Ai Weiwei. Updated Edition
Ai Weiwei is famous for much more than his art. As a champion for the right to free expression and against arbitrary state power, his actions reach far beyond the art world. His work is infused with a deep social and political commitment: when he brings 1,001 Chinese citizens from all classes and regions to Documenta 12, when he strews over 100 million hand-made porcelain sunflower seeds across the Turbine Hall at the Tate Modern, when he creates a frieze of school bags commemorating the many children who fell victim to the tragedy of the Sichuan earthquake, or when he visits the refugee camps of the world to engage with often-ignored individual fates in his film Human Flow. In 2011, Ai was detained for 81 days by the Chinese police for his relentless questioning of authorities, and his passport was taken away. Despite international protests he received it back only in 2015. Finally traveling outside of China again, setting up base in Berlin and lately in Portugal, he has now become a truly global artist, whose work is always informed by his activism and vice versa.
Focusing on the recent decade of art and activism by one of the most outspoken artists of our time, this edition provides TASCHEN’s previous Ai Weiwei monograph with a comprehensive update. Now exploring 40 years of work, the book ranges from the artist’s exile in ’80s New York, through sculptures based in Chinese traditions and craftsmanship after his return to China, to his latest works conceived in Europe: toy-brick mosaics, films, and installations championing human rights. This book is itself a historical document: initially produced as the first in-depth monograph in close collaboration with the artist during a time when he still couldn’t travel abroad, now the same team has reconvened to continue the story. This beautifully illustrated book offers a fresh scholarly appraisal of Frans Hals, more than 30 years since the last large exhibition devoted to his work. Essays cover all the important aspects of Hals’s oeuvre, including his militia paintings, his spectacular family portraits and his depictions of laughter: he was one of very few artists throughout the history of Western painting who successfully managed to paint people smiling and laughing. The texts also provide an overview of the artist’s life, and examine his extraordinarily virtuoso technique, which involved painting extremely fast straight on to the canvas.

For the first time, an overview is given of all the apprentices who worked for Hals. All-American Ads of the 60s
With the consumerist euphoria of the fifties still going strong and the race to the moon at its height, the mood of advertising in the sixties was cheerful, optimistic, and at times, revolutionary. The decade's ads touted perceived progress-such as tang and instant omelets - "just add water"-while striving to reinforce good old American values.
Stars like Sean Connery, Woody Allen, Salvador Dali, and Sammy Davis Jr. endorsed everything from bourbon to handmade suits in an attempt by Madison Avenue to urge Americans to open their wallets and participate in one giant consumer binge. Social change at the end of the era brought psychedelic swirls and liberated women and minorities to a newly conscious public. Keep an eye out for some of the more surprising and controversial ads-such as Tupperware billing its storage container as a "wifesaver."

Irezumi, or simply tattooing, has a long history in Japanese culture. Arranged by continents, this book features a varied
and diverse selection of 50 top tattoo artists from around the world, from ones whose creations are closely aligned with the traditions and values of classical Japanese tattoos, to those who take a more contemporary approach, using the Japanese style as a stepping stone for expressing their own unique vision and voice. The text is based on interviews with the artists in which they discuss their artistic backgrounds, how they got started in the world of tattooing, how they became interested in the Japanese style, and how they define their work.

Kawase Hasui: Modern Visions of Japan

Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) was one of the most important and prolific Japanese printmakers of the 20th century. He was one of the main creators of the shin hanga ('new prints') movement, whose artists depicted traditional subjects in a style influenced by Western painting. Shin hanga prints are harmoniously balanced designs, printed on the highest quality paper using the finest pigments, and in small editions. They are the fruit of a traditional yet successful collaboration between artist, publisher, block cutter and printer and have become increasingly popular among collectors of Japanese prints in the last decade.
Hasui began his artistic career studying Japanese painting. However, soon after seeing Shinsui's Eight Views of Lake Biwa series, Hasui turned to woodblock printing in 1919. Shozaburo Watanabe was the first to recognize his artistic genius, and Hasui Kawase soon became the most popular artist working for this prestigious publisher. He produced nearly a thousand woodcuts in a career that spanned almost forty years. Towards the end of his life, the Japanese government recognized him as a 'Living National Treasure' for his contribution to Japanese culture.

Following open heart surgery, Peter Carpenter was given one instruction - walk if you want to stay alive. So, when his hero died in 2016, he knew what he had to do. The figure who was to so many a companion and guide had left no single focal point for homage. To reconnect with him, Carpenter would take a walk into the past, to the places where David Jones became something more: David Bowie.
Leaving behind well-known shrines to Bowie, he journeyed through South London edgelands to obscurer haunts. Carpenter's quest, a series of happy accidents and chance meetings, took him to Bickley as well as Berlin and Brixton, to Eel Pie Island as well as Heddon Street and Beckenham.
Carpenter's perambulations echo Bowie's own wandering creative spirit. They reveal multiple influences, both conscious and unconscious, in Bowie's creative development. Ultimately, Carpenter reaches a fresh understanding of where Bowie sits in the culture, not as an outlier, but as part of a tradition, informed by those artists, poets and musicians who passed on their wisdom to him. První monografie Freda Kramera (1913–1994), nejvýznamnějšího českého reklamního fotografa padesátých až osmdesátých let, čerpá z rozsáhlého souboru autorových prací, které po jeho smrti věnovala do sbírek Uměleckoprůmyslového musea v Praze jeho manželka. Kramer vystudoval ve třicátých letech pražskou Státní grafickou školu pod vedením profesora Karla Nováka, u něhož o desetiletí dříve studoval také Josef Sudek. V té době se Kramer věnoval i sociální fotografii. Po druhé světové válce, během níž byl internován v koncentračních táborech, se k fotografii zase vrátil. Vynikal zejména v ateliérové práci, kde spojil výtvarný odkaz avantgardy s poučeným vnímáním tehdejších obchodních strategií. V padesátých letech i později spolupracoval s podniky zahraničního obchodu (Jablonex, Skloexport, Centrotex, Kovo ad.) i s domácím Domem módy. Od roku 1967 do počátku devadesátých let byl externím pedagogem na pražské FAMU, kde vychoval řadu budoucích profesionálů. Těžiště výběru výstavy je v jeho pracích z šedesátých let, kdy jako jeden z mála využíval také barevnou fotografii a spolupracoval s předními grafiky. Do obecného povědomí se nejvíce zapsala jeho tzv. Košířská madona, starší reklamní fotografie, kterou si v osmdesátých letech vybrali jako svoji značku mladí vydavatelé samizdatové kulturní Revolver Revue. Publikace, navazující na stejnojmennou autorovu výstavní premiéru, má ctižádost toto povědomí podstatně rozšířit.
