Každé z osmdesáti jazykovo-obrazových zastavení, z nichž publikace sestává, přitom poukazuje na problematičnost a nejednoznačnost jazyka i fotografie jako prostředků komunikace a popisu reality. Ne každou větu lze číst jen jedním způsobem, ne každá ústní promluva odpovídá jednoznačnému písemnému vyjádření. Fotografie mohou text ilustrovat, ale i zamlžovat, vysvětlovat, ale i transformovat. Tvorba Jaroslava Beneše náleží k té linii české umělecké fotografie, v níž se završuje analogová éra, zakladatelská fáze technicky vzniklých obrazů, a reprezentuje tak pozdní, závěrečnou fázi modernity. Pro Beneše, který začal tvořil v sedmdesátých letech 20. století, je fotografie bytostnou životní potřebou, nezbytným prostředkem pro sebevyjádření.
Z hlediska námětu fotografuje Jaroslav Beneš všední detaily současné architektury, jeho tvorba ale především vyjadřuje pocit z doby, v níž žije. Nevyčerpává se však pouze estetickými vjemy, zajímá ho vždy, co je za nimi, tajemství, ono „cosi navíc“. U Beneše se nabízí termín minimalismus, ale na naplnění striktních minimalistických atributů se v jeho díle nachází „příliš mnoho“ osobního. Jeho fotografie jsou až iritující sloučeniny objektivity se subjektivitou a niterností. Typické pro jeho přístup rovněž je, že mu na fotografiích do určité míry nevadí technické vady, které během procesu vzniknou: nastal-li na vrstvě filmu či papíru kaz, netrápí se jím, nezastírá ho. Takovou chybu přijímá coby organickou součást „setkání“, jímž pro něho fotografie a celý proces jejího vzniku je.

The water meanders across the surface of the paper and, given the proper nuance by the artist’s brush, it will reluctantly settle. Robinson’s approach to the medium of watercolor is primarily traditional but his methods are unconventional. Robinson simplifies the process and teaches artists to layer colors from light to dark and to focus on the highlighted areas first.
He teaches that the values should be established in the beginning stages of the painting, using a monochromatic block-in that allows you to glaze pure layers of color over a muted gray underpainting. The results produce more sophisticated, subtle paintings. Further, his “live in the moment” approach embraces watercolor’s unpredictability as part of the process, the end result being a painting with intensity, spontaneity, and beauty.

Africké květiny přinášejí širší zamyšlení nad jazzovou hudbou jako fenoménem, na němž stojí existence veškeré populární hudby. Autor připomíná také okolnosti vzniku a vývoje jazzu, rock’n’rollu a zabývá se hudební globalizací.
Kniha ukazuje, co všechno se v souvislosti hlavně s jazzem, ale nakonec hudbou obecně, může honit v hlavě člověku, který s ní žije desítky let, je jejím náruživým posluchačem, propagátorem, hodně toho o ní ví a „něco“ si o ní také myslí. Vladimír Kouřil patří k nejserióznějším hudebním publicistům a kritikům, kteří se jazzem dlouhá léta zabývají. Nejde tedy o „z vody vyvařenou“ dojmologii, nýbrž o soudy stojící na pevných nohou zvládnuté faktografie, mimořádné posluchačské zkušenosti a v neposlední řadě i značných mezioborových znalostí. Nejednou zde zabrousíme do literatury či výtvarného umění.
Titul knihy Africké květiny odkazuje na fakt, že cesta vývoje nejen jazzu, ale celé civilizace vyšla z lůna afrického kontinentu. Přímým podnětem pak byla jedna z nejkrásnějších skladeb Dukea Ellingtona Flaurette Africaine napsaná pod dojmem jeho pracovního pobytu v Paříži.
