The best of Czech Press Photo 20 Years
The Best of Czech Press Photo – obrazy dvou desetiletí je název zcela výjimečné publikace, která vyšla k otevření výstavy jubilejního 20.ročníku Czech Press Photo 2014. Na 496 stranách předkládá citově působivou obrazovou historii posledních dvaceti let, ale i pohled na podobu fotografie uplynulé doby. Jako v napínavém filmu zde defilují všechny „Fotografie roku“, a tak divák-čtenář znovu prožívá hlavní události a jevy jednotlivých let - válečné konflikty a přírodní katastrofy v dopadu na konkrétní osudy lidí, boj o dítě v dnešních rodinách, snahu jednotlivce postavit se rozpínavosti průmyslových koncernů, korupční aféry, které se šíří společností jako epidemie, ale i úsilí člověka zvítězit sám nad sebou. Je tu i přehled často překvapivých fotografií, kterým daly svou cenu děti, a také ty, jež v anketách oslovily na rozdíl od mezinárodních odborných porotců největší počet návštěvníků a získaly tak „Ceny diváků“. To, co je však vůbec nejpůsobivější, jsou přehledně uspořádané kapitoly věnované jednotlivým soutěžním kategoriím. V nich je možné na výběru těch nejlepších snímků z nejlepších postupně, rok za rokem sledovat, jak jsme v posledních dvou desetiletích žili, jak jsme se menili, čím vším jsme procházeli a co se dělo ve světě i bezprostředně kolem nás – v každodenním životě, ve sportu, ve společnosti, v politice, v přírodě i v nás samých … Úvodní text Daniely Mrázkové se zabývá nejen pohledem na současnost obrazového novinářství, ale je i vhledem do jeho budoucnosti. Album snadných valčíků
Album snadných valčíků předkládá výběr z evropské klavírní literatury doplněný několika úpravami orchestrálních děl. První dva oddíly alba (Valčíky světových skladatelů a Valčíky českých skladatelů) zahrnují zjednodušené verze původních skladeb pro klavír. Třetí oddíl (Valčíky z oper a symfonií) rozšiřuje klavírní repertoár o úpravy operních a symfonických děl. Valčíky jsou v jednotlivých blocích řazeny jednak chronologicky, jednak dle své obtížnosti. Úpravy, které provedl Antonín Pokorný, spočívají především ve zjednodušení sazby, popř. v transpozici do tónin s méně komplikovaným předznamenáním, výjimečně ve zkrácení původního rozsahu. Soubor je určen především žákům základních uměleckých škol.
Hieronymus Bosch
Delicious demons. Deciphering allegories in the complex, fantastical works of Hieronymous Bosch. In the midst of the realist-leaning artistic climate of the Late Gothic and Early Renaissance, Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch (c. 1450-1516) was more than an anomaly. Bosch's paintings are populated with grotesque scenes of fantastical creatues succumbing to all manner of human desire, fantasy, and angst. One of his greatest inventions was to take the figural and scenic representations known as drolleries, which use the monstrous and the grotesque to illustrate sin and evil, and to transfer them from the marginalia of illuminated manuscripts into large-format panel paintings. Alongside traditional hybrids of man and beast, such as centaurs, and mythological creatures such as unicorns, devils, dragons, and griffins, we also encounter countless mixed creatures freely invented by the artist. Many subsidiary scenes illustrate proverbs and figures of speech in common use in Bosch's day. In his Temptation of St Anthony triptych, for example, the artist shows a messenger devil wearing ice skates, evoking the popular expression that the world was `skating on ice`-meaning it had gone astray. In his pictorial translation of proverbs, in particular, Bosch was very much an innovator. Bosch - whose real name was Jheronimus van Aken - was widely copied and imitated: the number of surviving works by Bosch's followers exceeds the master's own production by more than tenfold. Today only 20 paintings and eight drawings are confidently assigned to Bosch's oeuvre. He continues to be seen as a visionary, a portrayer of dreams and nightmares, and the painter par excellence of hell and its demons. In this exhaustive book, published in view of the upcoming 500th anniversary of Bosch's death and covering his complete works in huge, splendid reproductions with copious details, art historian and acknowledged Bosch expert Stefan Fischer examines just what it was about Bosch and his painting that proved so immensely influential.

Ester M. Šimerová, významná slovenská maliarka, žila a študovala v Paríži aj v Prahe, aby sa po rokoch opäť vrátila do Bratislavy. Neskôr odišla na Liptov, kde vytvorila svoje posledné práce. Autorka textu Ľudmila Peterajová vo výpravnej monografii o známej umelkyni prezentuje známe, ale aj menej známe, ešte nepublikované diela (spolu takmer 300 reprodukcií) a odkrýva okolnosti aj udalosti, ktoré ovplyvňovali tvorbu Ester Šimerovej. Dôležitú časť monografie tvorí doteraz nezverejnená korešpondencia umelkyne.

Andres Petersen Cafe Lehmitz
Cafe Lehmitz, a beer joint at the Reeperbahn, was a meeting point for many who worked in Hamburg's red-light district: prostitutes, pimps, transvestites, workers, and petty criminals. Anders Petersen was 18 years old when he first visited Hamburg in 1962, chanced upon Cafe Lehmitz, and established friends that made an impact on his life. In 1968 he returned to Lehmitz, found new "regulars," renewed contact, and began to take pictures. His photographs, which we first published in book form in 1978, have become classics of their genre--Tom Waits used our cover picture for his LP Raindogs. Their candidness and authenticity continue to move the viewer. The solidarity evident in them prevents voyeurism or false pity arising vis-a-vis a milieu generally referred to as "asocial." The "other" world of Cafe Lehmitz, which no longer exists in this form, becomes visible as a lively community with its own self-image and dignity.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the department store developed from markets and urban arcades, from which the shopping mall evolved in the post-war period. The operators of department stores and shopping centers are coming under increasing pressure from the competition of the continuously growing internet trade. By the same token, however, there is also an increasing tendency for the internet trade to become involved with real shops. The challenge is to optimize the quality of the customers stay. This is accomplished by the interspersing of the offer by cultural institutions, a variety of dining opportunities and exciting leisure activities. The time spent in a department store or a shopping center must be conceived as an experience, separate from the consumption of goods, which engages all the senses. Which is where architectural quality as well as a targeted design can play an increasingly important role.
Protektorátní Praha jako německé město
Záhy po zřízení Protektorátu Čechy a Morava se české obyvatelstvo stalo cílem rozsáhlé vlny germanizace. Mezi prostředky využívanými ke zdůraznění nacistické dominance nemohla chybět ani nacionálním socialismem preferovaná architektura.
Ke germanizačním zákrokům využívali nacisté v protektorátu stávajících státních institucí.
V případě architektury a urbanismu se jednalo o organizaci původně založenou s cílem Prahu modernizovat – Plánovací komisi pro hlavní město Prahu a okolí. V jejím čele se postupně vystřídalo několik německých architektů a urbanistů, kteří se Praze snažili vtělit ráz ne nepodobný přestavbám Berlína, Norimberku či Lince.
Publikace českého historika Miloše Hořejše představuje první systematické zmapování této pozapomenuté kapitoly našich novodobých dějin.
