Theodor Pištěk. Senzační realismus. Sensational Realism
Publikace Senzační realismus dokumentuje ojedinělou Pištěkovu výstavní prezentaci v Alšově jihočeské galerii v Hluboké nad Vltavou, která byla zaměřena výhradně na malířovu hyperrealistickou fázi, s lehkými náznaky přesahu k jeho evropským či americkým druhům. Malíř byl na tomto výstavním projektu představen v pokud možno komplexním přehledu jeho nejznámějších a ikonických děl, které vznikaly zejména od první poloviny 70. let 20. století do první poloviny následné dekády; malíř se však ke svému svébytnému realismu průběžně vracel až do doby nedávné. V kontextu tvorby Theodora Pištěka (nar. 25. října 1932 v Praze) je tak navýsost napínavé srovnání jeho přístupu s americkým hyperrealistou Richardem Estesem, a také s tendencí evropského malířství, které z realismu vycházelo (Jacques Monory, Gerhard Richter, Gérard Gasiorowski) či na něj bezprostředně navázalo (Gottfried Heinvein).
The catalogue Sensational Realism illustrates a unique exhibition of Pištěk’s artwork in the South Bohemian Gallery in Hluboká nad Vltavou, which focused specifically on his hyper-realistic era with a hint of his European and American comrades’ paintings. The painter was introduced in a complex overview by his pivotal and iconic works from the beginning of the 1970s till the first half of the next decade, nevertheless, he was returning to his distinctive realism until recently. In the context of Theodor Pištěk’s (born 25th October 1932 in Prague) work it’s utterly thrilling on the one hand to compare his approach to American hyperrealist Richard Estes, and on the other, to the tendencies of European painting, which are based on realism (Jacques Monory, Gerhard Richter or Gérard Gasiorowski) or they immediately follow up on realism (Gottfried Helnwein).

Archivum shows for the first time in book form over 50 black-and-white prints by leading photographer Kevin Cummins of the band Joy Division.
Cummins, as a young, aspiring photographer from Manchester, had unique access to the band in their very early days, from when they were known as Warsaw to when they later became New Order, after Ian Curtis’ death. Many of these photographs were reproduced by NME and other music magazines in the late 1970s and they helped cement Cummins’ reputation as the greatest music photographer of his generation – subsequently he was made NME’s chief photographer for over ten years.
Archivum includes an exclusive interview with the photographer, Kevin Cummins, which reveals new information about Joy Division, the photographer’s relationship with the band, and Kevin’s techniques for photographing.
The photographic prints (all 10 x 8 inches black-and-whites) are reproduced full size, both front and back, with the photograph’s notes and marks as well as stamps from the music magazines.
This is a unique record of an important archive collection of original photographs of one of the world’s most iconic bands.

100 Symbols That Changed The World looks at the genesis and adoption of the world's most recognizable symbols.
Universal symbols have been used as a form of communication from the Bronze Age, when the dynasties of ancient Egypt began the evolution of the thousand characters used in Egyptian hieroglyphics. In pre-Columbian America the Mayan civilization set out on a similar course, using pictures as a narrative text.
With the adoption of written languages, symbols have come to represent an illustrated shorthand. The dollar sign in America evolved from colonists' trade with the Spanish, and the widespread acceptance of Spanish currency in deals. Merchants' clerks would shorten the repeated entry of "pesos" in their accounts ledgers, which needed to be written with a 'p' and an 's'. A single letter 's' with the vertical stroke of the 'p' was much quicker. Historically correct dollar signs have a single stroke through the 'S'.
Symbols are also used to impart quick, recognizable safety advice. The radio activity symbol was designed in Berkley in 1946 to warn of the dangers of radioactive substances - and following the widespread use of gas masks in WWII, the trefoil symbol echoed the shape of the mask.
There are many symbols of affiliation, not only to religious groups, but support of political causes or even brand loyalty. Symbols are used for identification, military markings and recognition of compatibility. They allow users to convey a large amount of information in a short space, such as the iconography of maps or an electrical circuit diagram. Symbols are an essential part of the architecture of mathematics.
And in the case of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics - the first Games to be held in an Asian country - symbols allowed the organizers to create event signage that wouldn't be lost in translation. The set of Olympic sports pictograms for the Games was a novel solution, and one that was added to in Mexico and Munich.
