Letizia Battaglia: Life, Love and Death in Sicily
Letizia Battaglia is the catalogue published on the occasion of the monographic exhibition open to the public from Oct. 8, 2024 to Feb. 23, 2025 at the Photographer's Gallery in London, curated by Paolo Falcone, in collaboration with the Letizia Battaglia Archive, Falcone Foundation for the Arts, and with the contribution of Candido Speroni and Carla Fendi Speroni Foundation and the Italian Cultural Institute of London.

For nearly fifty years Letizia Battaglia has photographed, observed and lived intensely her time and especially her city, Palermo. Letizia Battaglia is a tribute to her work, her intense and new gaze, her yearning for freedom and her always being a woman against the tide. It is an uninterrupted album that goes from Milan to the face of Pier Paolo Pasolini, from the many mafia deaths to the unconscious elegance of the little girls of the Cala district in Palermo; and then the religious processions, the faces of Piersanti Mattarella, Giovanni Falcone up to the ferocious boss Leoluca Bagarella. For almost fifty years, Letizia Battaglia has photographed, observed and experienced her time and above all her city, Palermo.

Walter Benjamin: A Little History of Photography
An extraordinary document in the history of photographic criticism.
Perhaps more than any other text, A Little History of Photography by the German-Jewish thinker Walter Benjamin has shaped the way in which we understand early photography and the photographic act. One of the first theoretical studies of visual culture, this essay laid the foundation for modern cultural criticism. Instead of regarding the artwork as a unique object, Benjamin emphasized the political and artistic potential of a new technology based on endless reproduction. A Little History of Photography was originally published in the German literary journal Die Literarische Welt in 1931 as three short essays reviewing several books dedicated to early photography. In this text, Benjamin introduced concepts that remain central to critical theory of the medium: the aura, optical unconscious, reproducibility, among other topics. It constitutes a remarkably prescient description of the limits and potentials of photography which remains thought-provoking today.

Autor představuje konstrukci z trochu jiného úhlu pohledu, a to jako předmět kreativní úpravy prostřednictvím jednotlivých konstrukčních elementů. Elementy knižní vazby navazují na předchozí titul Stavíme knižní vazbu, v němž byly jednotlivé konstrukční prvky definovány. Nyní jsou ukázány v oborovém, výtvarném i technologickém kontextu. Autor čerpá inspiraci v pedagogických metodách Bauhausu, které jsou založeny na výstavbě výtvarného díla z elementárních výtvarných prvků. Konstrukční prvky knižní vazby jsou použity jako díly stavebnice. Výtvarné hodnoty předmětu je dosaženo vzájemnou kombinací prvků do funkčních a estetických celků. On a very fortuitous day in 1970, 26-year-old Sebastiao Salgado held a camera for the first time. When he looked through the viewfinder, he experienced a revelation: suddenly life made sense. From that day onward—though it took years of hard work before he had the experience to earn his living as a photographer—the camera became his tool for interacting with the world. Salgado, who “always preferred the chiaroscuro palette of black-and-white images,” shot very little color in his early career before giving it up completely.
Raised on a farm in Brazil, Salgado possessed a deep love and respect for nature; he was also particularly sensitive to the ways in which human beings are affected by their often devastating socio-economic conditions. Of the myriad works Salgado has produced in his acclaimed career, three long-term projects stand out: Workers (1993), documenting the vanishing way of life of manual laborers across the world; Migrations (2000), a tribute to mass migration driven by hunger, natural disasters, environmental degradation and demographic pressure; and this new opus, GENESIS, the result of an epic eight-year expedition to rediscover the mountains, deserts and oceans, the animals and peoples that have so far escaped the imprint of modern society—the land and life of a still-pristine planet. “Some 46% of the planet is still as it was in the time of genesis,” Salgado reminds us. “We must preserve what exists.” The GENESIS project, along with the Salgados’ Instituto Terra, are dedicated to showing the beauty of our planet, reversing the damage done to it, and preserving it for the future.
Over 30 trips—traveled by foot, light aircraft, seagoing vessels, canoes, and even balloons, through extreme heat and cold and in sometimes dangerous conditions—Salgado created a collection of images showing us nature, animals, and indigenous peoples in breathtaking beauty. What does one discover in GENESIS? At the dawn of the automobile age, Americans’ predilection for wanderlust prompted a new wave of inventive entrepreneurs to cater to this new mode of transportation. Starting in the 1920s, attention-grabbing buildings began to appear that would draw in passing drivers for snacks, provisions, souvenirs, or a quick meal. The architectural establishment of the day dismissed these roadside buildings as “monstrosities”.
Yet, they flourished, especially along America’s Sunbelt, and in particular, in Southern California, as proprietors indulged their creative impulses in the form of giant, eccentric constructions — from owls, dolls, pigs, and ships, to coffee pots and fruit. Their symbolic intent was guileless, yet they were marginalized by history. But, over the past 40 years, California’s architectural anomalies have regained their integrity, and are now being celebrated in this freshly revised compendium of buildings, California Crazy.
Brimming with the best examples of this architectural genre, California Crazy includes essays exploring the influences that fostered the nascent architectural movement, as well as identifying the unconventional landscapes and attitudes found on Los Angeles and Hollywood roadsides which allowed these buildings to flourish in profusion.
