezinárodní reputací, který je v jižních Čechách doma, vedou od specifického vnímání prostoru, architektury, krajiny a "místa pro člověka", přes uměleckou transformaci těchto podnětů do vysoko abstrahovaných uměleckých děl. Ty jsou jako stopy individuální tvorby zanechány pro komunikaci s diváky v prostoru Alšovy jihočeské galerie.
Koncepce autorské výstavy rozkrývá některé základní myšlenky a podoby Škodovy dosavadní umělecké cesty, s průhledy do minulosti i do možné budoucnosti. Stopy jsou tu pozůstatky přítomnosti a následky událostí, průsečnice makro a mikro světů, šrámy po střetu vnějších tlaků a vnitřního pnutí, záznamy rytmů a rituálů každodennosti.

Nálady pro deset prstů jsou souborem kratších skladeb určených pro mírně pokročilé klavíristy. Při jejich tvorbě jsem se pokusila zachytit některé z dětských každodenních nálad a převést je do hudební podoby. Všechny skladby opatřeny nahrávkami ve formátu MP3.

Generační konfrontace v linii jak „nahoru“ – rodiče portrétovaných, tak i v linii směrem „dolů“- jejich dcery, synové, event. partneři.
