Aperture 242: New York
With its vibrant street life, vast media industry, and influence on the fashion world, New York has long been considered the capital of photography. Since last March, though, life in the city has been altered in unthinkable ways due to the Covid-19 health crisis and the protests in support of Black lives.
Aperture's New York issue will be released on the one-year anniversary of the city's shut down due to the Covid-19 crisis. The issue will honor community and public space in the city and highlight the distinct ways in which this city has fostered a vital image culture. Contributions will include Jamel Shabazz's decades-long chronicle of Black life in the city; Deana Lawson's distinct vision of Brooklyn; Vince Aletti on the tradition of the "New York issue" in magazine publishing; a conversation between Philip Montgomery and Kathy Ryan, Director of Photography at The New York Times Magazine; as well as highlights from a range of unique photo archives in the city. Additional contributors may include An-My Le?, Farah Al Qasimi, Ari Macropolous, Ryan McGinley, Irina Rozovksy, Olivia Laing, Jim Jarmusch, among others.

Derek Sayer ve své monumentální knize Praha, hlavní město dvacátého století skládá střípky kulturních dějin Prahy a Československa mezi dvěma světovými válkami, aby ukázal, jak zapadají do mozaiky evropských dějin. Autor si všímá kontaktů Guillaumea Apollinaira, André Bretona, Paula Eluarda a dalších světových surrealistů s Vítězslavem Nezvalem, Karlem Teigem, Toyen, Jindřichem Štýrským, ale i Prahou obecně.
V jednom fragmentu dějin umění se často zrcadlí celá meziválečná situace. Události v Sayerově Praze se jeví jako úryvky z prorockých snů předznamenávajících události evropského či světového významu. Sny avantgardy se v tomto prostoru snadno překlápějí do těch nejhorších nočních můr dvacátého století, a naopak, kruté žerty dějin se z odstupu jeví jako příklady černého humoru doprovázené osvobozujícím smíchem. V Sayerově knize čtenář prochází tkanivem meziválečné Prahy, tak jako spáč ve snu prochází noční krajinou, v níž se mu objevují fragmenty jeho vlastních dějin, jeho zklamání i touhy.

Se zaměřením na tyto roky zkoumá Sayer pražské velkolepé moderní budovy, památky, obrazy, knihy, filmy, opery, výstavy a mnoho dalšího. Praha byla místem, kde se utopické fantazie století opakovaně rozplývaly, a jako taková byla šitá na míru surrealistickému černému humoru André Bretona. Sayer hovoří o tom, jak město produkovalo bezkonkurenční znalce ponuré komedie, od Franze Kafky a Jaroslava Haška po Milana Kunderu a Václava Havla.

Jazzová improvizace
Kniha slouží jako návod pro jazzovou improvizaci. Představuje souhrn improvizačních technik vycházejících z be-bopu, hard-bopu a moderního jazzu inspirovaných velikány, jakými byli John Coltrane, Michael Brecker, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, Jerry Bergonzi a další. Co se týče koncepce tohoto studijního materiálu, je tvořen tak, aby na deskriptivní část s mnoha příklady v zápětí navázal soubor cvičení, jehož praktikováním se hráči mohou upevnit ve zvládání dané improvizační metody a obecně se tak hráčsky zdokonalit.
